- For the next week or two of photography I'm doing a challenge, downgrading to a 14 year old Canon 550D DSLR Camera and a Canon EF 50mm 1.8 lens. I talk through exactly why in the video alongside some POV Photography with the 14 year old camera in question!
All photos throughout the video were taken on the Canon 550d & Canon 50mm

Correction! I said in the video the 550D has no live view (which it does, I didn’t realise until a few days later when this video was finished) - many apologies!
I bought this camera in broken condition years ago, had to use literally hammer and drill to get it open because all the screws were stripped by previous owner attempts and i didn’t have proper tool either. I can’t believe after so much physical impact, it’s still fully functional after i replace the broken part. And still works fine to this day. Battery is awesome too, last forever lol. Even though i own fancier camera, i still enjoy it as I like how simple, basic it is.
They built them like tanks to survive battle haha! yeah its a really simply camera, nice to go back to basics sometimes
Further proof that it's not the camera, but the photographer that makes the photo... Thanks!
Indeed! and hopefully that will always be the case! 😅
on another thread, people cringe about "oooh this camera doesn't have evf, ah the screen doesn't move and this and that.."
550d has better color science than any current canon camera
Could definitely imagine that to be true, but haven’t used any of the new models for a few years now!
Absolutely love this, mate. Just shows, anyone can pick up one of these cameras and take a great image. Love that you set yourself this challenge in Durham too.
Appreciate it matey!! Haha had to be done! I wanted to shoot more that day but the rain had me hiding in shop doorways for most of it 😂😂
@@DISTANTMEDIA Summer has been quite something so far... Still, you got some cracking images. Wouldn't mind seeing more of Durham featured in your videos, mate.
@@matthewpatterson9184it will be on the autumn photography hit list for sure! And if all else fails I’ll drink coffee in flat white 😂
Great video. Some points here: Pretty much nobody is going to know or care what camera you used by looking at the results. They will just like or not like a picture. If you are good, you can make compelling art from the most basic of cameras including pinhole cameras. If you believe that photos are forever then having the latest camera is meaningless because it will be out-of-date in a year or two but your photos will still exist. Most of the greatest most iconic photos of all time were taken on vastly inferior cameras to what we have today.
Thank you so much - yes for sure, totally agree with you, I could not care less which camera a photo has been taken on, if I like it I like it. This exercise was more about a refresh, taking a step back and going back to basics. Having said that I do think there is a need for modern cameras in some cases, mainly because of the way in which media is distributed these days!
I still use my Canon 400D that I got from my dad to take my photos and it still works great, I love the pictures it takes. Only had to buy a new lens recently.
There’s definitely still a lovely charm to the images from the older camera body’s! Nostalgic!
just recently i have been thinking on getting started on my photography arc, I found this exact same camera on my attic so I'm planning on starting my journey from that, thank you for making this video, because honestly from the reviews and research on this camera I was getting pretty nervous that I wouldn't be able to make some cool stuff with it
You’re welcome mate. Definitely get going with it, it’s still a great camera to this day, it might lack a few features and megapixels but who cares!!
I've been using the 550d for years, and only now am I getting my first full-frame Canon 6D. I gained knowledge with the 550D, and the most valuable lesson is that a new, expensive camera would not make you a better photographer.
100% - All they do is give you more pixels and a few more fancy features hahah
Lost my nikon D200 camera. Then trying my first canon which is 550D. Well, kinda happy remembering this is just a beginner camera compared to D200
I own the t2i. It has 85k clicks, travelled to europe, used on my trips to south México jungle, thrown in sand, mud, rain, shot lunar and solar eclipses and anything you can think of, weddins, social events. And still kicking. Best is to invest in glass.
100% - lenses > cameras
I am in the same boat.
I use my Canon 550d and 50mm mostly for photos when I goto work where I don't want to do any video work.
For most of my videos I use Sony a7iii and Lumix S5iix
Awesome set up mate! I miss the viewfinder on the old canons so much, no wonder you still use it for photos!
I have a T2i (550d), T5, and a T6. The T2i is in some ways nearly the same as my 'newer' cameras. The later non 'i' models didn't differ much. I use the T2i only because I feel the T5 is somewhat of a lesser camera and the only thing the T6 has that is significantly better, was the addition of Wi-Fi. It's a great camera for amateur use and price.
Infuriated me when they just added wifi and played them off as new models 🤣 70D was my all time favourite from Canon!
I love using my dads 550d. It’s my first camera and im going to keep using it until it disintegrates. Funnily enough, its older than me ! It still produces amazing images. Love the camera to bits !❤
There’s something super cool about using a camera older than yourself haha, I have one of my dads as well which he bought in 1986 😂
@@DISTANTMEDIA that awesome mate that you have a camera that old that still works !!, but if we are gonna talk about old cameras, i should tell you about my grandads Olympus film camera, im not sure what model it is but all i know is that it was bought in the 1970s 😀 😂
@@Exzell0123 hahaha amazing does it still work? Get it out for a spin if it does!! 😂
@@DISTANTMEDIA hell yeah man. It works perfectly, il have to go with my dad to go get the film developed but it works like a dream !
@@DISTANTMEDIA i may have gotten the manufacturer date of the 550d wrong. I’m only about a year older than it 😅
My first proper camera, files still look so good.
@@SideshowBob44 they do for sure!
Hi there, I really love your content, I do have canon 550d to, I was wondering is all your photo taken in this video is taken from RAW and then edited or it was taken straight out of JPEG?
Hi mate, thanks so much! They were all taken in raw and then edited yeah, I do that for all photos across all cameras! :)
Would this lens/camera combination along with a Rode VideoMic go ii be good for beginner indie filmmaking? Love your videos!
@@TheBibleWarrior316 the video specs are not great but you could certainly start with it. Although most current smartphones potentially have better video specs than this camera does, and you can attach mics to phones, so maybe check that first :)
I bought this camera(US Rebel T2i) in 2011, and recently picked up photography again as a hobby. I never really knew anything in detail, even simple things like how apeture affects depth of field etc. I'm now looking to buy a lens, and looking at either this 50mm 1.8(photos looks good btw) or the 85mm 1.8. What would you recommend? Since this is a crop camera.
Thanks for watching! I would personally go for the 50, I have not been without a 50 in my bag no matter which camera I owned for way over 10 years, just because it’s such a solid all rounder. 85 is cool and all but you’d probably find its limits what you can shoot a bit cause of the reach!
My 550D makes again great photos with my 50mm f1.8 and my Tamron 17-50 f2.8
@@claptoned0 👌👌
this was my 1. camera ever and still have it
It’s a classic!
I have this camera, but never really got around to learn how to properly use it because my brother borrowed it for years, lol. Just got it back and I definitely want to use it again. Because I've never really used any other camera, I don't think I'll have trouble with the "missing" features you've mentioned that are present in more current cameras. Definitely need to get it cleaned though, and maybe get a new-if secondhand-lens like this.
No you definitely won’t! Especially day to day just taking photos, most stuff on current camera are just nice to have and make things easier, but aren’t really needed.
I’ve bought all my current kit used. It’s a great way to buy and save. I do use a store like Wex though rather than eBay/private sales.
great photos brother
Thanks man!!
My 4000d broke recently so my friend who I used to work for let me buy the 550d I used when I first started photography basically the same if anything better quality photos just no WiFi connection but that's it 😂
hahah they age well to be honest! 70D was my favourite camera up until recently!
this machine is good for Portrait or studio? cuz I am a model thats why I am asking.
Not sure about studio I never shoot in a studio, good for portrait though!
@@DISTANTMEDIA thanks fast reply. I will buy it really even 2024. there no much difference with Canon EOSD650 or D600.
You should try something older like Canon 20D or 30D
It’s more fun to use and the results are amazing
…
Thanks for the tip! I’ll give one a go one day, just used the 550d cause my sister had it lying around haha!
it dose have a live view its in setting
Yeah I noticed that a few days after using it but video was already filmed and edited haha my bad
Does have live view
Aye realised like 3 days in that it actually did 😂 soz peeps
Setting camera for person
The auto person tracking you mean?
if you don't have everything on manual, you might aswell just use your phone camara.
Nah, the mode you use on your camera is one of the least important parts of photography. A crap photo in manual is a crap photo. A perfect shot in AV is a perfect shot
It s not 14 years old it Was sold from 2010 to 2012.... it Could be 11 y o instead😂
The body in the video was bought in feb 2010 - 13 years 6 months old, cheers 😂👍

I m also planning to buy a camera but my budget is very low what shall I do
Can you give me one if you got extra 😂😂 its never goona happen
You could do what I did which is very very strange but I’ll let you in on a little secret of mine. Get a job > save money > buy a camera 😱😱
@@DISTANTMEDIA I'm trying my best to do it 🤞
One day you will find me in your comment section saying I got a camera
Till then I will learn with your video
Hope your subscriber will grow till then
@@allstargamer1122 I look forward to seeing that comment & thank you very much!
@@DISTANTMEDIA keep growing my friend
@DISTANTMEDIA which canon do you recommend for beginners on a budget
I have one, bought it as a beginners camera to learn…Love it does all I needed it to do, which is good as I can’t afford a seriously expensive camera. I’ve taken some great photos with it & as I’ve no experience of singing & dancing cameras the simple one is good for me 😊
Awesome to hear! And if you remember it was once classed as the singing and dancing camera then it makes sense as to why you don’t need anything more!
