JS-2 Build With EXTREME Cast Steel Textures! (Tamiya 1/35)

- My friends, tonight we're doing a full build & detailed tutorial at the same time! We'll take a very close look at how to simulate super rough cast steel textures on Soviet heavy tanks, everything based on actual reference photos.
This Tamiya kit was upgraded with metal tracks from Friulmodel, Aber barrel and photo-etch, Alpine and Panzer Art figures, and some stowage from Plusmodel and Legend Productions.
Special thanks goes to Matt Flegal for providing the reference photos!

"I'm not a professional or an artist." Could have fooled me. You're one of the best scale modelers on youtube.
Yes but unlike others he remains simple and humble that's all the difference for me
He is the best on UA-cam!
Im watching scale modeling UA-camrs for over 10 years now and in guite positive that he is THE BEST over here. Even in top scale modeling shows you cannot see much better models than Night shift is making
Well, being a normal humble guy who just does his thing pays off, it would seem.
Amen
The evolution of NightShift:
2020: MORE TEXTURED EARTH!!!
2021: MORE STYROFOAM!!!
2022: MORE CAST TEXTURES!!!
Sangat inofatip anda memberikan ilmu tambahan intuk model skala yang sempurna seperti aslinya.
2024 “More modelling space”
I'm a professional ironworker.
You freaking *nailed* the foundry textures of steel, especially flame cuts.
Great job man.
For those wondering, the tank that’s being used as a reference is the IS2 in the American heritage museum in Stow MA, USA fantastic museum with dozens of fully restored tanks.
cool next time i go to the US i will visit.
These old soviet tanks are so cool with their gnarly texture and I've wanted you to do one for a long time!
The Edward James Olmos of tanks.
@@l1zrdking Now that's funny right there!
Tamiya kits by themselves are pretty impressive
Back at it with the Soviet Heavies!!!! I love these old Soviet tanks, Night Shift! Can't wait for thd next update!
Makes me wonder if he’ll ever do soviet aircraft.
@@FalloutProto I don't think he's ever done or will build a plane
Very nice model, I use the cement, and stiff brush techniques, but I also use Mr. Surfacer 500. Having worked in a steel mill when I was younger and seeing the castings on those soviet tanks, that "crap" would never pass in the states. We made the armor for the M-88 ARV. We also made seamless pipe that was used in Submarines.
I have been to that museum in Massachusetts, and I can confirm the IS-2 and T-35-85 both have some crazy textures! You packed a tremendous amount of detail into those surfaces, I am very excited to see what the paint looks like!
Just as I think my tanks are starting to get decent you set the bar even higher.
We love is 2 Night Shift
And another iconic project, I much, much appreciate! I love this soviet large-caliber "tigerkiller" tank. Great choice!!!
Great job on the armor textures. Looks amazing. A little insight to the tank in your reference photos. I live not far from the museum where that IS2 is located. Prior to coming to the US that tank was used as a range target in the Netherlands. Which would explain most of the really deep pits and gouges. The damage was filled in for display at the museum. Keep up the good work Martin.
Fantastic casting detail, Uncle you really breathe life into your models. Your site is my favourite and I steal alot of your ideas and techniques for my own tanks. Thanks from the UK.
the casting was propably done in a high temperature, then cooling it fast makes the steel crack, I think that's why they welded the cracks up
nope. Cracks are bad things, can't have them. Thats shrinkage. Steel doesn't flow at all like iron. Steel is usually forged, casting is a really limited process.
This dude is hands-down, the best scale modeler I have seen thus far. Really taking modeling into the realm of actual Fine Art, it seems. At least, that's my opinion. But, all-around- Great vids - And after a long afternoon at work, it's the right kind of relaxation I need.
YES! I just unlocked this thing in War Thunder a couple days ago and it's really fun to play, was so disappointed that there wasn't a quality video of someone building a 1/35 scale model of this tank, that's now changed! Thank you Martin!
"I'm not a professional or an artist." No Martin, you are a professional and an artist, in my opinion probably the best on UA-cam. You do your thing in a way that makes modelling and sculpting look easy, and from what I've seen, you don't make a rockstar/movie star/know-it-all celebrity of yourself, like many other modellers, and especially miniature figure painters do. Dude, it's a pleasure watching you work and having the material to try out some techniques for myself.
Its not friday until uncle nightshift hits me with his lovley "maah friends"
The level of detail in the weld beads and texturing - amazing! 😳 No way I'm spending that much time on these kinds of details so, living vicariously through you, lol!
Holy shit, that picture at 13:17 is crazy. It's like the tank is made from clay!
Cast texture on tanks are the equivalent of riveting aircraft models. More creative and you have more freedom with cast textures, unlike rivets where they have to be precise and according to blueprints. Wonderful work on the cast textures, the best ones i have seen.
Ahhhh yeaaah, absolutely stunning mate! 😎
Beautiful model and excellent detailing. Can't wait to see how this one progresses!
This is seriously one of my fav builds that youve done, between the super interesting texturing and the stowage with such... well, personality. Dunno, I just love it so much that I cant wait to see the progress.
The texturing looks really nice, Tamiya IS-2 is one of the best plastic kit on the market. One mark regrding the tracks. The one you got from an old model is a postwar type of IS tracks. For a wartime vehicle you should use the type you got as plsatic in the kit AFAIK. Friulmodel do the job as ATL-54.
Seconded! All tracks on IS-2s were 650mm wide, and you can choose from 3 different types. Firul ATL-54 would be an early type, with a split link without guide tooth on every second link. These were gradually replaced with ones with a guide tooth on every link, so near the end of the war this was the most common type (ATL-14). But then there's a 3rd type, also with a guide tooth on every link, which also can be seen on some late war photographs. AFAIK, this set is only available from MasterClub (35199), but good luck finding these due to the current political situation.
The time and effort to make the tank even cooler and add so much details is remarkable as usual... can't wait for the paint video....
Awesome work Martin thank you for bringing us a tutorial on how to do Soviet cast textures. Can’t wait to add these techniques to my is-2 it’s the same kit you are currently working on. You have also encouraged me to make my models look extreme. As always thank you for being a big motivation for me.
Looks fantastic already, IS-2 is such a beast. Wonderful job, greetings!!!!
I always anticipate the building of Soviet tanks made by you! CANNOT to wait for the painting stage.
I just built this tank and was my best yet, then i see yours and the details you made blew me away, youre a real inspiration and have a long way to go to be as great as you but will keep trying, cant wait for the final result...
best thing to wake up to on Saturday morning
You are not only talented in modeling but in explanations all along the process. 👌
Superb, thanks for uploading!
Loved the video Martin, the cast effects were brilliant! Can’t wait for the next video ☺️👍
I much prefer these videos than any modeling book I have. Even unpainted your models are awesome!
Incredible. Your channel is a huge motivation to get back to modeling.
I bought a 1/35 Tamiya Panzer IV Ausf D and your videos have inspired me to do my first 1/35 model. I work with small kits only, so this will be a real challenge for me.
A work of art,congratulations.
Thanks for the great video Uncle Nightshift! Very excited for this build!
Night Shift is building my favourite tank of all times with the same figure I built it with when I started building models like 4 years ago? Here comes the journey of self-loathing...
Outstanding build, video and presentation.
Love your work. I watch the channel every Friday. Keep up the good work 🫡
The textures are so realistic! Great job as always 👏
My compliments to you sir! I recently built this model. I definitely understated the texture in all areas of my tank as compared to yours and the reference photos you showed. I used Mr. Surfacer 500 to simulate texture, but totally missed on the flame cuts and those horizontal lines in the hull & turret. I look very forward to seeing this painted and of course the diorama you have planned. Outstanding!! 👍
And here we see a master at work
damn this is extraordinary work! you never fail to deliver top notch models!
I'm learning a lot from your videos. excellent work. thank you
Glorious work with casting texture replication, also adorable details, keep it up comrade!
I've made the ZVEZDA IS-2 and i really enjoyed the process of building the whole model. I am not surprised that tamiya made this model that good. Greetings from Bulgaria 🇧🇬
wow that is incredible mate, you're such an inspiration
Great video full of excellent, clear advice! Looking forward to the next step on this build!
Staggeringly good work. Inspirational as ever. I've never used the glue/stupple method but I will now! Great unfussy tutorial. Looking forward to the paint vid!
Building my 1st tank now thanks to your influence... thank you 😊
Nice one Martin wanted this kit for ages welljell.
Your 2 part texture technique is next level good. 😎 I so enjoy your videos with great info.
Beautiful work! Can’t wait to see the finished model!👍
So nice end result my friend. Your work Is perfect as usual. The tamiya kit change completely the view.
Always enjoy your artistic touch .
as usual, amazing work there, always so good to sip a coffe and watch your build series.
Really love your vids man. I seem to have gotten out of a 5 year depression with the idea of doing my first scale model inspired from yours and a few other UA-camrs. Keep it up
You're awesome and there's more clarity on techniques and material use in your videos now :) Thanks for the tips and demonstration.
Love it! this one is going to be epic!
Great work. Looks awesome. Can't wait for the paint job
Absolutely awasome!
Tamiya kits are incredibly nice. Great work, uncle!
Super exited to see how this turns out
Great way to start the weekend
Não fico cansado de assistir esse vídeo várias vezes! Que trabalho maravilhoso, rico em detalhes e técnicas.
Awesome work!
Oh sweet. This was my first tank kit I built. Granted I've only built two. But, I'm happy to see you doing one.
You are professional...and an artist.
Sabatons „Metal Maschine“ comes in mind xD. Niche work!
Really awesome build!
Brilliant, as usual.
As always, Uncle Nightshift blowing it out of the water. with those gnarly casting scars, it really makes me want to do that to one of my finished models
Another great video Martin, I never thought of the glue for texturing I'll be using that on my rat rod builds thanks.
This is a master class in texture...
You are the best artist who makes art three-dimensional.
I’ve been working on an IS-2 in 1/56 so I’ll definitely use some of the strategies you used (but smaller) to make it better because yours looks amazing!
Love these vids on a Friday! Cheers
As always- love it
Damn you night shift, you're making me want to build all these expensive kits like the mkv and this is 2
Man a rough looking IS-2 is awesome! Good job brother!
Awesome!!! 😁 I actually just picked up the same Aber barrel for an old reboxed Dragon kit (cyber hobby orange box) so perfect timing! I am glad you've done all the research legwork for me haha 😅 amazing work on this gnarly heavy 🎉🔥
love it. nice work
ooo, thanks Martin! i'm planning IS-2 too (but Zvezda one with all available additions). and your videos will help a lot
You never cease to amaze me Uncle Night Shift. 🙂
watching these videos whilst i work night shifts has become a tradition :) keep up the good work dude
That was great man.
TOTALLY FREAKING AMAZING DETAILING Martin, Thanks For Sharing n God Bless 🤗👍🤗👍 Gary.
Looking dam amazing man!💥💥💥💥💥💥✌
Nice work !!
Looks like the real thing. Very impressive structuring.
Just love these videos.
The IS-2 in the reference photo you showed is from the museum I volunteer at. IS-2 “white 188” actually has a very interesting story. It served in the battle of Berlin, where it was strafed by a 2cm FlaK gun. Round impacts can be seen on the other side of the turret and hull front, including a round still lodged in the armor. It was knocked out by a panzerfaust round on the upper right corner of the front glacis plate, which killed the driver Instantly and set the engine on fire. The rest of the crew either bailed, or were cooked to death. She was than sent to an East German firing range. She was found there and restored. She even runs, although we did need to cannibalize or T-34-85 for the engine!
Zdravím Martine..
Práce na těch pancířích je prostě parádní... Výborně. Jo a ať je bílej nebo žluto, hnědo, zelenej.... Díky, perfektní...
Milan
is2 is one of my favorite too. Great job.
It looks amazing.
Fantastic work! 🙂
