  • coming at you with another sort of vlog-style decluttering video of all the tiny things youtubers don’t show you in their decluttering videos. I feel like the stress of actually decluttering your stuff is rarely shown and more just talked about as a way to motivate you to get rid of things yourself. it's sadly not very relatable or realistic... but I’m actually walking through the trenches with you and filming as I go.

I stumbled across this video, and I love it. I get the chaos. I get the overwhelm. I also have ADHD. I watched your later Decluttering video before this one and you did so well! You did the thing in that video that works the best for me; start with the HELL YES’. Then compare everything else you’re considering to those “perfect” items and it becomes so much easier to let things go. Keep up keeping up!

I can so relate to you, and I love your comments on trying to curate your perfect, minimalist wardrobe, but also accepting that it will take time. Thank you for being so candid and real, and for making me realize I am not the only one with similar issues with collecting clothing I don’t need, and struggling to make moves to let go of things. Cheers, Grace!

This video was kinda all over the place & I totally get it. Decluttering can become overwhelming and you want to do so much but end up doing so little. I think you should concentrate on one room at a time & go through every single item & make a decision instead of moving on to another place to declutter. Also, I know the struggle of just having a bag of decluttered things lying around. You need to just drop it off at the donations center. If not, you really have not decluttered anything. Good luck, the minimalism journey is tough. But with time you start to be able to see more clear and start to really let go of attachment.

I've recently started following your decluttering and no-buy 2024 journey and I'm HERE FOR IT. It's inspired me and I'm right behind you, started decluttering and made my lists yesterday. I also just noticed that we both have a tiny lightning bolt tattoo on our left wrist so I know the universe was looking out for me when she pushed me to your videos :')

Late to the declutter party....! Re the suitcase - I would keep it and store things inside that don't get used often. Then put a label on it to remind you what's in there. You have room to keep it and it can still be useful in the meantime.
Also don't make guilt a part of your process as I think that's adding to the lack of motivation? There needs to be a reward so you're inspired to start and to keep going - whether that's visualising the final decluttered look or including something creative somehow. For example I do a lot of gardening but don't enjoy weeding/mulching so I put cuttings etc in areas I've just cleaned up which I really enjoy :) Kind of a similar process.
You might need to get more cut-throat with your process, like what would you rush for if there was a fire coming within the next 24 hours?! Then put that to one side and give yourself a time limit for all the little knick knacks etc. Hopefully you can simplify your process and make it more uplifting for yourself.

I ended up decluttering it because I wasn't using it and it just ended up storing more clutter inside of it anyways. in terms of everything else, I came up with a good system to help me get a hit more cut throat and I'll be releasing a video about it on Monday!

When you declutter...put it right into your car where you see it every time you go out...then you will stop by a drop off location (consignment or donation) to get it out of your sight! I won't do a buy nothing group as I want it out and I don't have the patience to meet people in a parking lot (they aren't coming to my home). I sell almost nothing unless it's value is over $100 and will sell easily. For "memory" stuff like the tassel/cord, take a picture...I call look at a picture of it anytime (including on my phone wherever I am) and not have it gathering dust as it has no purpose. For clothes, if I wouldn't replace it if I lost/damaged it, it goes.

Grace, first of all, if I may say so: You are such a sweet person. Thanks for the nice video. I was thinking about this: Have you tried to create the end result first? If you imagine the picture in your head of let‘s say one room or even just one shelf. What do you want it to look like? So take everything out and only put things back that belong to that „picture in your head“. Also don’t put back all the „I’m-not-sure-if-I’m-gonna-keep-this-stuff“. The effect is, that you will see your final goal right in front of you. Once you saw this you don’t want to go back to the old „picture“ or some „step-in-between-picture“. This may make it much easier to let go all of the stuff that doesn‘t belong to your „ideal picture“. All the best to you. Have a great day (Minimalist from Germany).

I struggled to watch the video till the end because it made me fell so uncomfortable. Then I realized that you seemed to struggle yourself. Therefore I hope you will accept my advice.
I have no clue what ADHD means for your daily life. But if I understand it well, it makes everything more complicated for you, right ? So my advice would be : keep declutter simple. First thing first : you're not decluttering if the stuff is not leaving your house, you're just moving it around. If you want to get the real benefits of a decluttered home, you have to effectively get rid of the stuff. Otherwise, you're just increasing your visual and mental clutter with a pile of stuff you still have to dispose of. So I would strongly recommend that you do not begin a new session of decluttering until you get rid of the result of the previous one.
Second : the decision to sell only a very few items was the right one in my opinion. But I would go even further : try to find a place where you could give all the rest (clothes, shoes, jewelry, books, dishes, etc) without trying to find the best place for each category. Sure, it would be great to get something in exchange of your books, but it would be even better to get the books (and everything else) out of your apartment. Same for the to be recycled clothes. If you have to go to 10 different places, you're increasing the time and energy you'll need to deal with your decluttered stuff, thus increasing the risks of the stuff staying in your home for an extended period of time. I don't know how a buy nothing group works, but if it requires additional steps (taking pictures ? describing each object ? making appointments with people ?), I'm not sure it is a good solution in your present situation either.
These are my 2 cents in hope you would struggle less.

    • @gracenevitt
      @gracenevitt  Рік тому +1

this is really good advice!! thank you.
part of the point of this video was trying to give myself the focus to make a plan for my things that I haven't gotten rid of yet. all I have to do now is drop the for days bags off at usps and drop everything else off.
sometimes certain all-in-one drop-off places are hard to find (or get to without a car) in NYC. I will likely try to drop as much as I can in my donate bin in my building's basement to reduce the amount of places I'm sending off my things because that is a really good point.
thanks for watching and commenting!! truly appreciate the support and feedback!

I really agree with this so much. I understand the ADHD part very well and in the beginning of my decluttering I would make huge piles etc but now I just do NOT do that. If I lived near you I’d bring over my van and load it up for you in 10 minutes 😂
