    Spartan is pretty much correct on Tywin's motives. He loathes the fact that when Jaime and Cersei were young children his life for a short time was perfect, as he had dreamed of having children so strong and so beautiful that no one would ever think to laugh at the name Lannister as they laughed at his weak willed father. The Lannisters genetically have also been known to always be tall, strong and attractive. Then along comes Tyrion and shatters Tywin's bubble. It is implied that Tywin really believes the gods "punished" him with Tyrion because he enjoyed too much success and needed humbling, and that Tyrion subsequently literally exists for the purpose of emberassing him. He also resents that his wife Joanna died giving Tyrion life as Joanna is said to have been the only one who could make Tywin laugh, even implied that she had the ability to change his mind/make him do things her way back hom at the Rock. And when Joanna died so did Tywin's smiles.

      Yes, there are seven Kingsguard, with a particular uniform-armor and their white cloak which represents their vows (sworn not to have wife/children nor lands/titles), they serve the King/Queen and their family until death. He gives us my favourite quote from the books, one I trot out whenever people start the "who would win" arguments: "I have seen a hundred tournaments and more wars than I would wish, and however strong or fast or skilled a knight may be, there are others who can match him. A man will win one tourney, and fall quickly in the next. A slick spot in the grass may mean defeat, or what you ate for supper the night before. A change in the wind may bring the gift of victory. Or a lady's favor knotted round an arm."

    An interesting point about Tywin is that he married his cousin Joanna Lannister.
    Normally, Tywin would be expected to marry someone outside the family for an alliance and to strengthen their hand, but Tywin was only ever interested in Joanna.
    Across the books, it's mentioned that Tywin never smiles, (although occasionally his mouth threatened to do so, and was apparently terrible to behold.)
    Tywin smiles the Jaime and Cersei were born, and he smiled the day Aerys named him Hand.
    Joanna was the only person who could make Tywin laugh, when she died, so too did his laugh and smile.
    Tywin believes his children have grown up to disappoint him and that Tyrion is the worst of the lot.
    The great irony of this, (as Tywin's sister points out,) is that Tyrion is far more like Tywin than either Jaime or Cersei. (Apparently Tywin refused to speak to her for half a year for saying that.)

    A couple things to note about dynamics this episode:
    On Stannis and Melisandre - Stannis, at this point, is so convinced by Melisandre because she has repeatedly proven herself powerful, and her prophecies correct. Between her prophecies and her shadow assassin she has proven to him she has supernatural power of some kind. Given his army is now shattered, he NEEDS a trump card like that in order to win the war. Melisandre is his best shot. That she is assuring him she could've changed the outcome of the battle had she been there is icing on the cake. She gave him that army in the first place, by removing Renly. He needs more of that from her now.
    Stannis' trust in Ser Davos is at an all time low, as it was Davos who pressed for Stannis NOT to bring Melisandre to the battle. In that way, Davos cost him victory (as he sees it) and so his continued protesting against Melisandre seems unreasonable and counterproductive to the war effort. At this point, to Stannis' mind, Davos might as well be arguing he should just let himself lose the war to keep the supposed moral highground. It's Melisandre or bust.
    As for Melisandre burning people... Melisandre is a firm believer in the Lord of Light, and believes burning these people as sacrifices will encourage her God to bless her in ways that will allow her to aid and guide Stannis. Stannis sees it as a means to an end, given Melisandre has otherwise proven she has access to supernatural power.
    On Margaery Tyrell and Joeffrey - Margaery has a bit of protection from Joeffrey's sadism that Sansa did not have. Namely, the Tyrells command the largest army in Westeros and supply all the food to King's Landing. If Joeffrey severely abuses Margaery and it angers the Tyrells, they could pull out of their alliance with the Lannisters and turn the tide of the war. Margaery's family has powerful leverage. Sansa, on the other hand, had no clout. Her family was already at war with the Lannisters so angering them didn't matter.

    The way I see it - Joffrey has to be nice to Margery, because her family is around, and the second richest house in the kingdoms. If he ever lay a hand on her, even he knows the consequences. Sansa was a play thing for him simply because she had nobody to protect her, and her family were in open war.

    • @karimabidi8312
      @karimabidi8312 Рік тому +17

      Yeah, but there are two more differences:
      -Sansa was really naive and he could manipulate her, Margery is more clever and she knows how she has to act near Joffrey.
      -The Tyrells are a big house from the south, they aren't as different as the northern with their own culture and religion

      I think Margaery also speaks to Joffrey in a way that makes him feel special and important too, she’s very deliberate about how she talks to him and she is more wordly and experienced and knows what she’s doing where Sansa is moreso just innocent and naively wanted to marry a prince with romanticized ideas.

    • @cassandramcbride7007
      @cassandramcbride7007 Рік тому +4

      Theres several factors about the difference he treated Sansa and Margaery... Family isnt important to Joffrey. Even when Ned was around, he did mistreated Arya. The big differences is how both Sansa and Margaery treat him
      -Sansa treated Joffrey like a god and worship him to a point of small herself down. She barelly show any character or even defend herself. Sansa wasnt interesting or even challenge to him. Easily manipulated and too weak. Sansa didnt knew how to speak with him without fear, besides kissing is ass! Even before the abuse!
      -Margaery on the other hand, speaks to him... sure she kiss his ass too, but is more subtle and its interesting. She knows how to lead a conversation and she shows some sort of character. She shows emotions and have no fear to talk to Joffrey. She is a enigma for Joffrey to discover. Plus Margaery treats Joffrey as a person, (despite knowing how importante he is) and not someone just to please! (obvious she does, but its subtle).
      -Its like Cersei. She treats Joffrey as this important person, almost all mighty but same time she reduce him to be just a child. A spoilled child that can do as his please, but she demands that he grow up in certain situations. She doesnt treat him like a son, that happens to be the most important person in the westeros. This is where Margaery wins. Margaerys sees Joffrey for what he is (this is the prespective she is giving to him) and treats him like a person that happens to be the King. But at the same time she knows her place.
      -Sansa wasnt educated to live in the kingslanding, so she doesnt know how to play the diplomacy game, in fact Sansa wouldnt be a good Queen. In fact she would support Joffrey in every bad decisions he made... just not to upstet him.
      -Cersei had to learn how to play the diplomacy game, by living in Kingslanding. But every move or game was supported by Tywin. Thats why she doesnt know how to read the game in long distance. She creates a problem by fixing one problem
      -Margaery was educated in the political game. She shows to the players, what she wants them to see (Littlefinger is the perfect example. How in the first conversation, she just played with him. making him believe she was naive, till the last strike, where she shows, she knows how she can read a person and using that at her vantage) but not sounding too much forced (like Sansa did) or controlling too much (like Cersei did) without loosing herself or her goal. Will she become a good Queen? who knows!?

    Sir Barriston Selmy was a huge win for daenerys. Yes his a good fighter etc... But in reality it all comes to image and continuity, Having your fathers kings guard choose you as his successor would be a huge westerosie PR bonus, not only that but it was common knowledge during the Baratheon era the kingsguard became a joke with the last living true kingsguard supporting the last living heir, this episode was critical for daenerys as she was on the up and comming, growing dragons, ships, and trade but also having a elder and experienced tactician and guard that could finally fill her in on her history, Jorah did his best but having a member of the kingsguard who served during the Targeryan Dynasty who knew the ins and outs and gossip of the family was a huge win, she was with someone who could now teach her everything she needed while giving her a more respectable position of power as a queen with a queensguard.

Especially in the military. People are given medals and rewards. They can even get awards directly from country leaders too (presidents, monarchs) at events dedicated to soldiers or whatever.
    So Tyrion, who literally organised the defense of the capitol and was instrumental in saving everyone's lives, should have been rewarded greatly in expressions of gratitude. He's not asking for much nor asking for anything unusual. He's just been shafted because his family hate him for being a dwarf.

    One thing I don’t like about Stannis so far is that he’s kinda a doormat. He lets Melisandre control him like a puppet and instantly believes in everything she says. I wouldn’t be surprised if all of this Lord of Light talk is actually a scam fabricated by Melisandre so she herself can get to the Iron Throne through Stannis. But everyone on that island seems to be drinking her cool aid(except for Davos)and the visions may actually be real.
    As for Margaery, I agree with you that she has a kind heart but she also has an ambitious agenda too: To be the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms and nothing less than that. The main reason why she visited the poor in the first place was for publicity. A future ruler needs to be loved by the people at first sight so they won’t ever be in everlasting danger walking around their own streets. Plus, it gives the ruler power and influence over everyone there, for themselves and for their house to thrive. And Margaery knows of this all too well. She is very intelligent, cunning, and influential as what we have seen so far. And extremely ambitious like you guys said in wanting to be Queen. That’s the main reason why she married Renly Baratheon in the first place: To become his Queen Consort and have a high position at his side. She didn’t care whether or not he was gay, it was the power he had at the time that she wanted. But I think she genuinely liked him well enough at the same time, as she gave him no hate in having a relationship with her brother and was ok with them staying together. And regarding the smallfolk, yes she mainly visited them for publicity for House Tyrell but at the same time, she still gave them food, water, shelters, and other resources too, regardless of her true motives. It was basically a win win solution in the end, where everyone ended up happy. So Margaery might end up being a fine ruler.

      Yeah, that would have been a powerful alliance. Robb had no interest in sitting on the throne like Renly, if they would have allied themselves, they would have been a force.
