    Ochiba might be the scariest "bad guy" I have seen in recent memory. She scares the SHIT out of me. That voice and pacing of her words. That stare of hers. And that brothel scene. Place another award on the long shelf for that one. I was....almost in a trance the whole time. Amazing.

      That's cause she reminds us of the concept of the "evil mother" and "narcissistic mother" one of the scariest concepts ever. Our nature is that we expect mothers to be loving and warm, when that isn't the case it messes with our knowledge of reality

      That accent always gave me goose bumps, it´s like sing songy snake speach asmr. I heard it before and I think it´s always used by nobles, might also be regional. The tea house owner sounded similar but ... less evil.
      I read the name and origin in a discussion from a game or series but have forgotten all the details. It´s out there somewhere.

    This show is simply insane. I can’t believe how good it is. Everything I wanted Game of Thrones to be (and what so many people mistakenly believe GoT to actually be), this show actually is, and they make it look *easy* while they embody it.

    Here me out..... i have a theory. Why does Torunaga care so much for the heir? He's willing to die to protect the boy. Why does Lady Ochiba want Torunaga to be killed So badly? My theory is that Torunaga is really the father of the boy, meaning the boy isn't really the heir. Lady Ochiba wants Torunaga gone so that that secret dies with him.

      Ooooooooh good idea. That would also call back to the first episode where the Taiko mentioned that Toranaga was almost married to her.

      Toranaga (and all the other Samurai) swore an oath of loyalty to the Taiko and later swore to protect the heir; If he doesn't keep up the appearance of loyalty his allies might abandon him. In real history, after Sekigahara, Tokugawa became Shogun but continued to profess loyalty to the heir for many years.
      In the book it was stongly hinted that the boy's father was a random peasant, (that's why Ochiba makes a comment about drinking drugged tea) the way these writers are going, it might turn out to be Blackthorne

    Yet another chance for us to see why Kiku is the best courtesan. She understands the needs of her clients perfectly. As she understood that Yabushige likes to observe, so she understood that she would sit on the other side of Mariko and John and not between them. He offered a moment between them through her words. The art of a courtesan at this time was very beautifully shown I feel.

      In that case, Team Toranaga should be wary. Kiku may use Mariko and Anjin's intimate secret to her advantage, disrupting the status quo of the fragile clan... as we've witnessed Kiku whispering like a red witch (aka Melisandre ) in previous episodes. The part-time mistress was manipulating the ego and aspirations of the nephew.

    In ancient Japan, the high ranked courtesans are a real deal. They're trained since a very young age and well educated. They not only are good in bed but also know many arts such as poetry, singing, playing instruments, dancing and much more. That's why they are expensive af!

  • @khaii13
    @khaii13 3 місяці тому +25

    Everything was subtext.
    First she said that “this is a private place where it can be dark if you wish it”. Then, after observing his guests says “a woman cannot look away when someone else suffers”, which subtly hints at him deducing whats going on between Mariko-sama and Blackthorne. That wonderful scene where Kiku disappears behind Mariko and she speaks the words but Blackthorne only sees Mariko. And it caps off with Kiku-dono asking if Mariko were to join them. It was all well staged. So well staged that, thankfully, they did not add the actual pillowing scene which would have cheapened the whole thing.

      Imo he was trying to get her to go to the brothel as a cover to sleep with John. I think he'd like them paired together as his power duo, hence why he asked Buntaro why he hasn't divorced her. And if John gets deeply involved with Mariko, maybe he'll stop trying to leave all the time.

  • @khaii13

    The first few minutes revealed that Mariko was unaware of his father’s plans and held contempt for Hidekatsu Toda-sama even then, and i didnt know this until this episode, she views him as below his station as evidenced by her comment in the flashback about how her father is discarding him; also telling Ruri-hime (Ochiba sama) what a joke and worth less alliance it was to marry her off to the Toda family;and also by his comment to Toranaga about how his father should have married her better.
    so much so that when Toranaga revealed truth bombs to her, clearing up her misunderstanding, i was literally shouting at the screan “YES! THANK YOU!” So much so that the next door neighbour knocked on my door to check if i was OK. Lol
    Also, though her words were subtitled “i have failed my father”, it could have also been translated as “I have betrayed my father’s trust”
    And it puts Hidekatsu Toda-sama in a more sympathetic light, though of course, we still disapprove of the Domestic violence.
    And Toranaga Knows. And Kiku-dono knows. And she was setting something up, but Mariko caught herself.

    • @yuriborba9618
      @yuriborba9618 3 місяці тому

      I entirely disagree. Yes, Mariko's father married her to Buntaro so she could scape her fate otherwise, but the Toda family was obviously loyal to Ochiba's father as we got to know during the dialogue over dinner between Mariko, Anjin and Buntaro, when Buntaro shows his obvious despise for Mariko and her family and we, as audience, get to know that Buntaro only made Mariko stay alive because she wished otherwise, so he made it to torture her, since Buntaro doesn't seem to be aware of the plans of Mariko's father and Toranaga. In the end their plan worked out, but not because Buntaro was a good guy helping Mariko and her father out, but probably because they knew Buntaro wouldn't have Mariko free. That is also confirmed when Toranaga says to Buntaro to divorce Mariko if he can't control himself around her, to which Buntaro says no, he will not do it - meaning he will not let her be free of him. To this point all it is shown it he is obviously obsessed with her and with making her suffer.

      1. Mariko looks down on the Toda Family even before the marriage. Saying the joining of their families is a joke and a useless alliance. She felt discarded and thinks his father should have married her better, meaning she feels she was married down.
      2. As for your reactions to Buntaro’s words during his audience with Toranaga, that thing has to be interpreted while taking the nonverbals into account. And the nonverbals for Hidekatsu-sama and Mariko-sama for this episode starts from the flashback.
      3. That being said, my opinion is not definitive and i am happy that you shared your point of view with me, even if our opinions are not aligned.

    Politics is easier to understand when considering the historical context. Lady Ochiba represents the historical Toyotomi clan (the clan of the Taiko), which was in power at the time. Toranaga (Ieyasu) represents the historical Tokugawa clan, the second most powerful clan. Ochiba wants to maintain her clan's hold on power and see her son rise to power. The greatest threat against these plans is Toranaga.
    The historical Ieyasu wanted to be Shogun and was willing to do whatever it took. One thing that has bothered me is that Toranaga is portrayed very differently from Ieyasu. Objectively speaking, Toranaga should be the villain or antagonist. So, when Ochiba says that she has seen Toranaga making plans and conspiracies in the dark, that is actually more in line with the real Ieyasu. It might be that Toranaga is playing the audience hard in this one ;) The real Ieyasu did not care for the heir but used him as a pretext for his actions.

    Kiku is a political trickster, for sure, but she showed true kindness to Mariko & John. The way she told Mariko that she wanted to support her and showed her options of how she could help in this moment. We don’t get to see calculating characters show their moments for kindness enough.

    It would be so cool to find out that Kiku has been secretly working for Toranaga all along: At first spying on Yabu and his nephew, Omi, and then Toranaga gets her to get Omi to get Toranaga's son to instigate the war while Toranaga was literally out of the country with plausible deniability.
    Because the boy was right, an ally with ambition is no ally--but can be a falcon, broken to hunt for you, including his own impulsive son.
