Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope is a musical revue with music, lyrics and book by Micki Grant. It was originally produced by Edward Padula.
The all-singing, all-dancing show focuses on the African-American experience with songs on such topics as tenements, slumlords, ghetto life, student protests, black power, and feminism. The music is a mixture of gospel, jazz, funk, soul, calypso, and soft rock.
The show had its first staging at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. in 1971, with subsequent stagings at the Locust and Walnut Street Theatres in Philadelphia. The Broadway production, directed by Vinnette Carroll and choreographed by George Faison, opened on April 19, 1972 at the Playhouse Theatre, where it ran for two months before transferring to the Edison. It had a total run of 1065 performances. The cast included Grant, Alex Bradford, Hope Clarke, and Arnold Wilkerson. It was the first Broadway play to be directed by an African-American woman. Time Magazine theatre critic T. E. Kalem praised the show, writing: "This is the kind of show at which you want to blow kisses." The Los Angeles production featured Paula Kelly.
An original cast recording was released on the Polydor label, produced by Jerry Ragovoy.

My Dad is playing the drums on this, he played the broadway show for years
This was the first musical I ever saw in person. I was 9, and it changed my existence
RIP Micki Grant (1941-2021), she was a dazzling songwriter.
Thank you for sharing this! "Cope" was the first live musical I ever saw, at about 8 years old. My parents took me. The soundtrack LP was played a million times in my home for YEARS afterwards. We wore out the grooves on the record. I thought it was lost long ago. Now I'm listening and remembering every word, every note. I am only now realizing this play had so much influence on the rest of my life.

My kindred sisters! 💞 How strange? My mother took me to this play when I was 8 or 9. She instantly connected with it and bought the album directly following the performance. To this day I can sing (for lack of a better word) 90% of the lyrics. And as someone else wrote, this play is timeless!

"Cope" is as relevant today as it was the day it premiered! Perhaps the first musical I ever saw (touring company, Coconut Grove, Florida @1973... my first year at UMiami.) I fell in love with it immediately. Yes, I have my original vinyl LP, AND my printed program! But thank you for uploading it... it's so much easier to share this way!

My mom has this album, still, to this day. She used to play it when she was in school at Howard in the 70s, and then all through my youth. Now I play it for my nephew and niece. Great music! Well-written lyrics. And a snapshot of the times. I always remember Howard when I hear this song...I was 5 and she used to drag me to school with her...have her school mates watch me in the study room while she was in class. Big up HU!
The first musical I ever saw .. on a school trip to Washington DC at the Booth Theater where Lincoln was shot! In 1973 I think.

My mother performed “All I Need” here in the 70’s Anchorage Alaska production of “Don’t Bother Me I Can’t Cope”. I am so glad that I found this on UA-cam. As a child, my bro’s, sis, I chewed up the only cassette tape of the Original production that we had..We Loved It That Much As Kids!🥰

I have never gotten enough of this musical. I saw it on Broadway, and still have the original LP album that I cherish. I am listening to it here and surprised that I still remember every word to every song.
I met Alex Bradford when he came to Fort Lauderdale with a friend of mine and hung out with them. Vinette Carroll also opened a theatre here and conducted a version of “Cope.”

Does it exist on film? The soundtrack was released with the original cast. I’ve never seen footage outside of the tv commercials.
