Hey Sports Historians! What did you guys think about the lasting legacy of Tecmo Super Bowl? Do you believe that it’s one of the greatest sports games ever? Where would you rank it? Let me know in the comments below!
Great video, homes. You got it wrong about the "password save system". Yes, the first NES Tecmo Bowl used passwords for season mode. Tecmo Super Bowl, however used a battery in the game carridge for season mode saves...allowing for player stats and injury tracking. Truly was the most important sports video game ever made, and one of the greatest video games of all-time
To this day I don't think any other football game captured the feel and difference between a starter and a bench player. The player ratings were everything in this game. When your starting QB, RB, or WR got hurt. It surely affected your teams chances. Thats what made it feel so real and fun. It's a shame PlayStation never kept up this football gem!!
My older brother bought this game for me on Christmas 1991, and it was the best Christmas gift I can remember, nothing has eclipsed that magic popping that game in my NES on Christmas Eve.
My greatest Tecmo memory/achievement is scoring 69 points with the Saints with 0 offensive yards thanks to the incredible power of Gill Fenerty and Morten Anderson.
Fun fact. Kick returners got their speed somehow from the right or left guard on the offensive line. Put Ironhead heyward back there and he would popcorn players left and right. But yeah, Gil Fenerty was my favorite too.
I remember when I was completing my run of winning the super bowl with all 28 teams I had to go up against the 49ers with the Colts. My center and a guard where both 'bad' condition while the 49ers NT and DE (why am I blanking on the names, darn it!) where both 'excellent.' Not to mention Jerry Rice being excellent. Had to go for all shotgun plays, the one play from center was a nearly instant sack/tackle even without a guessed play. It was dishonorable but after losing to them in the Super Bowl on my last playthrough I went with the 'pick your nose' defense - the old dive with the NT and usually get the QB before anything can happen. Still barely won. Of course, after completing all 28 I did a Chiefs run to vent and got some other team than the 49ers in the Super Bowl.
I enjoyed playing with so many teams, but my favorite was either the Bills or Giants. LT was by far my fav player but the Bills had the offense and Bruce Smith/Cornelius Bennett, albeit they were no comparison to LT 😂
When i was 12yrs old. My best friend would spend the weekends, our sole mission was to play an entire season before morning. He took Detroit, I took Philly. Each of us armed with a 2 liter of Mountain Dew and staying up all night. At the end we would face each other in the NFC championship, winner to go on to play in the superbowl. I recently purchased one of those newly moded games, love it. The best part of the game is "popcorning" defenders, "pancaking" QBs, 100 yard hail mary TDs, getting you favorite player in excellent condition, etc etc etc.....
Damn me and my close buddies the 4 of us(9th and 10th graders) picked 1 team from each conference and played an entire szn over Xmas/winter break!! Great Times good ol care free days😌🥹
Tecmo Superbowl was such a great title that has left a great legacy on gaming. I was able to get Tecmo Bowl Throwback for my Xbox One so I still get to relive some of those Tecmo Bowl memories
Great video. Tecmo is alive and well! Lots of programmers make yearly updates to the game. NFL and college. There's even a guy in Texas that does a HS version.
My three roommates and I played entire seasons against each other in college back when Tecmo Super Bowl first came out. One roommate always took the stacked 49ers. The greatest memory was his losing the Super Bowl to a guy using the Bengals. A last second Hail Mary with a super jump reception screen was the game winner. We talk about that Super Bowl to this day.
@@kiljaedyn - Baseball Stars was the greatest. Needed to win to earn money to upgrade your players. I remember getting players with the potential to have max stats. Great game.
I did the same with my best friends in college. My best friend was a Vikings fan, and he beat me with--no joke--a 73 yard field goal one game. Didn't even think the game could crank out a 73 yard field goal as a possibility!
I still remember going to Montgomery Wards with my parents, after they picked me up from basketball practice. I was 13 yrs old and saved up all my money ($75) to buy it. Most expensive NES game i ever bought. Totally worth it.
It did not utilize a password system. It had a battery save system, one of the few NES games to do so. But, if you didn't reset the game before turning it off, your save could be deleted.
To me, Tecmo Super Bowl was such a great game because it took an already great game and made it way better... Better graphics, the 17 week season, the keeping of stats, the ability to choose your own plays, the fumbles, and injured players, and the players strength levels. It was just the perfect game.
Tecmo Super Bowl the NES version is the best football game of all time imo, such a groundbreaking game, it was the first football game to do a lot things..
I was 14 when this game was released. I couldn’t wait to buy it after playing Tecmo Bowl for years. Loved Tecmo Bowl & Tecmo Super Bowl was just next level. I loved playing with the 49ers. The first time I threw a pass & it went to the animation screen & they jumped up to catch the ball just blew my mind. Even when the guy would just jump up & catch the ball during game play was amazing. So many good players on those teams. Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders, Okoye, The Posse/Redskins.
You had me at Tecmo Bowl!! Loved this video!! I had a neighbor with the Tecmo Bowl and Walter Payton! We got the NES for Christmas and Super Tecmo Bowl!!!!! It is the greatest game ever! I feel like as a 9 year old kid from Indiana, that game is a huge reason why I am 49er fan still to this day!!! Jerry Rice!! I still have the 1993 Version for my Sega that is hooked up in my card room that I still play occasionally! I STILL have the stats from each season in a yellow paper notepad that my buddy and I would copy down after destroying the league and winning another Lombardi 🏆!!! I loved this video!!!
I remember freaking out when I found out about this game on nes how well it performed detailed season mode and stats. Head of its time! I would to see this game moded with a franchise mode!
Tecmo Super Bowl is by far the most popular video game I ever played in the early 90s I remember my Late father got for me as a Christmas present love ❤️ and miss u pops
Tecmo bowl, man. I remember the 99 cent video had like one copy and we be in that store every Friday after school trying to get it for the weekend! 😂 My neighbor would come over and we'd play tecmo bowl and double dribble all weekend 😂. I must of been 9 back then but I remember it like it was yesterday. Good times indeed. 😂
What makes it special is that you can yell "hut" for 9 hours if you don't hike the ball. Classic, total classic. This one time, i went to an outdoor concert at Konocti Harbor with Dio, Deep Purple and Za Scorpions. The end.
Best football game ever imo. What made it unique and fun was that the player you controlled had a primary effect on each play. The new games are far more realistic, but just not as "fun" from a user experience standpoint. With current games, you are relying largely on the npc's primarily for 80+% of the defensive play and probably 30% of the offensive play. What made TSB so fun was a few elite players controlled on offense and/or defense had far more control over game play - making the game far more hands on during game play. Plus, the ability to shuck players on offense and defense especially mano y mano with your buddy - by who had the quickest thumb. You could also try to counter opponents with play selection by focusing run plays at the opponents "game wrecker" players - running at LT, or towards a really good CB and sort of force your opponents hand as far as if he wanted to select the best defender or not. Just a really fun game.
Eric Dickerson played for the Falcons on the SNES version of Tecmo Bowl. He made the game roster, but was cut from the Falcons before the ‘93 season started. The games prefaced that “all rosters are accurate as of August 16, 1993”.
No one will ever understand the hype and delivered hype of this video game unless you were a kid back then. I was 11 years old at the time, and I was an absolute football nut. I got Super Tecmo Bowl for Christmas that year, and up to that point of my existence, it was the greatest moment in my life. The simple fact that the game saved in-season states was revolutionary. And that was just one of the features that made the game so epic.
This game was and is the greatest. A real challenge is playing with the Bucs and using 2 quarterbacks. Vinnie has the better running speed. While Carlson has the better passing accuracy 😅
So many good memories playing this game. Bags of Doritos and case of soda we’d go from Friday night to Sunday morning with a short break for Headbangers ball on Saturday night. Those were the days
Learning how to edit this game and change the players names and attributes for future years, as well as improve/update some of the rules and game play really took it to another level, though already a favorite childhood game with friends on a bad weather day inside.
Bo Jackson was unstoppable in the original tecmo bowl. When tecmo super bowl came out. One of the changes made was player condition. I own a PS5 and still play sports games to this day, and call it nostalgia if you want, but I don’t think there has ever been a better football game made than Tecmo Super Bowl as far as enjoyment of playing and the ability to play over and over and over again without getting bored.
What I loved about the game is that it had when you might call 'comeback AI', but it wasn't cheap or game breaking.Teams would just become less forgiving of mistakes. And so games could be nail biters without feeling you got ripped off. I did hate playing against someone, who would pick a team with one of the few recievers that could 'jump' for a ball. They could just throw to them all day.
To the best of myemory it was the first game to track season stats with real players. The Oilers run n shoot was so fun I think threw for 7k or 8k yards with Warren Moon before. In middle school this game was my life for a while.
One of my favorite games of all time and I didn't play it until about a year and a half ago. I have the original Tecmo Super Bowl, which is still my favorite, but I also have 2023 and 2024 with Mahomes on both labels.
Super Tecmo Bowl had an NFL license and NFLPA and it's accessible as hell. I have been playing the rom hack that has current teams and players. It's awesome.
Bought it when it debuted & played it like I needed it to live always with the Eagles & Randall (QB Eagles). Un-defeated Superbowl Champs every year...
Recently, I've been playing with my 9yo son on my original nes I had when I was a kid and he loves it. He's asking me to play with him every day. He doesn't even know or care about the NFL (nor do I anymore). I was writing down all my stats for all the seasons I played (must have played a season with most of the team).... what I great time it was.
The NES version just might be my favorite video game of all time. Aside from the number of hours I've spent playing it over the course of my life, it included features that the NES should not have been capable of. Salute to Tecmo. (Also, I always wondered why Brett Favre wasn't the Falcons' backup in the game; thank you for shedding light on that!)
@@AllSportsHistoryNice! We didn't have an NES until 1991 and I think I got this a few days after Christmas from money so one of the handful of games got to enjoy. Got this years cart of roster off line too. Fun
i think more than the game, us older guys are more infatuated with the simplicity of our lives when the game was new. huddling around a crt with cousins, the laughs, the smell of mom's meat loaf and green beans, just total immersion.
I was today yrs old when I found out Gamestop (now) is Babbages(then)!! Tecmo Super Bowl wasnt supposed to drop around Xmas. Me and my pop went to the mall for something totally different i stepped in Babbages real quick and couldn't believe my eyes they hd Tecmo Super bowl it was like late October my pop got it but said i couldn't hv it til Xmas! Of course none of my friends believed i hd it so I hd to show and prove, eventually found my dads hiding spot switched the Tecmo cartridge with another one so if pops picked it up couldn't tell the difference😂😂 Needless to say i was the man for the winter of 91!! I kno ths was a long comment but when i saw Babbages nostalgia took over R.I.P pops!!
da Bears and da 49ers are the greatest on the original NES Tecmo Bowl. I rented Tecmo Super Bowl with a SNES when I was maybe 8 years old and although I'm a Packers fan I couldn't help choosing the Cowboys and dominating! I was happy to see Tecmo Bowl as one of the selections on the NES mini!
I play this game to this day. It was the game I played the most as a kid. I don’t think the Madden game would’ve been as successful if not for the TECMO BOWL game.
I own all three games: Tecmo Super Bowl 1-3, and bought the polymega just so I can have a back up to my Cartidges. I think I’ll be playing the games when I’m 90 years old! 🤣🤣🤣
I mean, if you know, you know. It's the best game ever made for the NES. This game made me a Bills fan. 33 years later still a Bills fan. My logo...TSB Bills colors. To this day I can still fire up the game in my NES and have a good time. TSB 4 life.

Yep definitely one of the best ever!
Well... doesn't that make it less real? Most teams don't get much worse when a player goes down
😂@@TheShepdawg9has never seen football
@TheShepdawg9 that made no sense whatsoever.
@xp8969 how often does a player going down (other than qb) mean the team is much worse?

Great video. Tecmo is alive and well! Lots of programmers make yearly updates to the game. NFL and college. There's even a guy in Texas that does a HS version.
What I like most about Tecmo was that every team and every player seemed to have their own identity. With Madden, there are no differences at all.

I felt like I played about 500 seasons I absolutely was obsessed with that game 😂
Proof please?
It’s truly a special game!
Been playing this game since its inception, doing an annual series alongside the NFL season on my channel, still an amazing game to play
Because we had to endure 10 yard fight before this came out 💀
Tecmo Super Bowl on NES is still my favorite football video game of all time and I’m 48 years old. Madden never did it for me.
Wow, my parents paid $54 for super tecmo bowl, I had no clue but I played it everyday with my friends!
Tecmo Super Bowl is the Original Fantasy Football, and is considered the goat of football games in terms of fun and entertainment.
I love this game growing up as a kid. It was also on the Sega Genesis.
This game made you believe that you could see basically everything that happened in a actual game to me
5:27 that’s the one I had. Great memories!!
Still playing my copy to this day.
I still have my original copy too!
@@AllSportsHistoryNice! We didn't have an NES until 1991 and I think I got this a few days after Christmas from money so one of the handful of games got to enjoy. Got this years cart of roster off line too. Fun
I have this ranked as the greatest NES game ever. Numerous hours played on this during my Freshman year in high school
One of the all time greats, for sure!
i think more than the game, us older guys are more infatuated with the simplicity of our lives when the game was new. huddling around a crt with cousins, the laughs, the smell of mom's meat loaf and green beans, just total immersion.
Yep a lot of great memories!
My favorite game of all time
I was today yrs old when I found out Gamestop (now) is Babbages(then)!!
I was happy to see Tecmo Bowl as one of the selections on the NES mini!
probably the best football game ever made and they should have done all sports and should have never stopped making them.
That would have been awesome!
So many fond memories…
I felt like one of the best to ever play this, it was a great and classic game with official nfl roster.
One of the best ever for sure!
Tecmo SB Paved da way for Madden & other Football games including NCAA🏈
I mean, if you know, you know. It's the best game ever made for the NES. This game made me a Bills fan. 33 years later still a Bills fan. My logo...TSB Bills colors. To this day I can still fire up the game in my NES and have a good time. TSB 4 life.
I now have the kickoff return, fumble, recovery and first down music stuck in my head.
"Down....huthuthuthuthuthuthuthuthuthuthuthuthuthut"
I love tecmo was an awesome game to play
Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl is the greatest game of all time. Hands Down
