    Honestly Simon deserved to be stopped but I think this also shows how the train isn’t very healthy to people with dependent or weak mental stability. Simon needed to confront his issues head on and while the train does do that it also throws in a lot of high risk scenarios with little to no human people that to a young mind like Simon can obviously duck them up even more.

      remember that at this time Emilia was in control of the train, so none of the passengers had an introduction which the pod that deposits them in their starting cars during season 2 (when one-one was in control) provides ( it tells people to work on getting their number down after they wake up, except for that old guy MT/Lake stole the pod from, that guy is dead.

    I think the difference between Simon’s and Grace’s arcs was brilliant- they were both kids that encountered the train very young and lived on it for most of their formative years. They both became horrible people and rulers of a child cult- but Grace had more empathy than Simon. Due to the course of events, she could be redeemed. Simon, however, despite getting chance after chance, just got worse. The creators of Infinity Train were able to recognize that some people just can’t be redeemed, and Simon was one of them

    • @dragonheart1236

      Simon did get chances, but he didn't get NEARLY as many as Grace. He had chances, but those chances came too late for him to make the right choice. By the time they came, he was already warped beyond rescue.

    • @joyc.e.7511
      @joyc.e.7511 3 роки тому +40

      @@dragonheart1236 It wasn't just his number of chances (and I'm pretty sure he did get close to the same amount, but he ignored them), it was how he reacted that got to me. He got violent and cruel and was refusing any chances he got, refusing to see anything past his own reasoning. Grace was shown to have tiny hints of empathy from the 1st episode of the season though. I think part of the reason Simon ended the way he did was his own personality. It's also partially Grace's fault, but ultimately it's his own because of the choices he made because he just COULDN'T be wrong. Even when he is told the truth straight to his face.

    • @dragonheart1236
      @dragonheart1236 3 роки тому +59

      @@joyc.e.7511 Simon starts off as a kid with issues, who gets abandoned by the cat. He refers to the cat as "his Tuba" which implies they were very close. This likely gives him abandonment issues. Then enters Grace, a kid who doesn't know any more then Simon, but pretends she does. There's a very clear power dynamic between the two, in Grace's favor. She's the one in control, she's the leader. She's Simon's friend, the person he can look up to. She tells him what they're doing is ok. But then, after a while, it's suddenly not ok anymore, and Grace gets more and more upset for continuing to behave in the way they have always behaved.
      Then, Grace lies to Simon. Grace, the person he trusts more then anyone, shows him that she doesn't trust him. The person he looks up to calls him a monster for doing the things she likely taught him to do. His mental state continues to deteriorate, and instead of trying to help, at each and every turn Grace does the exact thing to make the issues worse, until Simon snaps.
      Is Simon responsible for his actions? Of course. But to deny the fact that Grace played a very large part in crafting his mental state is just wacky. She was more then just a little bit in the wrong. She was in almost just the same amount of wrong as Simon. The difference is, Grace, the one with the power in the dynamic, was able to change in time. Where as Simon, didn't, and for that, he got the Raiders of the Lost Ark treatment.

    • @joyc.e.7511
      @joyc.e.7511 3 роки тому +17

      @@dragonheart1236 I didn't deny Grace's responsibility though. Her behavior, although also understandable because of her own issues, made his worse. She was being a horrible friend, though she didn't realize she was exacerbating his issues.
      But it's not that Grace changed in time compared to Simon. Simon chose not to even consider changing. And also stooped to murder. That's the biggest thing about him that is irredeemable.
      Grace slowly starts to understand denizens are people, primarily through Hazel, but Simon doubles down on his cruelty and belief, despite also seeing how human Hazel is and doesn't really show remorse? That's what separates him from Grace to me and I don't know how much that has to do with their power dynamic. Even if their dynamic was reversed (but not their personalities) , I don't think Grace would have gotten to Simon's point. I can't know for sure, of course. And I'm not trying to say that Simon's fate was unavoidable, but I am saying his personality (and subsequent personality disorder) played a part in how he ultimately ended up.

    • @dragonheart1236
      @dragonheart1236 3 роки тому +17

      @@joyc.e.7511 you are correct, Grace probably would not end up as bad as Simon if roles were reversed. However Simon is an evil character that, didn't need to be evil. Right up to the end of his life, he was a scared child looking for control. A scared child, that when the chips were down, had only the Cat as his ally. The cat, who was the one who served as the first stepping stone in the road to his madness. Grace would seemingly know about Simon's issues with the Cat, but chose to ignore that. She does realize this later, to her credit.
      All in all, Simon is responsible for what Simon does. But equally, Grace is responsible for what Grace does. And Grace's choices magnify Simon's issues to the point it leads to his demise. Simon lived and died, a scared child. And sometimes, scared children are the worst villains.

      It's the best option. He is a tragic figure, with clear mental issues shoved into a terrifying and dangerous setting at a young age, abandoned, then shown a terrible world view that he internalized because it was from the one person he grew dependent on. Even at the very end he's not entirely evil and clearly very conflicted. He's also a bigoted mass murderer, a narcissist who can't stand being wrong about anything and doubles down when he's easily disproven about things. He is possessive, controlling, and entitled. He lacks empathy and has clear mental health issues. And while still young he is old enough to be held accountable for his actions, especially murder. It's good to acknowledge that he's not pure evil and he wasn't just born evil but brought up to be that way from his environment. But in the end he is still responsible for his actions and is undeniably an awful person.

If she just guided the kids to lower their numbers, she wouldn't really let them grow on their own, since they all had their own issues. My problem is that starlight still uses her power to "solve" issues instead of working through it by emotional honest confrontation.
      Just think about the two sister Episode or the episode in which she brainwashes all of the main six except for twilight.
      She still uses force and only sloooowly started to change a tiny bit *after* people forgave her.
      When you did something terrible and effected a lot of people, your fear of not being forgiven is not the only payment you have to go through.
      You have to recognize *what* and not *why* you did something wrong and put in the effort to guarantee it won't happen again.
      Starlight only learned about the "why" she was doing something wrong but she didn't really understand what of the things she did was wrong: forcefully controlling people to keep them close so they don't leave and do what she says. She admitted that she did something wrong but never truly learned what was wrong.

    I actually really like Simon as a character. He's the best kind of villain. One who isn't evil for evil's sake, but rather the grown result of his environment. This allows viewers to empathize with him, and understand his motivations. However, he still becomes the villain because he still CHOOSES to double down and actively be cruel to others in an attempt to keep control. This makes viewers dislike him, and want him to fail, but at the same time we can understand he very likely developed a narcissistic personality disorder from BEING LEFT TO DIE AS A CHILD ON A CRAZY REALITY-SHIFTING TRAIN! We hate what he has become, because he allowed himself to become what he is. But we can still understand him and feel empathy. THAT, is excellent character development and writing. One thing I went over is that when Grace asks what she'd do without Hazel, Hazel replies "You'd die until you were dead". At first it was just Hazel, but after episode 10, she was right.
    Without Hazel, Grace doesn't learn empathy towards denizens. Without Hazel, Grace must confront that she was a bitch and used others to keep herself happy and with other people. Without Hazel, Grace must confront what she did by herself and how she was horrible to the Apex, to Simon to probably all the denizens she injured and murdered over the years, and ultimately, herself. Without Hazel, Grace would not have shown sympathy to the origami cranes. Without Hazel, Grace might as well have been dead.
    Yes, Hazel is right. Without the little girl's presence, Grace would've ended up dying because of the lies she spread.

    19:48 which is ironic, because the train is supposed to be a metaphor for therapy and helping you deal with the emotional issues in your life. Heck, the train is supposed your free, extended therapy session that may or may not take place in a different dimension where time moves slower (< this is the "may or may not" part), seeing how Tulip at the end of her season got to go back home without despite spending months stuck inside the train with no signs of getting an earful from her worrying parents. You don't just get to vanish for months in the real world and get to return to your ordinary life just like that, even with a timeskip of a few months between when the leaves the train and her being with her parents. There's also Jesse who's safe to assume he's also been spending a significant amount of time on the train, days if not weeks, yet his family acts like he's only been gone for an afternoon. Depending on your definition I think the word "manipulation" could be a bit strong for what Grace does in this season. Manipulation is usually something that someone does for their own gain, at the cost of others. Grace and Simon genuinely believed that 1-1 was a false conductor, and were probably thinking that they were really helping Hazel when they convinced her to join their cult.
    I also dont think that Simon deserved to be killed, simply for the reason that I'm against capital punishment. This could be seen as a meaningless detail, but I often see discussions of this season mentioning how Simon was killed because he was irredeemable. I think this take is inaccurate, since given the right treatment, Simon could probably improve. That being said I do think the writers made a good choice in killing him off, as it makes for a more engaging and interesting ending. Anyway those are my thoughts.

    I wholeheartedly agree with simons analysis, and just to take a very cynical perspective of how his character should have been handled (which I personally think the way the show handled it was correct) is that the train failed Simon, as it is stated the train is supposed to help you work through your problems, and yet the catalyst for his journey was all in the supposed control of the train, with the denizens being the factors that caused conflict and ultimately led to the interaction that grace got involved with. The train exacerbated simons problems with situations that the train supposedly has control over (as the train creates the cars and denizens), and in that sense the train failed it’s supposed #1 priority, which is to help its passengers (in this case Simon)

    Simon and Grace are great examples of how characters can be rescued from the brink or left to fall on a razor's edge.
    Grace was outwardly more inclined to choose bad decisions and encourage people to follow her down, but because she grew up seeking attention and building followers, she managed to befriend Grace and learn from her to undo her toxic mindset, but with how much she already lied, the truth meant nothing to convince Simon to join her
    In contrast, Simon was more sensitive and inward, abandoned by the cat and following Grace for security. But because he always followed Grace and didn't seek out other relationships the way she did, he had no intrinsic motivation to follow the right path, only seeing his friend "stolen" from him and doubling down on everything that used to work until he died for it.
    Very little actually separated Simon and Grace and that makes their opposing journeys all the more fascinating

    • @SirCowduck
      @SirCowduck 2 роки тому +2

      Okay this. This is what I've been looking to see if anyone else thought after finally watching season 3, because it's the specific part of their back-and-forth during the finale that felt like it undercut a lot of my enjoyment of it. The entire first part of the finale was about Grace acknowledging exactly how much what happened was because of her own actions, including a lot of Simon's development into who he was. And then in her trying to talk him down, she dances around her own what guilt she does have in the only time she mentions it ("I've made a lot of mistakes, *but* that wasn't one of them."), and then says she isn't responsible for him and doesn't owe him anything. Which is fair, ultimately Simon's decisions were his own and not Grace's, and to a point I can understand why their dialogue goes down the way it does. Grace literally just started processing her own baggage, and she's spent her entire life up to this point not acknowledging her own failings to other people or even herself, so a full-on apology could be a bit of a leap in her character arc. But having one there could have made the whole scene more satisfying by making it even clearer that Simon at that point was beyond any help that she could give him. Imagine Grace legitimately apologizing for what wrong she did do, and Simon still responding with "Another hollow apology, Grace?" Or responding to it by fully putting the blame for everything wrong with him on her. It definitely feels like that was what they were going for in that scene ("You owe me EVERYTHING!") , but just a bit more in Grace's lines feels like it could have helped sell that Grace had said everything she could and Simon still would never listen, at least to me.

      @@SirCowduck Yes!! Really good analysis. I agree with you, a proper apology would still be a huge leap for Grace, and Simon still wouldn't have accepted it. I think it was how the scene delivers in its message that definitely felt off to me. Like it was prioritizing "you're not responsible for the choices of others" without acknowledging the nature of Grace and Simon's friendship throughout. Which in some ways is fair. Simon's choices were his own. There was still a lot of deliberate clues put into the show that Grace was a terrible friend for the 5 or so years they knew each other which just felt glossed over toward the end. She's not responsible for his decisions to hurt and kill others, but she is responsible for years of emotional damage, which I'm sure given time she will have remorse for. The final confrontation just didn't have the chance to follow through on that buildup. Oh well, IT is amazing but no show is perfect.

People die on the train. People can become worse on the train. People can start cults full of the children on the train. Instead making some arbitrary magical rules to keep things positive and "child appropriate" (in quotes cause i think this is a fantastic cartoon for kids) it lets things be real and I love that.

This seems unrelated, but I'm think of it as a continuation from his conversation with Lake. I thought Book2 was beautifully executed, but it always kind of bugged me that One-One got away with just casually giving Lake their exit without really having to recognize them as a full person (like after psychologically torturing them, basically, One-One's just like "yeah sure, whatever").So if there were a moment where One-One was confronted with another denizen and maybe had to reflect on that, I think that'd be cool.

Not everyone is going to want to change and not everyone is going to have done things that you can jusr, for lack of a better word, take back or make up for. I think if Simon stayed alive, it would've taken a really specific, really hard hitting event for him to realize that he needed to change. But I don't think IT would've done that because he was simply too far gone and consumed by his narcissism.

      @JetblackJay 3 роки тому

      Simon wasn't evil he just couldn't accept change the same way as Amelia but it bit him in the ass because he had trust issues as well Amelia could have left the train earlier if she accepted her loved one being gone but both can't accept these things fully they are neutral at the end of the day

    • @47ratsinahoodie
      @47ratsinahoodie 3 роки тому +8

      @@JetblackJay If we're ignoring that Simon refused to see reason and that Amelia originally refused to see reason, I could agree with them being neutral, but only one of those two characters was actually willing to not only admit they messed up but try to better themselves. Maybe calling Simon downright evil was an overstatement but he definitely let his narcissism consume him and getting help of some kind from Amelia and Grace was something he voluntarily rejected. If he didn't continue insisting he couldn't ever be wrong, he wouldn't have died. I think misguided and broken are better descriptors but it doesn't excuse his actions and that his demise comes down to his actions and his reactions to Grace's actions, things he could've controlled or gotten help with.

    Ok so simon pushing her off and having a breakdown was so, so powerful. I mean he died which shocked me so much. But man you see him laugh, then realize what he did and cry, and then completely lose his mind and laugh again. He was beyond the point of no return by that moment which is probably why he died. I think one of the most interesting things about season 3 is that it shows how the train doesn't even work in some cases, Simon entered on the train as a child with some personal problems and died on the train a racist cult-leading mass murderer. He was worse when he died than when he first got on the train. Obviously it's Simon's fault that he's the way that he is but considering that the train is supposed to make you a *better* person and it seems to have blatantly failed with two major characters (the other one being Amelia) this is a pretty big deal. I think it would have been really interesting if the show got to explore the train's own failings and maybe even get a personal growth arc about One-One and how putting people in a train with the potential for life-long emotional scars and horrifying self-indulgence isn't a guaranteed method at personal growth.

    I think the reason that Simon couldn't accept the fact he was wrong was because it was a good justification for his anger against the cat. His hatred for her allowed him to accept the misguided ideas and then weaponize them against the denizens. He couldn't be wrong because then he wouldn't have anything to weaponize against those people. He couldn't be wrong because it would force him to forgive to at least some degree. He wasn't able to change the core of what had become his life, so he couldn't give up the ideas that were his justification for his revenge. Frankly, I don't see anyone to be blamed for this instance. The train doesn't usually sick the roach monsters on people, that was related to the conductor. The conductor had her own issues and was in her own world, so she didn't intend to harm anyone. The cat was reasonable and running from a monster she could not stop and had no real means of helping Simon. And Simon was doing his best with his abilities. The train system works when its left to run. However, it can become destructive when careless people use it. TBH, what made Simon was really hurt people accidentally passing on their hurt in their misguided and delusional methods to avoid confronting their problems.
