And the band badly mistreated the guy that everyone agrees is the nicest rock star you'll ever meet! Before the recording of 1984, EVH demanded that Michael not get any credit or royalties from then on, because as EVH said, he (Mike) contributes nothing to the song writing process, which was true, but neither did Alex, but his last name happened to be Van Halen...lol Mind you all 4 members of the band were in the same room while all this transpired! EVH then began to attack Michael's bass playing saying that he (EVH) had to write the bass solos & then teach Michael the solo, again true, but just brutal. Before this "meeting" EVH had gotten Dave to agree to all this & of course Alex did anything his brother told him to do. They already had the paper work drawn up & ready for Michael to sign, & just for good measure, if Michael wouldn't sign, they told him they would kick him out of VH & find another bass player. Those who say Michael was an integral part of the VH sound, I agree 1000% !!! But think about it, Michael was later kicked out of VH to make room for Wolfgang...I love Wolfgang, but Michael's back up vocals just did something special for their songs.
There really was only one ego - Dave. Eddie and Alex ? Where? When? If you're the GOAT of guitar and simply have confidence in yourself and humble, that's no ego.
Michael Anthony did ALL the amazing high harmonies. He was the backbone. Love his joy! Too bad Van Halen couldn’t find the Grace to treat each other well? Rock and Roll?
5:49 made me tear up. It's _so_ wonderful to hear musicans whose heyday was yesteryear, but play with genuine passion and especially, ENERGY later in their career. This performance is one of those rare moment where a modern rendition is every bit as good as a vintage one. I never knew that VH could've made it as trio!
@@Jimmyd_Rocktalk Yes. I don't remember when he stopped using a pick but I don't really hear a difference in attack. I was a bit surprised when I found out.
Michael Anthony. The glue that bound the Van Halen book, IMHO. Still hitting those high notes at sixty freaking nine... And thumping the hell out of that bass.
Love Mike Antony, his singing & playing is incredible. How bout Mike Portnoy? He fucking killed it too. It demonstrates how much of a rhythm there was in VH, & how much Mike locked in.
Thank you so much for sharing this historic video. I’m so happy all of these guys are still active, awesome! Portnoy back in Dream Theater and Michael Anthony going out on tour with Sammy Hagar for the Van Halen Tribute Tour!
He seemed way more comfortable than Ritchie. I know it sounds like I’m dissing him but I’m not, great player, but this guy was just f’n great! Thanks for pointing him out, this guy needs more shout outs!! Have a great holiday everyone & God Bless!!
I still remember when I was 15 years old and we ran to the shopping mall and my friend said you have to hear this band. He pulled out the Van Halen first album from the record bin, and we took it home, he dropped the needle and my life was never the same. Thank you Michael Anthony for making my teenage rock and roll years awesome.
I think Mikey was the backbone of the VH sound. I know about Eddie. But real constant that was ever-present from the beginning right through the Sammy years was Michael's vocals. You could listen to that first album with Sammy and hear Mikey sing and say - WOW this is Van Halen!!

A think Eddie was a cool and good guy but King Alcohol destroys the soul, the body and the mind. It’s a demonic corrosion. May he rest in peace.

I’m guessing the only Sane member of VH back in the day. He played some awesome Bass!
Wow, Mikey can still sing those high range harmonies 45 years later 💕

His voice was well rested all those years
the vocals that carried the band on the road while DLR was prancing like drunk jackass

The most underrated bass player in rock-n-roll! And those harmonies...Awesome! Always loved that guy!
Another “underrated” comment on UA-cam. 🙄
He’s not underrated! Well respected and loved!!!
If anything at this point he's overrated

Talent and musical skill .. a huge portion of the legacy.. Thank you, Michael.
