Pigeons are not fussy eaters, they will eat any food waste they find including things like burgers, fries, pizza and anything else that is discarded in the street.
However an ideal healthy diet for a pigeon should primarily consist of seeds & grains with some fruit, berries and insects.
If You Have A Pigeon then there are plenty of commercially produced pigeon feeds with the correct nutritional balances to keep your pigeon healthy.
There are also a wide variety of seeds that can easily be bought.
To be sure that your bird is getting the best possible range of nutrients, mix different kinds of seeds together.
Pigeons can eat seeds from almost any flowering plant so that there is a great deal of choice.
Sunflower and safflower seeds are both good choices that are easily available.
However it is very important that you do not give your pigeon an all-seed diet, as this will lead to vitamin-A deficiency.
This can cause a range of health issues including nasal discharges, sneezing, swelling, conjunctivitis, poor feather quality, feather picking, anorexia and more!
It is important to include grains in your pigeon’s diet as they provide them with carbohydrates to keep them fueled.
Suitable varieties include wheat, corn, barley, millet, rye, oats - essentially, anything that is classed as a cereal crop.
Your pigeon’s diet should consist of a mix of different types of seeds, plus a mix of different types of grain should make up to half your pigeon’s daily diet.
Chopped-up vegetables are good to add too. Almost anything that is naturally available will do, but it is better to use those kinds that don’t absorb a lot of water. Pigeons are known to eat both spinach and peas.
Fruits and berries will also add to a balanced diet. Although pigeons aren’t known as great fruit eaters, they still do.
An ideal supplement to their diet is apples, but don’t include the seeds as the small amount of cyanide in the seeds can be harmful to pigeons.
Avocado is one of those exotic fruits that shouldn’t be given to your pet pigeon either. It contains a chemical called persin, which is also toxic to pigeons.
While pigeons should get their fill primarily from seeds, grains, fruit and veg we all know that this is rarely true of city pigeons who will eat anything, some of the most common food choices for city pigeons are:
-Pizza
-Chips
-Kebabs
-Chinese Food
-Bread
-Popcorn
-Kitchen Waste
Despite the abundance of burgers that get left lying around pigeons do not typically eat meat as they struggle to tear it up and break it down with their beaks. They are vegetarian.
The diet of wood pigeons is very different to that of city pigeons.
City pigeons have a man-made banquet while pigeons who live in the countryside are at the vagary of what Mother Nature provides, finding food for themselves.
They eat the food that they find in nature, this is a far more healthy diet that closely resembles the ideal pigeon diet that you should feed your pet pigeon.
A wood pigeon’s diet typically consists of:
- Seeds such as grass seeds and wildflower seeds. These are abundant and make up the bulk of their seed intake.
- Grains - This includes things like wheat, barley, corn and millet. This may be on farmland or growing in the wild.
- Fruits - particularly berries.
- Insects - such as worms and spiders.

Update: it's been a year since the rescue, and I wanna say it was my proudest rescue! The pigeon healed in a week and flew away! Also, it was a White Winged Dove! I love doves 🕊!

Cracked corn, cooked rice, oatmeal, peas, don't give them burgers or fries but put potato instead. A balanced diet is seeds with vitamins added, any birdfood or wild bird seeds will do. Don't give sunflower seeds snacks or popcorn because it has salt. If you have to force the food for a sick pigeon make sure you wash your hands. Hold the beak open and use pigeon pellets is best for baby birds. If you have to make a mash add water and allow them enough to fill his crop. Also syringe feeding is not that difficult. Once you grow your pigeon up, he will come home if you let him back to the city. Good luck.

I have a pigeon who visits me every day and she loves red lentils!
I found a young pigeon yesterday and I feel like a new mum I'm a guy. I'm like a fish out of water trying to do the right thing for it. I feel like a prison guard force feeding a prisoner in a cell. It's about a month old going by his feathering, still some yellow but not much. To many options and opinions on utube to know what is the right way for the bird. Help 🐟

When you say CORN are you saying unseasoned Popping corn ? And what about chia seeds and uncooked rice ? Ive seen other videos that suggest uncooked rice that framkly scares me i only give cooked rice without seasoning for my little 6 to 7 member family of wild city pidgeons that live on my 6 story high rise and come 2 to 3 x a day for raw unsalted sunflower seeds I now know to not give exclusively anymore, THANK YOU for sharing this helpfull video I would never forgive myself if I fed them anything that could harm them .

You can feed pigeons unseasoned + uncooked corn, rice, and chia seeds. It’s okay for them to eat those things (: as long as there’s more variety added to that too.

My pigeon refused to anything else except for barley it's a problem I change their diet and they refused to eat their rather stay hungry than eating something else

dried lentils are only suitable for bigger birds, there is some debate over whether or not pigeons are big enough to eat them. To be safe we suggest cooking them first.
You rarely see them eating garbage even in the city

I saw squirrels eating from the garbage. Pigeon will eat anything that could be edible on the floor.
Do they eat insects like ant, bed bugs, fleas, ticks, myriapods, grasshopers, locusts,moths, scarabs?! If not, we need an added cleaner in the city...

One baby pigeon in a city died from cramps. He was found by me on the street close to a falaffel bar t hat use grillspice with E602 mtaste enhancener that I got sick from. Also wildlife get sick from this.
