- This is what it's all about when you are a whitetail fanatic and a food plot/land management fanatic! We just moved to our new 575 Acre Southern Missouri Ozark's Mountain property a month or so ago and I've been prepping our Ozark Mountain ridge tops since Day 1 here in preparation for our fall food plots. Which brings us to today's Missouri Ozark's property fall plot number 1 adventure! In today's episode I will show you every single step that I take and how I layer my fall food plots by layering and planting the large grain seeds & fertilizer first (think winter wheat, oats, winter rye and triticale) and then cover the large seed and fertilizer to maximize the seed to soil contact for the large seeds and allow the fertilizer to be covered with moist dirt and start to break down and leech into the soil. Then I will run my Delta S3 heavy drag harrow over the large seed & fertilizer. After that I will broadcast all of the small seeds (think brassica's, turnips, sugar beets, clover, chicory, and more..) and then I will do a final pass by cultipacking the small seeds so as to push them down into the moist soil for good seed to soil contact, especially when the soil is moist. And then we'll get several after looks and an up to the minute 'after' look after a couple of weeks and getting some rain on the new fall food plot for deer on our Missouri Ozark's farm! The new house plot is looking good!
That ground tilled up better than I expected, considering it has been a hay field.
Yeah with all the moisture things are looking decent! For now at least! Got some really good germination on several new plots and cool weather this week!
Its coming along Kap 👀👀
Yessir! One mission at a time!! Thank you!
I remember you having a hot tub blind at the old house. Any thought to putting one of those in?
lol for sure!! I will be getting a hot tub here, but the way the yard lays out I might not have a good view of the house plot since the back yard elevation is lower!! But I will do my best to make it work!! Can't beat that!
I love watching this🎉
thank you and thanks for joining me! This stuff can be really interesting! Especially when you start getting a bunch of wildlife in them plots! Stay tuned thanks!
How good does it feel to be able to rifle hunt again? FREEDOM!
AWESOME!!! No more Rules for THEE but not for me!! I can breath the FREE air again!! Booyah!! thanks brother
Looking good Kapper!!!
Thanks man! Can't believe we are into dove season already!! Best of luck with your plots in IL!! Hey, I heard Pritzger was going to start taxing food plots soon!! ?? :0
Nice food plot
It is doing pretty well so far thank you! Fingers crossed my hard work will pay off. Been planting one new one a day over the last week and a half.
Excellent job ! Do you transition to hunting content in the fall ?
Thank you! Well, long story, but I think any hunting will be over at Kapper Outdoors 1.0. Since the YT algorithms don't like certain things I'll probably do it over on our main channel. Thanks
Thank u for sharing.. hope all is well sir .. Semper Fi
Thanks buddy! SF! Hope all is well. Crazy times right now!
Good effort there 👍 don't know how much your paying for the chemical to try and kill the grass but could perhaps be cheaper to plough it in that tractor you have would be able to pull a 4 bottom plough, we ploughed with 4 furrows and only 60 hp 2wd back in the day 🤔👍
Well that is kind of what I am doing with the chisel disc, only on the fall food plots. Lots of options for sure but limited equipment size and implements for 50 acres of fields.
Sorry Mr K I thought you had bought a plough at one time 🤔👍
You have that down to science it seems. How does that soil compare to the southern IL farm? More clay or less?
This dirt is better than So IL. More rocks, but overall the quality is better, much less clay and more nutrients!
How much does it cost per acre to do this? I'm new to this. I also live out of state from my property for the next couple of years. I'm thinking it may be impossible to do this myself and only make it out there a couple of times a year.
Well creating good plots takes a lot of work. You might try to hire someone in the meantime until you get to your property. But even then, there are no guarantees as mother nature plays such a huge role in things. Best of luck!
The most important thing you can do is a soil test. If you are putting on the wrong formulation of fertilizer, you're accomplishing nothing.
Well I do respectfully disagree. A soil test is great, and gives you guidance I agree with that. But if you don't get a good ki ll down, and you don't get good seed to soil contact, and you don't get good timing on rain and moisture, then none of the soil amendments will matter, not one bit. So I take more of a realist approach and do my best to get those other steps as 'right' as possible. If you add too much fertilizer (which I seldom do) it won't hurt much. But them other 3 items I just liste IMO are far more important. Thanks
