We did a drive by look at this monument after seeing Rushmore back in 2012. But another museum to check out in South Dakota is the Akta Lakota museum located in Chamberlain. Beautiful artwork and artifacts. Can't wait until my kids get a little older to get back out there and have them experience the trip with us. Thank you for the sharing the video.

Thank you for sharing the info about the museum. I will have to check it out next time we head west. Thanks for visiting FamilyTravels!

When I lived in Rapid City in the 90's, they had a volks march to the top of the monument every year. Cost $3 and you got a patch for completing it. Great views from the top and the head is enormous. Mt. Rushmore could sit on the arm.

A: No. You go to the gate and pay 25 bucks to see this 'monument' that looks the same as it did in 1970 and visit their museum.

Yes, I have done a lot of research after visiting and not much has changed for many years. There is a lot of controversy surrounding this memorial and I am not sure the project will progress anytime soon. Thanks for visiting Family Travels.

After visiting the memorial, I read more about it and there seems to be a lot of controversy. Many native Americans are upset primarily because a white family is benefiting from the monument and not native people. Chief Standing bear bought the land from the US but the Sculptors family controls the nonprofit. The not profit reportedly brought in 12 million in 2020 yet no progress has been made on the carving.
The US government sued a few years ago to try and take control but they were not successful. The Kiolkowski family says they are trying to continue the work but the rock is very difficult to carve. I have seen many comments where independent Geologist seem to agree. One even said the memorial will never be completed because the rock has many cracks and fissures so completion would be impossible. The Mt. Rushmore monument design was changed several times due to the rock.
Another issue is the fact that many native Americans said the sculpture is not accurate because pointing is considered a rude gesture and no chief would ever point. The University of South Dakota is now somehow involved as well now.
I am no rock or sculpture expert but I would like to see the memorial altered so Cray horse is just sitting on a horse and not pointing. Perhaps this will help make the carving easier and more stable and not insult the indigenous people. I would then like to see scholarships created at the Univ. of South Dakota for people of the Lakota tribe. This would be a positive way to give back to the native people of South Dakota. But only time will tell.

@@familytravels2679 Thanks for that information Shane! and sad to hear that it is not the native people that is benefiting from it.
I like your idea on how to alter the carving to be a positive outcome for the indigenous people. And if that time comes to start working again hope the rocks will work together to do it well. Though for now only time will tell and even with that, there still a lot of tourist going there.

@Derrick Bridges Thanks for subscribing and thanks for your comments. I read a lot about this monument after visiting and there is a lot of controversy and accusations regarding this monument. I read that many geologist say the rock is very hard to work with and may even crumble. The family has said the same thing. Hopefully they will honor their fathers work and vision as well as respect the Lakota traditions and create a monument that we can all be proud of.

It will never be completed... as years go by - the costs of completing this massive project will exponentially go up thereby making it unfeasible to see this Chief Crazy Horse Memorial finally finished.

If only I had the money to give that it would be completed. They also plan to build a university and hospital to teach indians to become doctors. Been there it's overwhelming what's been done

Thanks for the thoughtful comments. Hopefully something will be done because it seems like no progress has been made for a long time. I think it goes deeper than money. It is also about who controls the project and what motivates them.

Crazy Horse was never a chief - he was a shirt wearer for a spell

@@familytravels2679 As I thought; after the old man died and his sons got tired, the project is as good as dead.
The rock DOES look bad, so re-draw and start again. Technology has improved, the rock can be scanned and a better way can be found in a few days, so where is the University on that?
      Sitting on it, I guess.
I take this as proof that the Indigs are a lot more American than they care to admit; they are allowing Red Tape and the problems it crates define the situation, instead of just solving the problem.
1- I doubt very much that enough people went there to generate 12 million in any year, and if so that number will be dropping off steeply once people realize there isn't much to see there.
2- the mess of ownership needs to be untangled and the Family bought-out. Everyone has their price.
3- if 1,000 Lakota climbed up there and started working away with hammers and chisels, it sure would gather a lot of attention and let people know they are serious. All they would have to do is be safe about it and follow a plan so that they are doing no real damage. Sure, 10 minutes with dynamite would do more than they could all day, but it's about making a point.... and not opening any more cracks up.
4- it is a measure of how little actual concern there is out there that none of the above is happening.
I have heard that Mount Rushmore could last 800k years or more, and possibly be the last remaining evidence of human life on this planet. Get Crazy Horse done and you'd have something that lasts just as long that makes Rushmore look small.
