  • Welcome to my thrilling journey to the awe-inspiring Mount Yasur Volcano on Tanna Island, Vanuatu!
This active stratovolcano has been captivating visitors for centuries, and its fiery displays date back over 800 years. On average, it erupts multiple times a day, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of spewing lava and booming explosions.
FYI, Mount Yasur Volcano has been an active volcano for more than 800 years. Up to 500 eruptions daily mean more than 20 times each hour - day and night.
For a safe and unforgettable visit, we must pay close attention to the alert level. Visiting during low-level eruptions (Level 2) allows us to witness the volcano's fiery beauty up close, and experienced guides ensure a secure experience. However, higher eruption levels might make it unsuitable for a visit due to increased risks.
Prepare to be humbled by the raw power of nature as you venture to Mount Yasur. This is an unparalleled, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to behold the primal forces that shape our planet. Join me in this breathtaking adventure of a lifetime!

In short, it's not cheap but it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Visiting Mount Yasur was our main objective in visiting Vanuatu.
    -------------------------
You may also take small flights and do a day tour, but I don't like those tours because they leave the volcano before sunset. I'd like to experience the place when the surrounding is truly dark. For your reference:

Memories, memories. I visited and climbed Yasur solo in 1976 when I lived in the then New Hebrides. There were no waymarks or guides, just a faint track to the top used by the locals. Yasur wasn't as active then but there were fumaroles on its flanks and ominous continuous rumblings. There used to be a large lake called Siwi in the ash plain but after heavy rain one year it broke its banks and drained into the sea carving a huge gorge as it went. The road from Lenakel was a bit more primitive then, with no surfacing, just an earth track which was a bit hairy on some of the bends, ascents and descents. The airport in those days was a roller coaster of a grass strip cut out of the bush at Lenakel and the aircraft used was either a twin engined, 9 passenger Britten Norman Islander or a three engined , 17 passenger Trislander. Thanks for the reminder.

Hi Tim, thanks for sharing with us how Yasur and Tanna were back in 1976. You must be someone very adventurous! Yeah we saw some formations near the volcano which the driver said used to be filled with water in the past - perhaps the Lake Siwi you mentioned? We used to be on extremely rough "roads" but after this drive to Mt Yasur, it easily moved up to the top 3 of our "list of rough journey" :)

Can you tell me how hard it is to get back down at night, need large torches?
