- If you ever got lost or stranded out in the bush with no food or gear would you go hungry? Or could you gather up a good feed of wild edible plants in a matter of only a couple hours? lets find out.....
That swiss army knife trick is really clever.
Nice vid. I’m tempted to do something similar on Rakiura. Probably not film it but get to grips with the edible plants 🌱
It's brilliant. Never seen it before and always thought a Phillips screw driver would be more useful. Not now.
TVNZ give this man a show.
Agreed
Cheers mate. More content like this please. Maybe add in some plants to avoid.
You are a true living legend Bro , to have accrued that much information out of our beautiful bush , you have shown us that nobody should starve to death in the great outdoors of NZ . Cheers to you .
Love your videos mate. Makes me wish I was thirty years younger. It's nice seeing a young fella provide for his family doing something he loves. There are zillionaires out there who'd give their right arm to be as content as you. Good on ya.
Bought a smile to my face at the end when you could see the amount of food gathered in such a short time and with the Tui calling in the background.....I love this country and your videos are awesome mate, they help me unwind most evenings from the bustle of city life. Wish I could get out there more often.
That's a massive feed for two hours and even contains a lot of carbohydrates. Gotta love the Kiwi bush and you are a wealth of knowledge! Greetings from Canada and thank you for the great work. The land provides if you take good care of it!
Here in Hawaii we have the tree fern . The tree fern is considered invasive Here. The native Hapuu fern is good eating but you need someone who knows how to prepare it , or its not good tasting. New Zealand looks so much like Hawaii. I enjoy your videos very much. Aloha.
Y'all have amazing pig hunting plus goats and loads of fish. What a wonderful place you live.
Awesome video mate. Great skills. People looking for a good book on this subject should read “A Field Guide to the Native Edible Plants of New Zealand” by Andrew Crowe. It’s a really good book and a handy size to throw in your pack. Love the whio at the end. Beautiful birds. 👍
Awesome book
Thanks for the recommendation! Very much in the learning phase of bushcraft and I'm gearing up to start doing some day trips, ideally I'll kit myself up to go bush for weeks at a time without leaving.
wonderful kaka song to open your video. I'll tell you a good free bush food story. At Waikaremoana I had 1 slice of bread left for me and my sister. So I used the slice of bread to catch a possum (just put bread at the entrance of a plastic sack (pack liner) propped open by sticks. When you hear the possum rusting , wake up and grab the possum. I've caught 2 in 1 night without getting out of my sleeping bag. Anyway I caught a possum with the slice of bread. In the morning walking around the Waikareiti Lake I saw trout, So I used possum kidneys and a line and a hook and caught 2 trout. . So, the moral of the story is when in the bush, never eat your last slice of bread.!! Trout are an introduced species, just a pest fish in National Parks, so don't worry about touristy fly fishing rules, do your bit for our heritage and get rid of those pest fish !!!! (actually baiting hooks is or was legal at Waikareiti which takes the fun out of beating the system.
haha, I was half expecting to see him grab a bunch of things I don't know about, but this is pretty much exactly what mum and dad taught us as kids. Every bush walk we went on, we'd forage the same things as in this vid when we got pekish. We'd bring food along as well, but you know, as kids its more fun to run around the bush.
Never seen the cork screw on a Swiss army knife used like that before lol... that was epic. Great channel.
Thanks so very much indeed for sharing… it’s so awesome to watch… love the down to earth approach… excellent… learned heaps 🙏❤️🥰👍
Awesome Shayne learnt heaps
aWESOME VIDEO, just found the channel. love the NZ bush surviva; tips
Just wondering where you learnt your love of the NZ bush and your knowledge?
I was blessed in that my dad took us out to the Tararua huts and the Orongorongas as kids, he always pointed out and named the different plants around us so we grew up with the knowledge ingrained, and with that a love for nature.
It was a surprise finding out as I got older that most people don't have that knowledge, and many don't have that same love.
"The best season too be lost in the bush"😜. Classic. Like there is a good time. Great video
Great vid as always, hope the family is well and stay awesome bro
I love these videos so much. The entire united states should watch these videos. Its super humbling most people couldn't live if food shop closed. Thanks brother

Fantastic channel
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and life skills. Much respect.
Thanks for educating and sharing.
Cool! Waiting for the next one . Would also like to see how you cook it and eat it,
Enjoyed the video. The challenge in NZ forests will always be getting enough carbohydrates. Maori struggled with it, which is why the arrival of the potato revolutionised their lives.(colenso records, in 1841,that on his first trip across Te Urewera his guide had to go back for more potatoes to keep them going).
Animals in the forest, including the birds, struggle with it, because major sources of carbohydrate such as hinau and tawa berries are only seasonally available. Also many fruiting trees don't bear fruit every year.
I agree, if you were long term subsistence living in the bush you’d mainly be on a Keto diet, lots of animals, the fattier the better.
Kumara would've been their source of carbohydrate back in those days.
Absolutely brilliant video. Informative and really well put together and the drone at the end as a cherry on the cake. I'm curious to know how you gained your knowledge, did you set out to learn or have a mentor who told you? You are so fortunate to have such an amazing ecosystem to wander and harvest from.
Warmest regards from a really jealous guy in Scotland.
Thanks for watching mate! I mostly just like reading lots of books & info on line about edible plants. Still lots I don’t know mind you, take it easy over there in Scotland 🏴😊
I wish so much I had a memory for this stuff. I don't.
But all the good on ya for knowing this stuff.
Dam those mushrooms. Looked great.
Brings back a lot of memories growing up in NZ, I loved being in the bush! A different world!!👍😀💯
As someone whose allergic to grass. Is it allgoods to be in the bush? I really wanna go exploring once lockdown done
Bro you've got a wealth of knowledge. I was trying to ID the plants before you told us. The only one I didn't get was the karamu (I've never been able to confidently ID it.)
I've had the Tawa flesh before but I didn't know you could eat the kernel as well.
Thanks for the awesome video mate.
Cheers

Thanks for this informative video
your the man!! I'm diabetic and always fear not finding food when in need. I'd love to see you do this challenge in the south island
GP of the year in taupo Glen Davies has reversed over 80 diabetic patients now, with diet , not sure which type tho
@@noremaccystoms2195 thanks 🙏 means a lot reaching out. I’m type 1 so from my understanding it’s much more difficult to reserve. I got into a heavy plant based diet with no dairy.. that seemed to help wonders. I think type 2 is more commonly caused by diet and the pancreas is still able to work again. From what I know, cutting out dairy and meat can make a difference overnight..
@@TopNotchPressureWashingNZ he has reversed a couple of tyoe 1 , here is part 1 of 3

Great challenge bro
Hey bro great video , which region is this bush ? Is the native bush a lot different in the north island to Southland ? You still get all this food in both islands native bush?
Cheers bro, this vids in the BOP north island. Does change a bit depending where you are. No Tawa trees in the far South, still lots of different coprosmas down there though and all the other ones. Every bit of bush is different though, but generally there’s at least one or 2 plants you can eat 😊
Why is it right to cook the Tava kerns? What problem will be happened if to eat them fresh?
I just wanted to swat that mosquito on your forehead at the start!!! 👊
Great video, just need a juicy venison steak to go with it!! 🇦🇺 chur
You need to add a disclaimer, if you are offended by vegan videos that present the humane killing of live plants , Do Not Watch This Video. Just kidding mate, I enjoy your content.
