I love your channel so much because it's not just covering Victorian or Rococo like a lot of other sewing channels do. It covers something completely unique and beautiful and I adore it so much!
I agree, no one else seems to talk about regional folk clothing and wearing it as part of your everyday fashion and how to sew folkwear. The historical costumers and history bounders never cover folkwear. I wish more youtubers were into folkwear. Because I wear folkwear buying vintage folkwear, and diy sewing folkwear too for my everyday clothing and Anna/prettyshepherd is the only youtuber that I found that does this.
@@Mori_Kinoko I know for us in America, we don't have historical folkware to turn to as our country is only 200 years old. British and surrounding countries has - as been stated - done to death on historic costume youtube pages. I want to see more historic costuming from the Ottoman Empire, Egypt, Russia, Albania, etc. Places not traditionally covered. UA-cam is opening up doors, though, so that is great news :D
@@WayToVibe Maybe you could make folkwear of one of your ancestral backgrounds? Like for example if your a mixture of backgrounds as an American you could choose one of or maybe try to make folkwear of multiple of your backgrounds? Also America has a bit of folkwear in the 19th century if you count prairie clothing I suppose. And it might not necessarily have to be one of your backgrounds if your really interested and are respectful of folkwear from a particular place, like for example if your interested in Hungarian embroidery on the clothing and buy a Hungarian folk blouse but don't have any Hungarian in your background but really respect and like Hungarian embroidery. But if you don't feel comfortable wearing anything that is not part of your background like you feel its disrespectful then that's ok if you wouldn't want to do anything like that.
@@Mori_Kinoko There is the issue of walking the line between appreciation and appropriation. I tend to ere on the side of caution. I did google "American folk costume" and it appears that prairie garb and cowboy clothes is the extent of "white" American folk costume. The rest belong to the Native Americans, which is a category I don't fit into. However, my mom did trace one line of our ancestry back to a boat of indentured servants that came over from Ireland, so you may be onto something there :)
@@WayToVibe I don't live in the U.S. but looks like there is a sensitive issue of appropriation in the U.S. And yes I agree that wearing Native American traditional clothes would be very inappropriate, but I don't see an issue if you are European descent to wear a blouse from Hungary even if you are not Hungarian, but then again I am not in the U.S. things are less sensitive in other countries, prettyshepherd/Anna has actually gave away a specific regional Hungarian embroidered folk scarf as a giveaway to her subscribers who are from various countries and she has sold a Hungarian blouse to her instagram followers, she also wears German dirndl wear even though she is not German, she wears dirndl aprons, dirndl skirts and dirndls mixed into her clothing if you watch her other videos or look at her instagram. I don't personally feel its a problem if its respectful and you really love it and are not mocking (but obviously avoiding Native American traditional clothing, and other specific colonized cultures traditional clothing), but maybe your new to prettyshepherd's videos and you might feel its inappropriate.
I like using vintage sheets from the thrift store to make pajamas. The top part you fold over makes an easy waistband and since the bottom edge is already hemmed it saves me a step! Pillowcases are good for cutting vests from, and ALWAYS make sure to check the curtains section for silk! I've found gorgeous long cuts of silk for less than I'd pay for a sandwich.

I made a suit out of a sheet for about the price of a cheap coffee. No one knows it's just old linens unless you tell them. Lol
@@PrettyShepherd I don't find them often, but I spend a lot of time at thrift stores so I've seen them more than once! Gotta love it when rich people redecorate their silly trophy homes 😂

the begining bit about how traditional skirts are made to tie and it doesnt mater if there is a gap or not because a apron covers it was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HELPFUL. my issue is that i hate skirts I love dresses, but i want to apply the idea to dresses>
But only flared skirt dresses (i dont put a middle seam I just use one continuous piece of fabric)
I love thrift store curtains! People buy a house and get rid of the "dated" window treatments so I sometime find many panels from the same sets. Even new drapery is expensive, but a lot of times you can tell that people spent a FORTUNE on them. I recently found several panels of fine silk (the care tags were still on from a fairly expensive store) and I can not pass up cotton velvet (even from Ikea) and brocades -especially with fringe! I got a set of olive and red cotton brocade with 3 panels and a matching bedspread, complete with fringe and no visible sun damage a few years ago!
Ah, the familiarity of the feline helper who does not actually want to let you do any work on your sewing project. 😂 And yes, velvet is one of those things that I hunt for in thrift stores, along with silk, satin, and brocades.
Nice silk brocade men’s vests can be used as appliqué for anything if you cut them out and stitch them down.
I also always buy linen anything if I find it at the thrift store.
Especially sheets. I lucked out on a cotton/linen blend king sized sheet set. Flat, fitted and pillowcase for only $25. You’d pay that by itself for one pillowcase nowadays.

I have space themed bandages that I use to keep myself from picking at sores...I'm very bad about that, and I won't keep regular bandages on long enough to stop myself, so space themed ones work...and I'm 45 :)

I like to find sweaters in thrift shops and unravel them, most of the time the yarn is what catches my attention but the style might not be to my liking so I just use the yarn again. Plus it's much cheaper to buy a sweater-quantity of yarn already as a sweater than in a skein.
My favorite thrift item is linen sheets. Much cheaper than brand new linen when you are making shifts or chemises. Apparently it was a major traditional item for wedding trousseau or dowry chests in the past in Italy and there is always some in every second hand shop. Either that or hand woven hemp sheets. In the mountains in Piedmont in a region known as Canavese (from the local name for canabis) girls often were given a long thin (2 meters) strip of land so that each could grow the hemp for her own dowry items such as night gowns, hand towels, work shirts, and sheets. She would often pass it to the town weaver and sometimes even another spinner but she would then get the fabric back to sew. It’s a pretty tough and somewhat rough fabric but great for folkloric applications.
I love the pretty bandages, too. I've been wearing them for years.

Yes! I love going on sale days at the thrift store and collecting all types of garments to use for applique. Velvet is one of my favorites too, I also love finding leather, hemp, and silks. I like to check curtains, tablecloths, dresses, coats...all the larger items so there is lots of scrap to work with. Old linens are great for testing patterns or as a backing for applique pieces! so many possibilities
Flat sheets as curtains. You just undo or cut the seam at the top hem and slide it on the curtain rod. You have lovely long curtains in whatever color/print and super cheap or free (mine came from my aunt 😁)
Cats do not *help*, they *supervise*. 😺
The funny thing about being on the radar of the folk police is that in 200 years your breaks from convention might very well be the "traditonal folk costume inspiration" !!! Heehee 😁
I too grab black velvet skirts to make into cushions then stitch tapestry embroideries onto one side using braid to cover the canvass edges. Way back when mini skirts were reaching charity shops in the mid 70s and I had just returned from 3 years in California to wintery Wales i bought several in tweed for allmost instant cushions. Also usefull sewn in stripes onto canvass padded with sheep wool from fences to lay on cold slate floors
Lately I have been seeking out corduroy items from the thrift store, to either wear if I like and fit them, or reshape if I find the right kind. I recently found a forest green corduroy skirt in a very straight cut that Is going to be the perfect size to remake into a waistcoat.
I absolutely love the bandages! I like to keep fun ones in the medicine cabinet but I buy the "adult" ones for my husband 😅
Thrifted leather sofa or leather pants as leather lining for costume armour is something we do at the armour shop...

Beautiful Video Anna! You really do the most lovely work, and I really enjoy the cheerful folk music playing as you sew, it really emphasises how excited you are about your project.
As for Thrift store habits, I always look for jewellery I can pull apart to use as embellishments on garment, or combine to make nicer/more "me" jewellery. And then bedding/tablecloths are super useful for regency gowns, because they come pre-hemmed, which saves me a step (I know you could use them for other gowns, skirts etc, it just so happens I've ended up using them almost exclusively for Regency gowns 😅)
I also use Hello Kitty and Disney's Bambi bandaids XD

Montgomery and Fitz insist on being part of all of my projects and prefer the basket of clean laundry to the dirty clothes.
Thus far my thrifted fabric has been cotton bedding (sheets / pillow cases).
Will now be looking at more sections of thrift stores for velvet, silks, etc based on comments here.

I had a very big squeek when I saw your moomin bandaid! Don't know how widely those are sold outside Finland so it was suprise. 😍🤩 I think I'm too practical for kids bandaids because those come in one size. I like to buy the type which comes this half meter strip where you can cut bandaid in the size you need.
I love those little facts you have in your videos of history of folk costumes. Haven't heard that in Finland you would weave metal strings in your fabric to keep evil away and show your wealth but I can think many other elements which speak this similar believes. The nerd in me gets so happy from these little facts. 🥰
I like to keep an eye out for the right suede and leather garments at thrift stores to decontruct and make roman style sandals

I'm collecting Liberty (Of London) shirts from the brand Mary-Kimberley (it's very "mom/grandma" vibe), mostly in XL or XXL juste for the fabric. It's around 2€ to 5€ the shirt on Vinted or Ebay. What's the point you're asking me ? One day, it will be a giant quilted patchwork bed cover !

Yep, I've gone to a purple high school sport's team shirt from a second hand store to use for something else. When I got home I cut off the sleeves, and turned the shirt inside out to make a skirt. I needed it for a school cosplay thing that week. It was perfect (save for it being kinda small lol)

I like cotton sheets, linen tablecloths and some curtains for sewing. I will grab a tablecloth in a heartbeat.
I once made a choli (blouse for saree) out of a second hand gown. I was desperately searching for a nice shiny fabric at an affordable price, and the dress was way cheaper. I even used the pettycoat part for an other project.

I have two cats and they are very involved in every stage of sewing....Well tailoring, cutting the fabric, ironing....paw s everywhere 😁
I thrift sweaters made of 100% cotton yarn and unravel them to use in crochet projects. This has become my #1 source of yarn. I hardly ever buy it new now. It makes my projects feel even more special because I found a “treasure” to make it with, and when it’s gone, it’s gone, which makes it feel very precious!

Budget friendly tip as requested: I volunteer for a local charity and each time we sort trough donated clothing we throw out stuff that is torn or otherwise damaged that is not repairable. People often ,,donate" literal waste. So after something goes to the waste pile, I clip off buttons and keep them. Maybe ask in a local charity shop if you could do the same?
I look out for heavy silks, silk velvet, linen and silk cotton. And vintage handmade lace

Hi. Your channel was recommended to me and I'm so glad I watched. I have been sewing for a long time and also I do Leatherwork occasionally. It all depends on what I'm working on, from Ren fest items to costumes for exotic Dancers. I absolutely love thrift stores and have found unbelievable items that I chose to wear for myself. But one of the things I am always looking out for is items with rhinestones. The good ones in any form from chain to large appliques. Because when I do costumes for exotics I tend to go the glitzy and rhinestones are so crazy expensive! I also look for 4 way stretch materials and good velvet same like you. So happy I found your channel!

Very fine details on that thrift flip. And Oh those cats remind me of cats I had to give up when I moved in 2017. My tabby is an 8lb pussycat named Elbereth and my black cat is a 12lb tom named Moriel... they live in the same 26 foot Trailer that they have always lived in but It is now on my friend's property. I moved from Christmas Valley OR USA but they stayed in their home town.

I thrift all my clothing (except my “undies”). I’m always watching for an item made of quality leather or real animal fur. These are useful in making cosplay or ren faire garb.
I gather big old men t-shirt to make toiles for knickers and underwears
If only I could sew..... Sadly I cannot. But if I could sew, then I would seek out vintage lace appliques or ornate accents.

What I don't get is why you didn't use the opportunity of adding a velvet band at the bottom of the skirt to make it longer by it ?!

Interesting channel ypu have, subscribed. I just need to specify something: it is a Hungarian Transilvanian costume and the language in the song you played at some point is Hungarian. I think it is important, as Transylvania is part of Romania, the majority of the population is Romanian, Hunagrians are a minority. Speaking of which, maybe you can also try Romanian and Saxon costumes, too. Saxons of Transylvania. As for Romanian garments, I think the most beautiful ones are in Maramures, Moldova and Dobrogea. Just for inspiration! You did a great job there, congrats.

Furnishing fabric can be handy. I scored some in cherry I fancy as a bodice. A skirt in tartan and I will be able make an outfit, not authentic but " history bounding ".
