    In my state, you only have to stop for the bus if you are on the same side of it (on a four-lane road). Things like this should be the same no matter what state you are in, so I live in Kentucky, but if I go to Indiana, I cannot pass a bus on the opposite side or get a court date. It's very confusing. I just stick to stopping for a bus unless there is a center (5th lane) or margin.

    • @stefangr1
      @stefangr1 7 місяців тому

      This makes no sense: if drivers on the other side are not required to stop, it is not safe for children to cross the road and traffic on the same side as the bus could continue just as well.

    In Europe, I've never heard a traffic rule like this. School kids take normal buses to the school, they may bike in some states (NL for example), or their parents give them a lift. That kind of yellow school bus is just a curiosity there, some fancy private schools have them imported from the US, and use them for school trips. I grew up in Hungary, I walked and used the normal city buses and my bike to secondary school after I was 12.

      :-) In the street where I was living as a kid, there's a school with a bus stop front of it (with a schedule of buses in every 10-12 minutes in the morning). The stop is located at the opposite side of the road. A few years ago the street was converted into one-way and around the bus stop, it is now narrowed down to prevent cars from overtaking the bus while the children are crossing the street. In the past, fortunately no kids were injured due to the volunteers who always stopped the traffic when the bus stopped from 7:30 to 8:00 allowing the youth safely reaching their destination.

      Variations in laws tend to get the best of me. I got my license in province/state where there has to be at least one full lane between you and and parked emergency vehicle(with lights on) to pass at the posted speed limit. I PAID $496 for learn that this is not the case in many other states and provinces. Now I'm obsessed about shit like this. Whats the school/construction zone limit in the state, whats the school bus law, the emergency vehicle law. Because it's always a hard pill to swallow getting hit with a massive fine. Someone ought to make a guide book on different state, provincial laws so every driver is informed. another reason this can be bad is take the law I got dinged for. Say someone from another place is driving in my province and stops or slows on the far left lane for tow truck on the right hand shoulder of a 6 lane highway as per the law where they live. This results in a collision and the fault is nailed on the person who was only abiding by the laws he/she was taught.

    If the bus is stopped on one road at an intersection, the other SIDE of that road needs to stop. Example: a bus stopped on the intersection of Vermont and Montana. The bus is stopped on Montana. The other side of Montana must stop, but Vermont can continue as long as they don't turn onto Montana.

    Police officers, would you let your small children cross a FOUR LANE Hwy, by themselves, TWICE A DAY to and from the bus? That is what you are saying by suggesting that traffic stops in both directions !!! When, actually, bus drivers ARE REQUIRED to drop the kids on the SAME side of the street where they live on anything GREATER than a TWO lane road. That needs to be clarified.

    • @lovelypuff9
      @lovelypuff9 7 років тому +2

      +Tom harvy We don't really have school buses like this over in Europe. Schools are never really that far away. In the cases we do have school buses they generally have their own turning loop at schools and use regular bus stops elsewhere, they are usually public buses. (Though some schools do run their buses privately, it's reasonably rare except for specialised needs schools, then homepickups are usually done, but not on main roads, so such issues wouldn't really exist.) - So we also don't really have special laws applying to an object that doesn't exist in traffic over here. Additionally, bus bays for public transportation are often used by private school buses as well here (That's legal, the bus bay can technically be used by any Vehicle capable of transporting more then 8 people, even if the regional bus operator won't like it.)

    In Washington State 2024: Only the lane immediately left of the bus must stop, and only when there is not a road division between it and the bus. This is because we don't have children cross anything more than a two-lane, undivided road.
    -Two lane, double yellow, road, both stop.
    -Two lane, 4x yellow or barrier, only occupied lane stops.
    -3+ lane, occupied and immediately left lane must stop.
    That last one confuses many drivers. More lanes stopping is ok, but sometimes people think they cane pass when they shouldn't.

    Interesting. Seeing this from an European point of view a lot of these laws seems to actually put the kids in more danger than if these laws didn't exist in the first place.
    Now hear me out. I personally live in Denmark and have myself used school buses for years, though first of all the school buses over here aren't nearly as distinctive as the ones in America. Ours are just regular city buses which could go into normal route service whenever necessary. American school buses whenever seen in Denmark are more like local tourist attractions because of their distinctive look.
    Ours as you can imagine out of that description doesn't have safety lights and stop signs either. In fact, none of the laws above apply here. Since Shoving away the danger from the kids makes them safer in the current, it makes them more prone to get involved in accidents in the long run since they won't be as familiar with traffic rules in the future and when outside of school. Over here we simply tell our kids to look both ways before crossing the road and that works fine with less accidents per capita than in the U.S.
    Also to some other commenters on this video then most school buses follow the exact same or similar routes to the ordinary buses and pick up and drop off kids at ordinary bus stops. And also Jaywalking isn't taken as seriously over here. Officers won't give you a fine if there isn't a crossing nearby.

    1:36 and do the kids know that to? Better: Teach your children to actively participate in traffic. Teach them to look left and right before crossing. Then you no longer have to flicker with all those lights and cause traffic jams and accidents.

  • @fairladyz32TT
    @fairladyz32TT 10 років тому +5

    Wait hold up. It's a STOP SIGN not a red light. So why are they all waiting?!?! It could become more of a hazard on a given road that doesnt have any stop lights or signs that a school bus pulls over onto causing every car to completely stop on the road (not even ambulances with their emergency lights on have this ability).
    Example: A school bus causes 10 cars to completely stop and wait on a road that doesnt have any stop signs or lights and the 11th car (or any typical driver who hates traffic) decides to go through the middle or opposite lane because it's "clear" which then is more susceptible to hitting a car or kid being that he'll most likely be speeding to get around and not paying attention and of course in the wrong lane.

    youp, when you jump in the front of a truck it is entitely your fault. It' seems you have never been behind the wheel or have any ideea about physics whatsoever. it's the boys fault and more than that, the fault of whomever was in charge of taking care of him.

    I once saw 2 morons drive past the bus going(i'm guessing) about 80 miles. Yes, some of these rules are stupid. Yes, kids SHOULD be taught how and when to cross the street. Let's be honest, No one is going to cross an intersection or a busy street. Kids are left at a corner and from there they walk home. The 4 lane thing is just bizarre.

      Nope, sometimes they do have to cross the street when it's 4 lanes. But where I live, if they aren't going to be crossing the street (4 lanes) then the bus driver will just put the hazards on and no cars on either side have to stop.

    How they have it , its messed up ! How it should be is yellow lights while moving and stopping should be at least 30 seconds. These people have it 2 seconds then. Red and everyone gets a ticket 😂

      Yeah i hate the one about busses stopping at railroads and opening the doors to hear for a train before proceeding cuz of one accident, mind u it was bad and a lot of kids died but it seemed very like an uncommon thing to have happen, ive seen this rule cause a friggen accident instead of preventing it, like if you arent expecting the bus to stop and are behind it you’re gonna rear end the bus because the bus will dead stop anywhere that has railroad markings, its just odd to me

    @0:33 - Need a NEW law to keep IDIOTS from letting animals loose in truck beds!
    LEAVE FIDO AT HOME OR PLACE INTO A PROPER CARRYING CAGE!

    This law is plain stupid. Why in the name of hell would the cars on the opposite side of the road need to stop? It's common sense for a pedestrian to cross the street only when it's free (unless on a crosswalk).

    • @durrrrl3435
      @durrrrl3435 6 років тому

      That's the whole point, stupid!! Traffic has to be stopped so the kids can get across where there is no lights or crosswalk!!

      ***** US and Canada are, as far as I know, the only countries in the world where all traffic has to stop for school buses!

      @ClearAtaraxia 8 років тому +1

      +Koppa Dasao Why? I think this law is really safe for kids. It makes sense. If other countries are not doing it, then they definitely have to follow this method.

    • @koppadasao
      @koppadasao 8 років тому +1

      tjdgo123 Why? So that the governments can earn more money on the car?
      If safety is your concern, why not have the school buses stop outside the road, in protected sidings? That's how busses stop outside America. Not just school busses, but every bus.

    • @miguelparedes2819
      @miguelparedes2819 7 років тому

      Koppa Dasao They wouldn't have to make more money if they just simply followed the rules. I think you have a problem with America.

    Then when a 10 year old boy gets hit by a truck and dies I guess it will be his fault right? Stupid 10 year old walking in front of a truck.
