  • In 2017, Netflix released the show Ultimate Beast Master. This was a game show similar to American Ninja Warrior where contestants had to complete a series of obstacles to become the Ultimate Beast Master. This show featured professional athletes from all over the world, including 2 professional climbers, Heeyong Park and Felipe Camargo. These professional climbers dominated this show and had to compete head-to-head in the finale.

    I was one of the two guys that made for a "boring final round". It wasn't even close what we could do compared to what our climbing friends could do on that wall.
    And yes... trying to climb that with running shoes was... dumb, but we didn't know better.

      I think they should make a copy of the nasty Nick (the toughest obstacle course in the us army) and see how professional athletes do on it. It would be way more fair. There isn't any Rick climbing but there's a ton of rope climbs. Time it because most should make it through and see who does the best on it.

      Congratulations on making it to the final round, that course looked brutal! I don't blame the competitors for the final round being boring, that was definitely the production team's fault.

      Yeah I think that's just poor planning on the organizer's part on that. Obviously the climbers are going to do way better on a climbing wall, like duh. And it looks so hard that anyone without a specific rock climbing focus, or another sport that prioritizes a strong full body while being light enough to be able to pull yourself up, wouldn't be able to finish that, and climbing shoes would certainly be a huge advantage in a challenge like that, along with having practice using climbing shoes.

      I coached and climbed in my younger years and while I never hit the same climbing level as some of my students, you teach them good technique, training your stamina, proper warm ups and stretches, confidence, reading a route, and creative thinking for those routes where you have to figure it out as you go. I love climbing but the greatest pride I ever had when I climbed was watching my students overcome obstacles and reach goals I never was able to myself 😊

If you're not a climber, at least use grippy approach or climbing shoes - they'll make everything soooooo much easier. Having the ability to hold onto small holds and even campus (able to monkey bar without feet essentially) will help significantly for nearly every obstactle.

Never had the pleasure of seeing him set and climb a route there, though. Only on his social media. Dude is legitimately the pride and joy of the brazilian climbing scene, alongside a few others. There was a British spin off of it too, in the usually cringey way that always happens when we copy a US show. Loved the whole absurdly cheesy over-the-top thing, and while the climbers obviously dominated the obstacles that were climber orientated, it had enough of a mix in there for other people to shine and have some impressive moments even if they eventually got filtered out by the climbing obstacles.
    Seeing the climbers just breeze through without even breathing hard on the stuff that eliminated other people was kinda awesome too, to put into context the difference of skill and conditioning.

      And it teaches you to keep calm mentally in very adrenaline rich environments in a way many other sports don't. That's incredibly important. Otherwise I think you summed it up perfectly :)

    V4-V5? The first section maybe, but looking closely at these hold and with a 45 angle, it's clearly more. No matter how athletic you are, you don't flash that without technique.

      If you look at the side profile, the holds are all juggy crimps that they can get their whole finger tips around which means it instantly isn't anything higher than a v4 in my opinion.

    • @Xenmas021
      @Xenmas021 Рік тому

      It's pretty overhung but climbs parallel to the ground are still v4 if all the holds are jugs

    Even in American ninja warrior climbers have an advantage since the later stages are very upper body intensive but in this show it's even more significant since a lot of it is straight up climbing.

    with the instructor falling on that wall it might be because it doest look like they get to wear climbing shoes and from what i understand the shoes make a huge difference in climbing. so without the shoes it becomes more about finger strength, especially with those wall angles, and the pros have enough technique to still power thru without the shoes

    • @Rufgaudas
      @Rufgaudas Рік тому +5

      It makes massive difference. You really struggle to use small footholds with sneakers (it doesn't matter for big jugs though). Though from time to time we do training sessions with sneakers, and during these you tend to use arm strength much more and tire yourself much faster. But still, you can't even properly stand up on a small crimp without a climbing shoes.
