  • After driving two other Porsches with the same engine, the Porsche 718 Spyder and the Porsche 718 GT4, MotoMan finally drives the slightly detuned Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 and learns it’s really good, but presents a challenge in the Porsche world. Meanwhile in a round of our famous #OptionsGame, we are presented with a science experiment from Zuffenhausen . . .

Porsche did it. The world's best 2 speed manual transmission.

GTS 4.0 can be spec'd in ways the Cayman and Spyder can not, like 14-way seats with ventilation, interior colors, paint, and wheels. All versions of the 4.0 are a winner in my book, just have to pick the one that best fits your usage.

It still blows my mind MotoMan's videos don't get more views compared to to other car UA-camrs. He's one of the best imho.

I am an average driver, dont go to the track but like to drive twisty roads on a sunday morning and take the wife out for an evening drive and have a fancy coffee or so. I have a 2015 Boxster GTS in carmine red and although i like the 4.0 ( and will probably get one) , i would not take the spyder for the manual roof and less comfortable ride. Most folks that can afford the car are a few years older and racing is not what it is all about. Anyway, just my 0.02.

I think you are quoting Porsche 0 to 60 times, 718 4 cyl GTS has been recorded at 3.6 seconds…..close to a base 911.

I would much rather have the GTS 4.0 with the electric mechanical folding roof than the ungainly, poorly insulated, ugly roof on the Spyder, in fact if it was an option on the Spyder, I'm pretty sure a great majority of buyers will add it. It's the same Porsche Jedi mind trick of making you pay more for less features, like more for the Cayman than the Boxster until the 718 gen, more for the T version with the silly cloth straps for the door release which will probably have to be replaced after a few years for god knows how much. If the reason to buy the Spyder over the GTS is that it is a better investment than I think you should look at the used market for the 981 where the manual GTS's are hard to come by and the Spyders are plentiful. Sure they are closer to the original MSRP but remember the Spyders were sold at 10 to 20K above MSRP and the GTS could be had at 10 percent under MSRP. Most of the Spyders are low mileage garage queens because of the roof. It seems like it's not such a big deal at first but I put my top up and down at least twice on each drive, before I get on the Freeway and after I get off, or when I get tired of the sun beating down on my face or the occasional rain that you even get in sunny Southern california. I don't have to sit in traffic breathing in all the noxious fumes because I can't raise the top without stopping and getting out of the car. I don't have to look at the weather forecast before I go out for a drive. And with the top up the GTS gives you a more insulated coupe like experience so you truly don't need to have another car. As for the long gearing, it is only frustrating because you can't rev it out all the time due to the speed limit. I don't find the need to hit the red line on every shift during my normal daily drives and the torque is plentiful at 2000 rpm for in town driving in a sensible manner. No one should be buying a car like this and never drive above the speed limit. If that's the case just buy a camry or an EV. This car is for the canyons or drives to the countryside with low traffic where you can stretch it out without danger to the public and yourself at extralegal speeds. in that scenario the gearing is still long but not annoying at all. What's the difference between shifting from 2nd to 3rd and occasional 4th gear vs 3rd to 4th with occasional 5th gear runs. If feels exactly the same and sounds incredible cause you'll be at the same RPM's any way. PDK's and automatics are just boring at all speeds where the Manual is fun at all speeds, even in traffic. It's not for everyone but it's not meant to be. It's for the purists who are small in number but are ever willing to pay more if they have to for the experience as borne out for the market for the vintage cars or restomods. This is the closest you'll get to a high performance restomod in a modern production car with all the safety, performance, convenience and a warranty. I'd still wait to get a lightly used GTS 4.0 in a few years but if you wait too long you won't be able to find one used either as the second owners are the ones that really want and know what they have.

Why hasn’t MotoMan talked about the elephant in the room - the gear ratios?!

Love Porsche’s and this is absolutely a great car, but $121k is honestly ridiculous for any Boxster, particularly one that isn’t a Spyder

This car will hammer spyder resales, I grant you the spyder is better looking with the roof down, but given this cars more usable nature with auto roof and slightly less weight, which really smacks the spyder in the mouth, this is the car to buy... for me. Being more of a GT the gearing ratios are less significant on this model, if they were ever an issue at all.

Great vid. First person I heard talking economics too....and I think you're right. True GT cars will likely turn out to be better value despite more expensive list price.

Great video. How is the intake noise and exhaust tone? A lot of folk bashing the 718 4.0s because of the way the exhaust flaps work (shut 2k-5k rpm) and the additional OPFs (which you may not have in the US). Hard to tell on camera but did sound good

I understand why people prefer the 6-Cylinder NA over the 4-Cylinder Turbo - and it makes me kind of happy. because low Mileage and almost new 718 Turbos are now available for about 40K Euros. That brings them in range as a 2nd car for the weekends. Even with the 4-cylinder, it`s still a great Sportscar and for that price, I could live with less sound happily.

I completely agree and would also opt for the GT4/Spyder
