I just realized that during the tutoring scene, the teacher immediately calls out Ollie's bullshit from the start: "Nobody can read that! It's 50 books!"
100% some viewers end up believing a lot of what Oliver says, but Oliver is a liar. The film hints he is't as smart as he makes out; he is unlikely to have read all the books, he had to read up on the plates purposely before pretending he just knew about art and pottery, Felix bursts out laughing when the parents say Oliver is Oxford "top scholar" and his plan to kill the family was likely made up on the fly - he originally just wanted Felix.
Yep, its was more obvious when I watched it the second time. But I still have mixed feelings about those lecture beacause Archie clearly didnt do anything about his study, like literally I dont even know what he was doing at the school. 😀 I just hated everyone in this movie.
Good call! I just thought Oliver was an over achiever, reading all 50 books. But it was BS from the get go. However, he was an overachiever, did all he had to, to win the castle. 😏
As an avid reader who averages over 100 books a year myself this is one thing that I just accepted at first, like maybe he'd already read some of the books before if he reads a lot like I do, but clearly it turned out he was not that type of person and it started to not check out for him, haha. It's all clearer the second time around. Such a fascinating unreliable narrative.
That monologue Venetia said to him at the end describes what the movie is about perfectly. He got in there & destroyed EVERYBODY. She hit the nail on the head. Great movie. & Barry is awesome he never fails great actor
The more I watch this movie, the more endearing the father becomes to me. He’s such a sweet man. A bit unaware but very naive at the same time. I like to imagine had Felix been blessed to live to be an old man, he’d be like his dad
Yeah. Sir James is super cute and endearing. The way his face lights up when Oliver pretends to show interest in history. I'm glad Oliver didn't murder him like the rest of the Catton family.
@@johnnyblue07 right?! So sweet! And when he gets excited to wear his suit of armor. And how he leans forward to engage and meet Oliver. And yet he had to do all the dirty work so Elsbeth wouldn’t have to (Running off Pamela, Farleigh, Oliver), so he still is respectable.
“WTF did I just watch?!” Is a common statement for many who watched this movie. There were people retching in the theatre where we saw Saltburn. That was followed by mass confusion, laughter, disgust more confusion. Two months later, and after revisit countless times, I still can’t answer the question as to WTF did I just watch 🤣
38:31 That actually made me laugh so much. The way Nikki asked that question so innocently while looking up at Steven, and then stifling laughter afterwards. Steven's face/response was priceless. lmao
10/10 the whole movie is about putting clues everywhere in every shots because Oliver is telling the story to us and manipulating us the same way he did to them. Felix is so handsome and you want to embrace their relationship but then he switch up. The cinematography is really top notch. You get to understand the intentions of Oliver by his facial expression and the way he’s waiting on Felix or the others to trust him and has pity for him. Once I realized that I said « ok he’s a manipulator » the fact that Oliver missed his hit with the stone because his father wasn’t dead…
13:12 At a party, mixed group of people, you see an attractive girl and after you tell your parents that you met a nice girl. They tell you that she's your cousin.
Fun fact, "Can you not slurp, lick and drink my masturbation bathwater please" was a very popular essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson in the 19th century and is the basis for this film adaptation. Love to see some literary regard for the American greats on this channel!
The fact I used to hate the song ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ but since this film I’ve been obsessed with it… all it took was a naked short king dancing to it for me to like it 😅😂
38:13 What makes this even more wild is the fact that was improvised. To film the scene, a limited amount of crew members were present. And according to Barry Keoghan: "On the day, I was like, 'Can I try something?' I wanted to see what the next level of obsession was. So I asked for a closed set," he said. "I wanted to see where it went. It could have gone completely wrong but I think it moved the story." "I just wanted the camera to roll," he said. "Not to kind of preempt it or rehearse it and what happened, happened. It was one take, and I think it was right."
This movie is just beautifully shot, super well acted, and utterly impossible to predict if you go in blind. This is in my top five from the last couple of years. I have my doubts about whether it will be considered a classic, but whatever. It’s fun, hilarious, shocking, and supremely well produced. I loved it, I loved it, I loved it. But was I in love with it? Well…
Exactly. Those few over-inflated youtube vids critiquing this film by discarding it as pretentious.... You describe it precisely; it's mainly a whole heap of fun!
Fun fact: Barry Keoghan marked his script Oliver #1, Oliver #2, Oliver #3 and so on earmarking & representing the different psycho Oliver's needed. Genius. Some of the shots look like paintings. Everybody thinks the maths genius is the crazy one at the beginning but it's Oliver that's the real psychopath! The trailer also misleads you and gives nothing away. The film is a masterpiece in lies, greed, envy, psychology, power, obsession, classism, revenge, deception & manipulation. This movie should win so many awards- especially for the cinematography, the soundtrack, wardrobe/costume design, the set design etc... but it won't because of how uncomfortable some of the scenes are.
The moral to the story is don’t invite Ollie or anyone named Ollie, to a funeral!!!! Y’all’s reactions were priceless!! At the beginning you said, “I feel so sorry for Oliver.” I just smirked and KNEW I had to watch your reactions. PERFECT!!
So happy to see you post a reaction to this, thank you! This film is a wild ride and I know some hated it but I had so much fun watching it. Especially with the performances! Can’t wait to see what you both thought of it!
I love that you guys were so open minded about this movie and can genuinely appreciate all the good aspects of it, you’re some of the first UA-camrs I’ve seen have a positive reaction and see the really good aspects as opposed to the bad and i love it, thank you!!!
This film is a disgusting masterpiece of cinematic art. It will make you feel like you need to take a bath in bleach and not be able to make proper eye contact with anyone for at least 48 hours. And I love it.
This has to be one of your funniest reactions ever! Really it's about the English Aristocracy and how out of touch with reality they are because they can afford to be. They believed Oliver's lies because to them he's a novelty. A charming son of a dead crackhead or whatever to parade around whilst patting themselves on the back for doing a good deed.
final twist could have been Duncan coming into focus behind Oliver at the puppet theatre with a large spade over his shoulder, hefting the the spade, screen goes to black as we hear Olivers body hit the deck! Murder on the dance floor starts up again... Duncan saw everything, the retribution would have been sweet. Plus he knew all the hiding places. I think only Duncan and Farley made it out alive! ps I think the 4 by 3 ratio made the whole thing claustrophobic
Omg so Emerald Fennell, the director, confirmed that Oliver was indeed in love with Felix. She stated, "If he'd loved him back, none of this would have ever happened."
The directors name is Emerald Fennell & she’s honestly amazing. If you haven’t already done so you guys should watch Promising Young Woman, it’s the film she did before this one & it won best original screenplay at the academy awards and was also nominated for a bunch of other categories too. That movie was the one that made me say holy shit this woman is amazing!!
it’s not that Oliver was ashamed of his family per se, but he played the game correctly to befriend Felix. The Cattons use people beneath them to feel better about themselves; Pamela, Oliver, and Farleigh (in a way). So he knew, had he not had some sob story, Felix wouldn’t give a damn about him to take him under his wing.
Oh, my friends... I have been waiting for your reaction to this. When i watched this movie, I haven't yelled at a screen so much since football season. "Ollie" is an example of how the most dangerous people operate. Bad enough Felix brought him back to his house after realizing he was a phony (Me: NO FELIX!! DON'T BRING CRAZY BACK HOME WITH YOU!) To the Dad paying him to leave. They would've been better off "planting" Ollie in that maze.
This film feels so 90's to me. The political/social commentary, the talent, inventiveness, ingenuity and artisty. The off-kilter psychological twists and the shock factor. It really feels like the kind of fantastic, indy films and TV series that came out back in the 90's when there was a real surge of creativity in the UK.
This was the best film of last year. Emerald Fennell is a genius! Her script and direction, the cinematography, the score, and Keoghan's acting all should have been awarded. But the Oscars are dumb as always. I've seen this ten times and I can't find a single fault. It's brilliant. This reaction is 100%, as I knew it would be!
Another very good movie with Barry Keoghan is The Killing Of A Sacred Deer, I recommend if you guys hvnt seen it yet.. Nikkis reaction was hilarious bc same 😂😂 the cinematography is just beautiful, so many beautiful shots
Happy belated Steven! This movie was fucking crazy! I was gagged at the reveal of Oliver staging him and Felix accidentally meeting by slashing his tire

Not since The Silence of the Lambs have I thoroughly enjoyed a movie to this extent. "Eat the Rich" vibes all the way. And the casting and acting was chefs kiss.
Getting rid of Farley saved Farley’s life. I was hoping that the twist would be that Oliver and Farley were in it together and that Oliver loved Farley, not Felix. Oh well 🤷🏽♂️ My favorite thing about movie was Nikki’s reaction 🤭🤭🤭
There’s a very interesting split in reactions to this movie between people who really thought Oliver was super, shy the beginning, and had some drastic shift after the bathtub scene and then people like myself who didn’t fully trust him from the beginning bc of all the trauma dumping. For me, by the time he makes a comment about the mom being so effing beautiful, it was obvious to me that he was a wolf in sheep clothing. It was just a matter of seeing what kind of Wolf he was, or what he was after.
SOO GOOD !!! I love your reactions!!! 3 years now! I have just seen Sofie Ellis-Bextor last weekend at Birmingham Pride (UK) and she performed this classic, crowd went wild lol
You're exactly right about the dining hall. It's the Great Hall at Oxford University (also used when filming HP). I was able to visit and walk the grounds there when my family and I attended a Rhodes Scholar's Graduation. The entrance to the school in the beginning of the movie is how you enter the grounds. It is gated off to the public and we needed to be with the graduate to go through it. The place is stunning in person. Also, I believe he missed the rock toss on purpose bc he knew his father wasnt dead.
I want to recommend the new AMC show Interview With The Vampire it's so amazing, one of the best new shows in recent years, I would love to see Nikki & Steven react to it Season 1 is only 7 episodes. Season 2 is gonna premiere on May 12th. Thank you for reading my suggestion🥰
This was probably one of the most unique, interesting, and weird movies I have ever seen. The cinematography was excellent! I had the same look that Nikki had at the end of this movie, like what the hell did I just watch. Steven's commentary about the "dick in the dirt" had me crying laughing!

Love love love this movie
Nikki's reaction starting at 21:29 sent meeeee
Very strange movie for sure, but, refreshingly different. Barry Keoghan's acting is beyond great.
This reaction was everything I hoped it would be 😂 y’all are hilarious. This was a fantastic movie. Such a trip
