The Underdog of V8 Engines Built Cheap and Easy(Feat:

  • A few months ago we featured our friend for many years, Nick(‪@nickthevanman9011‬), who saw us go to the No Name Nationals last year and wants to make it out there this year.
For the #nonamenationals, Nick is building a #chevrolet 305 V8 to stick in his van. Now before you go discounting the plucky V8, consider that this engine was built cheap, reliable, and with just enough power to make this thing a real competive bracket #racer.
Go subscribe to Nick. We want all our friends to have fun with us. If you're considering going, it's not too late!

Ah yes the dynamic comp ratio that nobody talks about. This is how you can run a high compression motor with a big cam but still be streetable.

I run a 305 from a 77 Nova that a tree fell on the roof. 76K original miles. No ridge. I put some swirly port mid 80's heads 58cc, ported the crap out of the head and thinned the ramps as much as a felt comfortable doing. Ebay special SS roller rockers and Edelbrock performer plus camshaft. I later gave it a TPI from EBAY and Obama era cash for clunkers parts. 500 lift z28 springs and run it in front of a junk yard 2004R in my 83 Firebird that was originally a v6 that barely could get out of it's own way. I love combo. It gets going right away. Purely a junkyard build and been running now for over 10 years.

That's actually probably a stout little 305. The performer plus cam is a great grind

4:27 Let's take a moment of silence for the Hot Rod magazine readers of the 80's buying these intakes.
Friend of mine bought a black market 2 4bbl intake not for drugs of course. But anyways put it on his factory 1977 350 in his Camaro.
I shit you not the entire time we "test drove it" he just kept on saying; "This thing will be bitchin when I get the flooding issue under control......"

I had the L69 305 in my 1984 Z28 with the Quadrajet. New fresh out of high school. Back in the day it was fast. Only the 5.0 Mustangs were a challenge. Had many many fun miles until i broke a piston at 80,000 miles on I-10 at 110 MPH. Put a budget long block 350 stock in it drove it a few more years then sold it.

    • @nickthevanman9011
      @nickthevanman9011 Рік тому +2

They run pretty good in a lighter car, the horsepower and torque peak is higher up on the L69, so with the gear ratio a Z28 has I'm sure it's in the meat of the curve alot. I too had a 84 but it was a Berlinetta with a lg4, not a bad running car honestly.

I was friends with 2 brothers when we were all teens. Both had a Camaro. One was a 1982 and the other was a 1979 model. The 82 had a 305 and the 79 had a 307. Both engines were build and both cars low geared.
Nobody around could outrun those 2 boys at our local track.

@@nickthevanman9011 307s are evil, wicked little motors if you crack that code.. I'm not privy to the specs off the top of my head but I recall a Camaro back in the day with a high HP 307 that was downright hateful.
Again, I don't remember the specs but I do recall something about it having long connecting rods and 600cfm. Do not underestimate 302, 305, 307s etc..

It’s the same crank, with a small balancing difference.
What you’re thinking of is the 400 crankshaft which should give a 334ci engine.

A $200 4.8 or 5.3 is cool, until you buy the harness, Holley EFI, swap mounts, and have it tuned. Then you have $3000 in a engine with 280,000 miles on it that leaks oil, has low oil pressure and sounds like a wore out Silverado. If I do an Ls swap, I want to start with a 6.0, and completely build it. Totally fresh, big cam, head work, Holley hi ram, headers....like done nice. I also wouldn't mind a 454 cubic inch lsx.
