Band-Maid songs are actually highly-structured and meticulously crafted. They are complex and dense tho, so the structure may elude you for the first few listens (many Band-Maid songs need multiple listens to truly appreciate the artistry). Thank you for reacting. :)

requires a listener who can get past the "speed/volume". It's why we hear people call Heavy Metal (which this isn't remotely) noise. Too many people don't attempt to really hear what's going on.

Keep in mind when a group writes a song for a anime opening they are obligated to write a song that reflects the anime not only in lyrics but in style as well and can often not reflect their own style.

Kobato is a huge fan of the original manga (she is a total manga freak) and so she was not only able to immerse instantly, her lyrics, as usual, not only fitted the music however complex, fitted perfectly within saiki's vocal style and capacity, they were also laced with key phrases from the work itself.

    From JAPAN
Sense is the theme song of the Japanese anime "Platinum End".
Platinum End is a new work by the Death Note writer, and 24 episodes of the anime are scheduled to air.
There are two more new songs on their UA-cam channel Sense CD.
HIBANA:spark full speed hard rock, Corallium hip pop style dancing hard rock.
The three new songs are all different and all good, all like BAND MAID.
They are constantly evolving with new challenges. Please listen.

Was never much of a rock/metal fan (except a brief phase of Guns N Roses etc and Grunge in late 80s/early 90s) and the odd song by others since then. And then I discovered BAND-MAID. Every single day since then (roughly 18 months now), I've listened to at least a song or two by them. No other band has 'grabbed' my attention and held onto it as firmly in over 40+ years of actually listening to music. On a first listen, there is a LOT going on in most of the self-penned songs by this band - and it can take a few listens for your ears and brain to catch up. Their newest album - "Unseen World" has a lot of fast-paced songs in a broadly similar vein to 'Sense' and although I liked it on first listen I didn't quite 'get' it completely. Two or three listens later, and I 'got' it. It's easy to say 'it's not my sort of thing' and only listen once - as many folk tend to do, these days - if they actually even listen to more than a few bars. If you're open-minded enough then it can be worth giving a song/band a few chances to let your ears and brain catch up. The Icelandic band Sigur Ros never made sense to me (despite giving them a few tries), until they were the soundtrack to a car journey around some of the Perthshire countryside up here in Scotland on a wet day. Then suddenly they made sense and I became a fan. Try the song a few times, in different scenarios/settings, it may or may not change your initial opinion....

Too catchy for metal fans, too heavy for pop fans, too chaotic for fans of standard rock music. I completely understand and respect your criticism but I hope Band-Maid isn't listening. I haven't been this excited about a band's evolution for a very long time.
Band-Maid has a back catalogue of dozens upon dozens of less-hectic songs. You've already done a few like "Dice" and "Freedom" etc. If you're interested in that side of the band I whole-heartedly recommend "Bubble", "Choose Me", "YOLO", "Don't You Tell ME" and "Alone". "onset" is a great instrumental. For a softer side, there's "Daydreaming", "Endless Story", and "Wonderland". I would suggest you stay away from "Different" though because that's another hectic song.

This song is a frontal assault without considering casualties... and an absolute masterpiece of songwriting. You should listen to the song ten times to figure out what is happening, and that´s appropiate because this is the opening song to the anime Platinum End. So that recognizable main riff, chapter by chapter, will be stucked in the mind of their followers by their entire life. Oh, and this is not their heavier song by a long shot...

  • @crystalbowie1212

Thank you for reacting to the BAND-MAID song.
This song "SENSE" was written and composed by BAND-MAID as the theme song of the anime "Platinum End".
"Platinum End" is a story that when a god changes, 12 god candidates are selected as angels and fight, and the last one left is the god.
The 12 god candidates fight with wings that can fly faster than light, a red arrow that grabs the heart, and a white arrow that destroys everything.
The wings that appear in the "SENSE" Music Video are conscious of the wings of the god candidate, and the spotlight represents the arrow of the god candidate.
If you listen again with such background knowledge, you can understand the goodness of this song further with the playing technique of BAND-MAID.

The opening was at the request of the anime, Platinum Edge, which this song is made for. So much going on, Band Maid always put so many layers into their songs, it takes a few listens to get all of it, and even after many, many listens, I still hear new things after 50 or 60 times! This is paced for the anime, similar to "Different", which was also made for an anime opening.

Some metal heads reactors said it's too poppy for their taste😂 I'd say it's not too heavy (just the right dose of heaviness), but it's fast-paced proggy, something like Rush on steroids squeezed into 3 and half minutes time-frame.

Another thing is a total ignorance about punk-rock. Just a quote from Wiki: "..short, fast-paced songs with hard-edged melodies and singing styles, stripped-down instrumentation, and often shouted political, anti-establishment lyrics." Punk-rock is a rough music of rebellion against establishment, elitism and academism (in music). IMHO Band-maid doesn't fill the punk-rock bill: their music is way too sophisticated for that. B-M lyrics also doesn't follow the typical punk-rock messages. Calling their music a punk-rock is like an oxymoron.

Yesterday I watched a very young, poor, Nigerian reaction, his first contact with them. His musical mind, culturally tuned to rhythmic complexity read it like a comic book.
Another guy from Africa, screeched to a halt at a nice/nasty little drum fill from Akane which makes pretty much everyone else do a WTF face and listens to it three or four times and goes "há dubstep" and carries on satisfied.
Western popular music has dulled the senses. It can either be fast but very repetitive and simple, or if complex, very slow.
This is an anime theme and so it's going to be heard a few times so the details will emerge.
I also saw a young morrocan girl who reacts in Arabic and you could see that it just went straight in and refreshed her entirely.
What the mainstream (pretending not to be) Anglo Saxon music scene take for gourmet musical fare is chicken nuggets to people outside the bubble, especially the young and the very old accostomed to jazz.

Guys, I love all Band-Maid. How about a power ballad? Try the MV Daydreaming if you like giving out a "10". What's cool about Band-Maid is for some of their songs you need good headphones and then listen several times to each member separately. When you notice what MISA, Kanami and Akane are doing you will appreciate them even more. Peace.

I have one for you that is a different genre of Japanese music than you have reacted to. This one is Japanese electronic dance music. EDM isn't usually my thing, but this artist is particularly innovative.
The artist is named Reol. The music video is named "YoiYoi Kokon". It can be found on the Reol Official channel. The music video version should have an [MV] in front. (album version does not) 45 Million views. English subtitles are provided by the artist on this video. (There is an option for the artist to provide translations on UA-cam)
    Music,Lyrics&Vocal : Reol
    Music,Arranged : Giga
    Movie : Okiku
Reol and Giga are prolific writers with large catalogs of their own and music written for other artists. Their catalog is a bit like a fancy box of chocolates. Something new and different every time. They are big in Japan, but not all that well known outside.

OK, that's very interesting as we did a catch-up show where we spin a wheel for music styles and ask for suggestions and this week it feel on EDM.
      And here you are!!, brilliant.
OK, I will add that to the list and see where we end up.
Thanks for popping in and all the suggestions, we appreciate it.

Another great reaction fellas. Telling it exactly as you both see it. This one is an assault on the senses for sure. They've got talent in spades, but I much prefer their more melodic sounding tracks. They've got something for everyone from all that I have heard from them to date. :)

Exactly what Drogon R said below. They take time to really understand and warm up to. I had to be led in a specific path of songs to really "get" them. But it was well worth the time invested. Their material is supremely complex and diverse, but once you have the underlying patterns you'll find its like a light turning on. Their musicianship is absolutely top 5 world class. Misa is, in my opinion, quite possibly the best bassist on the planet. Actually all of these young women are probably top 5 or so.
Try Real Existence or Take me Higher, those were two that made it a bit easier for me to really get into their groove.

Top 5? Not even close. No offense, but Miku alone stops them from being in the top 5. And I respect how far she has come. There is some extremely strong competition in Japan alone. Let alone the rest of the world. But I don't even see why it is always so important for some fans to insist on their skills. They work really well as a band and that is what matters. No need to constantly hype them up.

I think I wrote it on another of your Band Maid reactions, but you should check out the 2-song yt live clip for "Manners" and "Black Hole". It showcases their "range", and I'm quite certain you will like the first one at least. Kim would give you the link, but I'm typing this on my phone. @@BritPopsReact oh ... didn't realize you had seen Manners yet. Black Hole is not completely unlike "Sense", in that it feels like sensory overload at first. It took me a couple of listens to start to really appreciate the song and now it's one of my favourites.
I guess the best way to "prepare" yourself is to picture a literal astronomical black- hole, but rendered musically instead of visually.
Also, if you decide to check the song out, the live version is (As always with Band Maid) better than the MV, and it has subtitles (like all newer releases from the band). Here is the corresponding official clip, fastforwarded to the correct time ( ua-cam.com/video/iaf94nNSRGE/v-deo.html )

Luckily for you most of Band-Maid's older videos are not quite this frantic and I think you'll get a kick of out it. @@faithreasons3041 I'm 55 and my tastes have traditionally been classic rock as well. Manners, Bubble, Dragon Cries definitely have that classic rock bluesy feel. My introduction to them was Play and I thought...I hadn't heard a sound like that in a long time. It hearkened back to the rock of yesteryear but sounds updated. Play and Freedom Live really show off their fun personality but aren't too hard. They also have rock ballads like Daydreaming, Endless Story, About Us. Anyway they are worth a few listens and if they still don't resonate then you haven't lost anything except a few minutes of time.
