I imagine the best part about finding an old home is finding one that still has it's original features. And the worst part about restoring an old home is undoing all the years of design decisions generations of people have decided to do in the name of style or to keep costs down. You two didn't pick an easy job, but it certainly seems very rewarding.
That tiger oak is gorgeous! Can't wait to see it finished. Y'all do such beautiful and important work saving these homes and their distinctive features.
Can we just talk about how Laine manages to look gorgeous and glamorous while sitting on the floor scrubbing other people's filth? 🤣 The pups seemed like a lot of great help, too!
I love that you guys restore it back to the original wood! I am so blessed that when I purchased my Victorian, none of the woodwork had been painted or the transom window. ❤️
It makes me happy to see you save all of this. I looooooove old houses. We built in 1999 a new Victorian an when people say you did a good job restoring that old house, we know we did good.
I cannot even imagine doing this type of work, especially with working to keep the puppies safe during the process. You guys seem to pull it off, so kudos to you!
Loving how y'all manage to get stuff done with all the "4-pawed help" - I love my furry babies too and wouldn't be able to do anything without their contributions of encouragement and faithful helping! Thanks for these!!! Love, Love, LOVE it!!!
In the 1990s we restored an 1875 pioneer Danish cottage in central Utah. An elderly neighbor said it was built for a widow on order of Brigham Young. My husband is now 85, 75% blind, in chronic pain; I'm 2 yrs NED from stage 3 cancer. Watching your videos inspired me to lug out a carved door we rescued from the Sanpete County dump and find a place for it in our 1200 sf manufactured home. Love what you're doing and how you do it-- you've put some joy in our life. Thank you!
When I was a little girl, I would visit my dad's house on the weekends and would drive by old, deteriorating homes and would dream of buying one and fixing it up, restoring back to it's former glory and raising my children there. I would often say this exact dream and had several people tell me it's far-fetched and would never work. I found you channel after Louise and have watched your videos here and there and you really make it look possible. Thank you Laine and Kevin for these videos! Hopefully, one day, I could do this too! I can't wait to see the finishing results!
Go for it! We did and don't regret it. But be ready for some hard work and nasty/nice surprises. If possible live in the house and then redo but remember that these houses had their flow and climate so don't throw all the walls out ...
This is such a precious little home with amazing features and great high ceilings!!! I love watching you tackle her step by step. Keep these updates coming!! Hard to believe you are investing so much of yourselves and then will sell her. But what a commitment you are making for her future!!!
Good job on those windows! Besides your loving restoration, think of all the careful work that went into creating them. Using old windows adds to the character of the home. Excellent wood work is a heritage. A gift to the next generation. A subtle challenge- something to equal.
The tiger oak is so beautiful. I just can't fathom why anyone would have wanted to paint it in the first place. And Tank is just the cutest little puff ball! I love seeing how much you two love your pups.
I really love the longer videos, I'm here to watch and enjoy the content. You two put such hard work into what you do, I don't think anyone would get it if the videos were shorter.
Restoration is very hard to repair from everybody’s mistakes, but what you’re doing is so rewarding because you’re loving what was once a grand home, and you’re making it grand again!!
First, I am super excited to see the mantle finished! Second, I love Curiosity Stream. I don't know if your code will work for my renewal that is coming up, but for anyone unsure about it, this service is totally worth it.
The tiger oak mantel is BEAUTIFUL. I love Tiger Oak.. (and purpleheart, and wenge.. basically exotic woods.) Dep sealer/lubricant works as well for "wood molds" as it does for ceramic mold making.
You guys are amazing - I don't think many people realize the amount of energy doing the work you do takes! I moved into my 62 year old home 31 years ago and spend every evening for a month stripping paint off the baseboards and fireplace and windows. Am I glad I did? Yes . . would I ever do it again no! It's definitely a labor of love. I look at them now and wonder where I found the energy. Although I was 35 at the time. 😯 I really enjoy watching you and Kevin do this work! Thank you for what you do!
Wow! This was so satisfying to watch! You’re making wonderful progress on Pearl. She’s such a little treasure and I’m really glad you’re saving her! Those two little arms cracked me up, Laine! Kevin, you make plaster repair look easy! I hope your demo encouraged others to give it a try. It’s lovely to see how you two work together and I love seeing your sweet dogs!🌸
Love the journey. Love the zeal that comes when doing what you love. The place is going to be vibrantly, lovingly wonderful. Cheers from the bleachers.
B-e-a utifl!! You guys have plowed through once again and made such headway!! Make a great team! Could not believe you had tigerwood! Definitely worth the effort for that beauty. So excited to see what's next!!
I can’t believe that beautiful wood was under all that paint. That’s why most people tear things out because all that paint makes it look old and beat up and cheap. No one would believe all that detail and expensive wood was there. My jaw dropped.
I have had better luck getting paint off of hardware with gentle heat rather than with a stripper. For small pieces, I simply cook the bits and bobs in a slow cooker for several hours. Works great. For great big pieces like yours, I plop a horse trough on the barbecue and start a low fire. It's more convenient on a gas barbecue that can be set for temperature but can be managed with charcoal or wood. Gentle heat, a slow simmer, over a long period of time is the trick. I have had strippers that discolored the hardware so badly I had to send it out to be re-plated. Love your channel - hope this helps. Yes, I am WILDLY excited to see the tiger oak mantlepiece restored to its former glory!
The information on Smart Strip was very helpful. We live in a famous forerunner of the post modern movement that was built in 1939. Not your cup of tea but some idiot painted over very lovely original paneling. We have SS, though probably didn't leave it on long enough. I love your series and it gives me the impetus to carry on with our wonderful home. Also planning to strip the hardware on the kitchen cabinets (original/handmade) as it makes the cupboards hard to close. Many thanks from Central California!
I just adore All of your restoration videos . God bless you both for utilizing all your knowledge & skills to restore quality vintage architecture . Preserving history , old world skills that so beautiful & unique .
You two clean up good! I love to hear that cause I'm a barefootin', no makeup, long hair in a ponytail, jeans & tee shirt wearing TN girl. But I have spent the last 35 years in Tampa Bay. Love the unusual combo of building styles! And you both look fabulous. The antiques were fantastic!! Again, thank you!!! I would love to go junkies with you two, just for the educational aspect!!
I feel you on the painted hardware. The first apartment I lived in was built in 1924. The hardware and hinges had layers and layers of paint from decades and decades of slap dash repainting between tenants. Many of the cupboards had so much paint on them that I couldn't even close them 😂
I can see now that this little pearl of a house will be a diamond in the end after y’all get done. Love your heart for saving the historic integrity of the home. ❤️😊
You can use an old crock pot to simmer off the paint from smaller hard ware. It works great and no additional chemicals. Gets the paint out of details easily.
I grew up in an old Victorian house overlooking Boston (MA) Harbor. It was the summer home built for the family of a ship captain. It still had much of its charm when my folks bought it. Fast forward 20 years... the house was sold to an artist who wanted the house for its location but didn't want a Victorian house. The wrap around porch was closed in and the house sided with vinyl siding. So sad. I love watching you fix up Pearl -- fond memories of the house I grew up in.
I think the tiger woods is beautiful! I have an antique piano that is the tiger wood. I would love for someone that could love it to give it a new home.
Watching your videos give us the knowledge and momentum to continue restoring parts of our 96 year old home, so thank you! Also sharing your "superpowers" of doggie support throughout the day to keep one motivated is fantastic.
What a loving dog! Years ago we were mending window frames & doors on our Queen Anne Victorian one story cottage. Now we are placing our house for sale because of downsizing. I really wish I had found your videos before this year! Beautiful job on those windows Laine!!
I wish I were younger and could still do the hard stuff. I used to do restoration’s w/my late-husband. You both work together well. This is interesting and fun to watch!
Give me an old house, any day, over a new house. I get so upset when I see farmland sold so a new housing development can go up. Why can't people do what you two do and save the life of an old house? I LOVE old mantel pieces and furniture...they sure don't make things like they used to! So excited to see BOTH mantels when they're done!
I think you all are doing a fantastic job restoring this home. I need to try my hand at re-glazing old windows and this was very interesting to me. And those are mighty cute dogs ya got there too!
1 out of 10 - 10! Lovely mantel, think about it the beautiful wood was once a beautiful tree! Thank-you Laine and Kevin. Laine you have an encyclopedic knowledge, and an enormous work ethic

❤absolutely beautiful work!

Can we just talk about how Laine manages to look gorgeous and glamorous while sitting on the floor scrubbing other people's filth? 🤣 The pups seemed like a lot of great help, too!
Right?! She's so beautiful even when she's apologizing for being scruffy. Laine does scruffy with incredible panache. 💕😆
I love that you guys restore it back to the original wood! I am so blessed that when I purchased my Victorian, none of the woodwork had been painted or the transom window. ❤️
I am a 100 out of 10 excited that you found that BEAUTIFUL tiger wood under All that paint!!!!

I couldn't believe how beautiful that oak was on the mantle piece. It was worth all your hard work restoring it...

My aunt and uncle lived at 709 state st. Natchez for at least 50 years and we visit them often. I still love Natchez.
What a beautiful couple...Kevin is such! A Gentleman....Laine, there's reasons upon reasons you fell for this man. Blessings! Carry On!
Please no "noise" music. Perfect door! Thank-you for this channel. Blessings!

All I can think of seeing that tiger oak mantle is a gorgeous 48" round tiger oak pedestal table with 6 chairs and a vase in the middle!
When I was a little girl, I would visit my dad's house on the weekends and would drive by old, deteriorating homes and would dream of buying one and fixing it up, restoring back to it's former glory and raising my children there. Chase your dreams, save every penny you can spare. A couple extra bucks a week adds up over a decade!

Holy cow, that tiger oak mantel is beautiful!! Ten, 10, to the tenth degree!!
The disembodied arms clapping cracked me up Laine!
Yes, and Laine doing voices for the disembodied arms, laughed hard at that one.
I really love the longer videos, I'm here to watch and enjoy the content. You two put such hard work into what you do, I don't think anyone would get it if the videos were shorter.
It’s not crazy, it’s hard work, and it’s amazing! Way to go guys!

I love the features of older homes. The mirror over the fireplace, the transoms, pocket doors, large rooms, and, sometimes, ceiling medallions.
The mantle will be gorgeous ❤️
Yay I love tiger oak 10 on restoring the fireplace!

That little black fuzzy dog is cracking me up! lol He/she is loving the attention lol A toothbrush helps to scrub off the old paint too.
