Yes yes yes these conversations need to happen! As a white Latina with one side of my family lighter and the other darker I’ve heard the colorists comments. My mom always told me to be grateful for being white passing, but I can tell that comes from her own insecurities about her skin color. Whenever she tells me this I tell her my skin gives me privilege but it doesn’t benefit me in a practical sense. I remind her that her skin and eyes have melanin that protects her from the sun! I tell her to see the blessings god gave her because I know when I get older my skin won’t look half as good as hers. The anti blackness also needs to end. I hear it the most from my older relatives sadly it is much harder to change their minds. I remind them that you can’t judge someone without ever speaking to them. I tell them you wouldn’t want someone to stereotype you based on how you look so why would you do that to someone else knowing it is unfair. The conversations need to begin in our families from the youngest kid to the oldest grandparent.

So so powerful what you just said! But it’s very true! It’s difficult to get through to elders because the world they grew up in they were taught these ideologies as if it’s something natural. It’s hard to unlearn but it’s necessary to have those conversations. Thank you for sharing your experience💖

Ariel L...If your mom is melaninated how does that make you white? There are plenty of black people specifically back in the day that were white passing and some of them used it to their benefit, but they were still black, and this sounds much like your case.

Wtf Latinos are proud of being brown bro. No one is anti black. Anti criminal is what we are. 19 black children dead from black on black crime yet no blm but when a criminal gets shot oh blm ready to exploit for money. Ariel sorry man but i think your story is full of it. When do Latinos accept no for an answer. I'm 2nd generation and we worked our butts of f and no one said no because we're brown. We're men for hard work. That's why we prosper. Stop being a victim and start being a victor. Brown poeple are full of strength and prideful... you want to get by with victimhood. My great-grandfather was a wealthy Spaniard from the mountains of Asturias, a sanctuary founded for Christian nobles and the only region in Spain never conquered by the moors, and he is not blonde hair and blue eyed. He was an international news correspondent and hotel owner who had hotels paid for in diamonds and sapphires all over the world including Mexico. In fact, that is him in my avatar. Most wealthy Spaniards are not blonde with blue eyes. He is celtic and celts are known for brown or dark hair.

So true I'm half black and native I'm bless to come from a family that has many different skin tones in it. We where also raise to stick together as a family and as a race. As a kid I was always told that know matter what you have or where you go in life if your own people turn on you then you have nothing that's not to say you should not be there for others you should always do what's right. The said thing is that the Latin and black community are the largest group in the U.S and if we where to pull together in the U.S we would be the power house in this country. But because we both have a group of fools who either think there white or just not been proud of who they are there hurting both of are communities. Mr. X said it best the biggest threat to are community is our self take a look white people don't have to do any thing we're doing it our self.

I see your POV, about the early days of the Spanish Empire. But not all Latinos can trace their ancestors to the early Spanish colonial days. Many of today’s Latin Americans have immigrant European, middle eastern and Asian ancestors who only arrived in South America in the late 1800s to early 1900s.

In South America, the Divisions between countries by Human Phenotypes is very common, they do not have a Community as such because you can Find Mixed Black Whites except in countries where they are very homogeneous like Peru but what happens is that they are very different things and It is not that people become indifferent but that not everyone thinks about Equality rights.

Yes, it is outrageous that darker skinned people can’t get as many privileges like lighter skinned people. Hopefully one day the Mexican government passes into law heavily penalizing telenovelas and other film industries only giving leading roles to lighter skinned people. Promote more diversity of color and penalize companies businesses that discriminate on skin color, gender and age.

Si no te aplica, no te ofendas.
Pero como dicen, you do you. Buena tarde.

A very leftist perspective. I think you need to understand and review history from a different framework, because you're looking at it through the lens of social justice, which naively assumes that human morality is understood the same throughout time. Back in 1492, everyone was conquering everyone. In fact, Spain and Portugal were literally ruled by constant invaders and foreigner conquerors for longer than they ruled the Americas. From the Italian Peninsula came the Romans, who brought their language (Latin), which became eventually the languages that most Iberians speak today (Castilian, Portuguese, Catalan, etc). The Moors ruled for 600 years, affecting the culture of the region more than anyone can really grasp.
Our roots are no less European than they are Indigenous (not a single ethnicity) or African (also not an ethnicity). We exist BECAUSE the Spanish and Portuguese empires came into existence. Without that aspect of history, with all its negatives and positives, we would not be here. Our food, music, clothing, religious practices, architecture, dance, etc. derives from the fusion of practices, not some kind of bizarre, structured system of legal segregation or oppression, that DID OCCUR....in the United States. If the Iberians hadn't conquered our region of the world, our Indigenous ancestors would have never come into contact with them, and African peoples would have never been imported as slaves. We simply wouldn't exist. It's not about right or wrong. It's about the facts.

your experiences are so Mexican but is not the same in all countries, for example, you was talking about Mexican novelas when have a huge casting of withe people, but watch Colombian nivela and the picture is diferent. About the colonialism, was different the Anglo conquer, where the most important thing was race, that's why they killed almost all the indigenous people in the north, the Spanish conquest was different, the main thing was religion and language, the derived slaves could be freed if they learned the language and took the religion, that is why there were also black conquerors in Latin America, some names, Juan Garrido, Juan Beltrán, Juan García, Sebastián Toral, Juan Valiente, etc… others the first black teacher was in the Spanish colony, Juan Latino, admired by the writer of Don Quixote de La Mancha and whom he names in his masterpiece, In addition, the Spanish colony was the cradle of the first place where blacks were free in the American territory, El Fuerte Mose, a place where the slaves of the English escaped for freedom. For this and many other things that would be extended to me, the American revolutions do not apply to Latin culture, and if there are prejudices in Latin America, it has been due to the Anglo influence after the second war, the history vea is so complex to make a reduction from the Anglo glasses
