I served 40 yrs back but if I was young now, I would not rally to the colours. It is not my country anymore. Many ex-servicemen feel thus.

I joined 36 years ago at the age of 16 and served in Iraq. I was proud, as my family had all served in the Army, Navy, or RAF. After the embarrassment of the second Gulf War (WMD), the country felt cheated by the politicians and blamed the armed forces. This led to a shift in politics where these so-called politicians were willing to sacrifice our country’s security to keep the public happy and maintain their jobs by cutting the Armed Forces in half. As a result, many of the best people in the armed forces left. Until a country like the UK treats its Armed Forces, along with all Emergency Services and the Police, with the respect and funding they need, we will never have true security. The UK needs to wake up. Money must be spent to make the UK great and strong. Dark days are ahead.

Depending where you live in UK or europe it may be prudent to invest in NBC gear. You can purchase 3M P99 full face mask and overalls used by painters in auto shops. It’s inexpensive and just peace of mind for something you hopefully never need to use

The UK has been investing a lot (some say too much compared to conventional weapons) in exactly these areas, so I am sure we are not as vulnerable in this regard as Ukraine. We definately need more tanks, artillery and ships though, they are still relevent despite other aspects being important.
Well given the last drone attack on British forces resulted in the Brits landing one of the drones for analysis and shutting the others down so they crashed...i`m going to say the Brits probably have better EW for that particular attack than the Russians.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has shown us that modern technology is usefull but nothing beats boots on the ground , and our military forces are too small . We need a stronger Navy and Air Force and many more soldiers than we currently employ

When i joined the army in 1980 the British army was 320,000 strong, today is 72,000, we have an army in name only today, we wouldn't even be capable of retaking the Falklands if they were to be invaded again. Its embarrassing and a travesty what's been allowed to happen, at a time when the world's never been closer to WW3 the government think conscription will solve the problem, it won't, you'd be sending soldiers under trained, with no experience to fight a huge Russian army, whose allies are China, Iran etc.

No one is ever prepared for a world war, but we are in a pre-war cycle and something needs to change. If volunteers are not available then conscription might be the only real answer to the lack of numbers. Stop whining and start priming for war. Even if this requires mobilising civilians to have TA type training. You do not even need to mobilise, all you need to do is provide the mandatory training as part of start to work training regime. You make it law that every new employee does 2 weeks military training before they can start work in the UK. This involves basic marching and shooting training packages. Ignore fitness unless the individuals volunteers for a 2 week fitness training package. Train the trainers now and then set up the packages and get civilians to self motivate due to economical incentives. Give it to the Vets to train the youth and watch this become fashionable and take off. Another 2 week drone course should also be provided. These programmes will be great recruiting platforms. Every UK citizen will want to do their duty and will want the training if the Chinese start moving across the globe. 60M army of trained civilians will be very hard to beat.

@@michaelotieno6524 NATO is a voluntary membership organisation and has always been. If Russia was a little less aggressive then maybe countries would not feel the need to join. You can not blame NATO for your aggression, you need to look at your leader and tell him to stop broadcasting that he is going to Nuke everyone on a daily bases and stop trying to steal what isn't his anymore from your neighbours.
