He is socially inept and have little sense of selve preservation, but when motivated enough, he is suprisingly creative. I think that without Fry's more potent side, Futurama would get old very quickly. One-sided total idiot works only for slapstick comedy, not long story character arcs. There is a reason why The Simpsons were ruined when most of Homer and Bart's redempting qualities were pretty much removed completly.
Fry can be surprisingly perceptive and quick witted when he wants to. In a Bicyclops built for two he cracked Althazar’s plan and got all of his fiancé’s in the same place at once. In Leela’s Homeworld he figured out who her parents were and stopped her from making a terrible mistake. He kept her from suffocating long enough to fix the ship in Love and Rocket while she was too distracted to focus on his warnings. In Fear of a Bot Planet he tricked the robots by using the superstitions they made up against them. And in Bender Gets Made he successfully pilots a ship with a jury rigged setup while fighting them off at the guns at the same time to try and save both of them from Leela’s pride. Heck, in Time Keeps on Slipping he moves the friggin _stars_ just to make her fall for him. Now no one’s going to claim he’s smart. Or graceful. But it’s clear there’s something more to how his mind works than mere stupidity. All of that aside, what he lacks in intelligence, sometimes he makes up for in overwhelming ways with sheer heart.
