Ben Cross .... rest in peace sir... will forever remember you in this roll playing Harold Abrahams. Thank you !

Yes indeed! And we also remember Ian Charleson, who died 30 years (hard to believe) before Ben, immortal in the role of Eric Liddell.

James, Ben Cross was Dr Andrew Manson in The Citadel, a medical drama set in 1920s Wales. It was shown in the early 80s - I was at senior school back then and remember watching it!

The best British film and one of the world’s best films of all time. Excellent on every level and many of Sam Mussambini’s coaching techniques are still used today!

The slow motion filming captures perfectly the runners' state of mind. The waiting for that shot feels like an eternity with time slowing down. Then you blast off as soon as that shot rings out and before you know it, you've crossed the finish line. Then the time slows down again when the mind just begins to process what just had happened.

Totally agree! The way this scene is done, the editing, the music, the shots, is just perfect!

An incredible scene from start to finish ... capped off by Ian Holm’s emotional reaction as Mussabini, punching a hole through the hat. Perfection!

What an awesome movie and this scene is outstanding
As a runner and swimmer for most of my life although not at this level that moment between set and the gun is a lifetime
Many times i cant remember going down on the blocks and thinking what the hell is he waiting for
You feel like a coiled spring waiting
False starts are still common and usually occur when you have a long wait ,while the athletes settle

I was about 8 when they filmed it, my Dad took us kids down to be extras in the stadium. My school (St. John’s) got all the plastic hats to use in our dressing-up box. I think another scene was shot on the walkway down to the landing stage at Woodside Ferry Terminal, Birkenhead.

I don’t think (Escape to) Victory was filmed at The Oval, Bebington - several film websites confirm that it was filmed in Hungary (where the original version of the film was also made). I had no idea Hollywood veteran John Huston has directed it though.

Just read about the real story, but Abrahams was in trouble in the quarter finals, failing to go at the sound of the gun, had to come from behind to win. That was his hardest race. This one, he was reportedly too fast for the others, and set a new record.
