@@silver1man Hi, Scott and thank you. I think it was a comment by Elvis Costello on Ron's album (disc) "Retriever" that prompted me to buy the disc of someone I'd never heard of before in 2004. It was a great choice. Ron's performances on Elvis's "Spectacle" show are some of my favorites.
"If there was trouble at home, she kept it to herself". Eleven words--he only needed eleven words to tell the entire story. That is pure poetry. I don't love every Ron Sexsmith song; sometimes he doesn't have a clue about melody. But when he is truly together, nobody can match him. This one is brilliant, and all of his work deserves attention.
In my opinion, Ron Sexsmith is the most captivating singer songwriter of all time. i have listened to countless artists in my life but no other draws me in like this guy does.I listen to his music at least 300 days out of the year. Every cd of his i've played countless times and never get tiring to me..he is magic in every sense of the word..Thanks Ron
Was practicing my Darts at the Railway Club years ago in Vancouver. Some guy named Ron Sexsmith was playing up front of the bar on that tiny stage. The room was sparse and the rest of the bar pretty much empty. I threw my darts for a while and then couldn't help but to be drawn to the front of the bar by how deep and haunting his music was. I looked around the room and thought what the hell is going on here? This guy needs to be playing to a much larger crowd. Went back to the bar for beer as Ron took a break. He stood beside me as I ordered a pint. I shook my head and walked away. The guy is an amazing talent. He must be a huge star on some other planet I guess.
Beautiful song! Sometime in the early 90s, I went to see Cry Cry Cry at Town Hall in NYC. My girlfriend (now wife) and I were having drinks in the lobby, waiting for the main act to come on. Decided to wander in and see what the opener was like. Ron Sexsmith. Became lifelong fans immediately. Probably contributed to our falling in love and marrying. Still love his music today.
Ron has a McCartney-like gift for melody. The kind that makes seem like it's easy to come up with a nice tune, though it actually isn't. And so does Costello, who has done some collab with both at some point. What an awesome threesome.
This was the first of Ron Sexsmith's songs that I ever heard, and it hooked me immediately. Beautiful melody, and brilliant storytelling. He's one of the best.
This is my favorite RS song. It almost always brings me to the verge of tears, not just because of the well-chosen details, structure, and pacing of the narrative, and not just because of the sensitive, understated performance, but because the song once did not exist and now does: it reminds me of the beauty that humans are capable of creating.
...saw him last night at Leamington Spa. I've seen over 300 live shows and this went straight to number 1!! Just amazing.....its hard to think of new superlatives, gives you faith in humanity!!! Just go and see him....new dates added for later this year in the UK!!!
Ron is still writing amazing songs with lovely lyrics & pretty tunes today. An amazing artist & a world class talent. Strawberry Blond was the first of Ron's songs I heard but not the last. I have only purchased 6 of his albums so I am delighted to still have several more to listen to.
Absolutely wonderful song, one of my favourites. But who messed up the video? The song is about a nine-year old child in grade 4 with a sad, secret home life -- it's not about a twenty-year-old, tennis-playing fashion model.
Strange. I came here expecting a guy with a million subs but instead a small tight beautiful little 9k community. I can see whyvhecis regarded as a musician's musician. 🙂
around 1996 I got a free Interscope Records sampler with my CD purchase at the record store. This song was on it. I thought, "What a weird name, Sexsmith..." I heard this song and to this very day I think it is one of the most simplistically beautiful and heartfelt songs I've ever heard. It comes from a place so vulnerable and honest, the stuff of which real songs are written. Just bitterly serene.
Yay another song with my name in it! I mean there's always 'Amanda' by Boston (euck, 80s) and there's 'Amanda' by Waylon Jennings, which are both kind of nice, but nobody cool. But Ron Sexsmith! Yay! So happy to have discovered this :)
Saw him at The Sage in Gateshead, England (great venue) on 27 June 2011 and he was fantastic. Although I've heard the name for years I am a recent convert and Long Player Late Bloomer is my first Sexsmith CD. I loved it from the first play and love it more with each listen.
The concert was fabulous. Bought the album, Long player, late bloomer. Its a gem. Ron Sexsmith writes such wonderful songs. His work is a masterpiece. I am mesmerized by the pure beauty of Ron's voice. Wow. x
I have to post a comment here that one tiny bit of the vocal here reminds me of "Whole Wide World" by Wreckless Eric because, otherwise, when I revisit this song, my brain won't let me enjoy this vastly superior song until I remember what it is exactly that I'm being reminded of.
Great singer so under appreciated , I wish for you to do more tours , the trick for that is Let people know well in advance even ask some of to spread the word that you will be In their area . Your really good!
The latest interview has him saying that he can't afford the band 'he would like' to have with him on tour. How sad is that. I've seen him live. Not a lot of energy, just the purest of giving...
@nailedwit I just saw him in Minneapolis Monday. He's touring with "his band". These are the guys he's been playing with, especially the drummer - Kerr, for some time. Definitely a big bonus to get the energy of the band. Here's the quote you were referring to - “Sometimes I can’t afford to bring my band on the road,” he says. “In my mind, I have a vision of a bigger show. I’d love to be able to pay my band more, and to be able to offer them more work.”
This song is so good, you could make a movie from it. Such vivid images. 'Sorry you had a tough life. Ron at least brings to light that you cannot always tell what's going on in someone's personal home life. This song reminds me of Suzanne Vega's - "Luka". That opened a lot of eyes and ears.
Artists like Elvis Costello & Nick Lowe sing Ron's praises. I hope more people will in 2015. He deserves that BIG break (so far, it's been medium-size).
That's a good point. It's hard to be heard above all the crappy stuff that's out there now. And forget about mainstream radio play (he would have had it 20 years ago)
Madeleine Hague But... I think he is able to make a living with his craft / art... so, I think he is Ok. :) Plus, he had one of his beautiful tunes in a film..
I was watching some Cillian Murphy fanmade video and on the artist section, ytube notes as Ron Sexsmith. So i was a bit curious cuz the intro of the video was quite soothing, nice w melancholy melody.Next thing i know is that i stumbled upon this guy :(.Must be one of the good thing ever in this shitty nights
You beautiful man. I get this, too. This is almost religious fucking music to me. I throw in "fucking" to let people know I love real, not fake. I heard this music about seven years ago and i absolutely love almost everything Ron Sexsmith has ever done. The man has been pointed on the way and we all know it.
'Can't wait to see you tonight at the Danforth Music Hall! My fourth time. 'Sorry you left Toronto, but hope you and Colleen are happy in Stratford, ON.
Yes, he just moved there with his wife. Big article in the Globe and Mail newspaper about it a couple of months ago. Rents too high in Toronto. He's going to miss a lot about his old n-hood, but Stratford is pretty nice! And, now they have their very first house that they BOUGHT!
I think you'd find him very nice, very shy. We are huge fans. I have many of his CD's - yes, CD's. I go out and buy his recordings, no downloading. Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney, Chris Martin, Sheryl Crowe, Nick Lowe...they all love Ron. He should be able to afford to buy a house in Toronto with talent like that, but the music industry is cruel, fickle...don't get me started....
Madeleine Hague I believe he's having a concert in town in august so I'll have to meet him then if I don't run it on him around town. and yes I agree, he's a brilliant songwriter
You fall out of love for a girl because she didn't like a singer? People have different tastes and that dose not mean they don't know what true art is.
There was this girl who I was totally in(fatuated) love with for like 5 years (long story). One day I let her listen to this song and she said she didn't "like this guy". I knew at that moment that this was the wrong girl for me. Ron Sexsmith is like my Litmus test for chicks. I just can't respect a girl who doesn't appreciate true art.
For the record, I didn't break it off with her solely because she didn't like R.S. But, it did give me pause and think I might be seeing something in her that wasn't actually there. Maybe I'd crafted a bit of an illusion. In the end I was totally right. I started seeing how she really didn't appreciate things. Her not liking R.S. was just the 1st crack in the illusion I'd allowed myself to believe in. Time flies and years are piled, I've forgot on all about her.
Love Ron's voice, and his beautiful melancholy style. I most definitely hear some influences of early original solo Michael Nesmith (Monkees) Rockabilly music style. Check out Nez's Joanne. ua-cam.com/video/9ZiHjmE-5BI/v-deo.html
How can Ron not be recognized as one of the greatest songwriter/singers of this age?
Elvis Costello said -- in a concert 15 years ago in Tokyo-- he was the best songwriter on the planet.
This is brilliant, literally as good as the singer songwriter genre gets. Why isnt he massive ?
I agree !!! ❤
"If there was trouble at home, she kept it to herself". Eleven words--he only needed eleven words to tell the entire story. That is pure poetry. I don't love every Ron Sexsmith song; sometimes he doesn't have a clue about melody. But when he is truly together, nobody can match him. I totally agree

10 years late with a response but I fully agree, fabulous songwriter!
Was practicing my Darts at the Railway Club years ago in Vancouver. Some guy named Ron Sexsmith was playing up front of the bar on that tiny stage. "He must be a huge star on some other planet I guess." :))))
Your story reminds me of a GREAT movie.
Begin Again
Everyone needs to see it.
I’m jealous of you!!!!!!!
Beautiful song! Sometime in the early 90s, I went to see Cry Cry Cry at Town Hall in NYC. My girlfriend (now wife) and I were having drinks in the lobby, waiting for the main act to come on. Mr Sexsmith this song is as good as Any written by Anyone Ever.
My all-time fave from the great songwriter, Mr. Sexsmith.
one of the most beautiful songs ever written!rons out there on his own!
My favourite ever songwriter, wonderful 😊
This song is a tiny piece of perfection in -- and a momentary refuge from -- an irreparably broken world.
This should have at least a million views.
AT LEAST
Man oh man, Ron is such a great songwriter. I just love this song.

i always cry from it

such a beautiful song.. and one of so many too. why ron is not known by everybody on the planet is beyond me.
A Masterpice
Ron is still writing amazing songs with lovely lyrics & pretty tunes today. An amazing artist & a world class talent. Strawberry Blond was the first of Ron's songs I heard but not the last. I have only purchased 6 of his albums so I am delighted to still have several more to listen to.
Ron's brilliance as always. Makes one think how many real Amanda's there are out there in this world.
There's something so special about Ron's songs. I knew an Amanda who was a strawberry blonde, this song takes me back.
Amazingly talent ❤️
Hello There 👋🏻👍🏻
Beautiful Comment..
Absolutely wonderful song, one of my favourites. But who messed up the video? The song is about a nine-year old child in grade 4 with a sad, secret home life -- it's not about a twenty-year-old, tennis-playing fashion model.
Really pissed. And this is really beautiful, if you can't see it you have covid of the ears
Saw him on a tv show years ago in which he did "Every day I write the book" with Elvis Costello as well and have never forgotten this song.
One of my favorite Ron Sexsmith tunes.
Mine too
within seconds the melody has you and then the story............
Once i had a strawberry blonde. .Now she has gone. Thanks for the memories. Still feel the love.
Beautiful, just beautiful

This Man is a legend...pure and simple!!!! Thank you very much for the amazing post!!!
A fabulous story song, perfect.
love this song...it actually brings a tear to my eye............reminds me of a girl in elementary school......Lynette Duden.
One of the best Singer/Songwriters :-) go Ron - he tells stories I can only get lost in
Ok, this is seriously the first video I've ever seen on UA-cam with over a 100.000 views that has 0 dislikes.
Definitely not by chance, I might add.
Yay another song with my name in it! I mean there's always 'Amanda' by Boston (euck, 80s) and there's 'Amanda' by Waylon Jennings, which are both kind of nice, but nobody cool. But Ron Sexsmith! Yay! So happy to have discovered this :)
So glad I found him, better late than never!
This is his best one.
Quite simply the best.
Perfection.
Aesthetic tastes are no small thing and are sometimes significant indicators of many aspects of compatibility.
Very good point.
Couldn't agree more..He's the greatest singer-songwriter to ever walk the earth :)
This is one of my favourite songs. Thanks Ron.
beautiful voice with a wonderful soaring spirit in his lyrics, late convert just lovin his music!
I’m going to see him on November 8 (2024) can’t wait!!!
ron is the man
Saw him at The Sage in Gateshead, England (great venue) on 27 June 2011 and he was fantastic. Although I've heard the name for years I am a recent convert and Long Player Late Bloomer is my first Sexsmith CD. I loved it from the first play and love it more with each listen.
It's a shame that I just found you now. you are an incredible songwriter. And, not so bad with that axe either.❤🎸
Some of his songs are really complex on the guitar. Really underated guitarist very percise, great soloist. Hard Bargain has a realn neat guitar solo
滑り台の件りで本当に切なくなる・・・・・・。
最後にアマンダさんがサヴァイブしてるのを控えめに表現していて、こちらは、とても救われた気分。
もっと多くの人に認知してもらいたい作品の一つ。
The concert was fabulous. Bought the album, Long player, late bloomer. Its a gem.
Ron Sexsmith writes such wonderful songs. His work is a masterpiece.
I am mesmerized by the pure beauty of Ron's voice. Wow. x
Pure genius. Ron played this song at his Paris show last night and i melted right there and then. He really is a rare talent.
Pop craftsman like Ron don't come around too often.
I love this.
Should be a legend.
THE BEST CHANTER I HAVE EVER HEARD- KNOCKS ME OUT EVERY TIME!
Lovely song
Such a great track...
I have to post a comment here that one tiny bit of the vocal here reminds me of "Whole Wide World" by Wreckless Eric because, otherwise, when I revisit this song, my brain won't let me enjoy this vastly superior song until I remember what it is exactly that I'm being reminded of.
Beautiful. 🥰
Incredible.
Great singer so under appreciated , I wish for you to do more tours , the trick for that is
Let people know well in advance even ask some of to spread the word that you will be
In their area . Your really good!
Great son and vid Ron !! Grtz from Amsterdam
this song is to beautiful for words, or even thoughts for that matter
Great Job - Great feel - Just Awesome 5 ☆☆☆☆☆
I think this album was produced primarily by Mitchell Froom. Daniel Lanois produced just the last song; the second version of "There's a Rhythm"
The latest interview has him saying that he can't afford the band 'he would like' to have with him on tour. How sad is that.
I've seen him live. Not a lot of energy, just the purest of giving...

He just sang my life....

My favourite Ron Sexsmith song, although he has many great ones.
Mine too.
classic song
I love!
Nice body of work Ron, I am so looking forward to seeing you in Pembroke. cheers
Got a similar vibe to it to a song about James Dean from the album 100 Phil Ochs Fans Can't Be Wrong.
Such a beautiful story within a gorgeous song.
Artists like Elvis Costello & Nick Lowe sing Ron's praises. I hope more people will in 2015. He deserves that BIG break (so far, it's been medium-size).
Costello once said that he thinks Ron was born in the wrong time "meaning era"
That's a good point. It's hard to be heard above all the crappy stuff that's out there now. And forget about mainstream radio play (he would have had it 20 years ago)
Madeleine Hague But... I think he is able to make a living with his craft / art... so, I think he is Ok. :) Plus, he had one of his beautiful tunes in a film..
That's great. He has a new album dropping this week.
I know, I saw! I want to hear it, Madeleine,
I was watching some Cillian Murphy fanmade video and on the artist section, ytube notes as Ron Sexsmith. So i was a bit curious cuz the intro of the video was quite soothing, nice w melancholy melody.Next thing i know is that i stumbled upon this guy :(.Must be one of the good thing ever in this shitty nights
This makes me want to play tennis.
That was really deep. ;)
There are clarinets in this!
A great performance by Ron (produced by Daniel Lanois).
Nice song and beautiful girl
Very nice

I heard this music about seven years ago and i absolutely love almost everything Ron Sexsmith has ever done. The man has been pointed on the way and we all know it.
😍
Unreal... seems like such a nice guy too. Which is probably more important.
Thanks Ron, reminds me of certain little girls in my own youth. Very poignant.
Respect =)
I agree with your old girl friend. This song blows. What is her number? We may have the same taste in music.
'Can't wait to see you tonight at the Danforth Music Hall! My fourth time. 'Sorry you left Toronto, but hope you and Colleen are happy in Stratford, ON.
Madeleine Hague wait, does he live in Stratford?
Yes, he just moved there with his wife. Big article in the Globe and Mail newspaper about it a couple of months ago. Rents too high in Toronto. He's going to miss a lot about his old n-hood, but Stratford is pretty nice! And, now they have their very first house that they BOUGHT!

Why does UA-cam switch to autoplay after this video, when I have it set autoplay off for other videos
I miss those days of Bill Bonk on bass...
There was this girl who I was totally in(fatuated) love with for like 5 years (long story). One day I let her listen to this song and she said she didn't "like this guy". Pahus vie... tämä on aivan käsittämättömän kaunis veto. Oisiko Ronin paras?
Why didn't they get an actual Strawberry Blonde for the video...?
Love Ron's voice, and his beautiful melancholy style. I most definitely hear some influences of early original solo Michael Nesmith (Monkees) Rockabilly music style. Check out Nez's Joanne. ua-cam.com/video/9ZiHjmE-5BI/v-deo.html
Did she have Strawberry Blonde hair?
The first time I heard this song I thought of my high school friend. Same scenario, different hair color though.
