  • Unlike its European neighbors and much of the rest of the world, Sweden has chosen to avoid a lockdown in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. Cato Senior Fellow Johan Norberg explains why Sweden is keeping its country open and allowing so much economic activity, and why its approach may prove to be superior from a public health perspective.

Even the police has started filming, they have been appalled at people s behaviour especially in Stockholm. In my experience social distancing is a joke nearly everywhere. You can make it more difficult. If the professional authority does not assist you. In Germany the government just instructs the health authority what advice it wants to receive.

As a swede I do like our approach, but it's not all that different in results as media seems to portray it, nor is it the only approach. Reduced mobility and less social contact has slowed the spread (also achieved with the harder lockdowns - and they're now figuring out how to transition); but ideally you would want to contain and trace the infected. In sweden we tried that for ~1.5 months, but saw communal spread and for that we did not have enough testing capacity to carry on.

So I live in Sweden and my father works by helping people who are over 70 years old and he unfortunately caught the virus in some way and we don’t even know how. He was very careful and followed every recommendation out there. He went to the hospital and the doctors told him he only had lung inflammation but two weeks later he started having severe breathing problems and went to the hospital again and was diagnosed with covid-19 but the only thing they told him was go home. He’s had it for almost a month but has been going out not knowing about being infected until last week just because the doctors told him he had a lung inflammation without even looking at it carefully
My point is this isn’t doing much imagine some have caught the virus from my father when he didn’t even know he had the virus and didn’t even show any signs of being sick and when he started the doctors weren’t careful enough and didn’t even examine him from the beginning.

It is really not that different in Sweden.
They have some schools closed down because too many teachers have been sick and some families just keep they kids away from school. So even 40% are away from school.
Sweden is also doing some other measures like not letting too many people into the store at the same time and sharing disinfectants etc.
So it is not like they just live like nothing happened, what Britain tried to do.
And Nordic countries just simply do not have that many people in one area and do not come that close to other people nor kiss and hug others when they see friends, so Swedish people are always social distancing.
Many people just sit inside and play with their things instead of going out, but it can change along with the season.
Lets see how Finland is doing after they open all classes without e-learning option any longer next week or so. It may become worse than Sweden quickly especially because kids from poor areas in Sweden avoid the school but kids from heavily affected areas can no longer avoid the school in Finland and those areas have already nearly 10 people per 1000 people in the hospital. Well those areas have some schools, which have even majority of students from Somalia and those get the severe form of illness for some reason.
Areas on the other side of the city have had only 2-3 severe sick people per 1000. Those numbers Finland gives come only from hospitals as only severely sick people are being tested or so. A regular person can not just walk, somewhere to get tested, so you can understand that those numbers do not have people in elderly homes, people in home care even if it was severe as older people will not get transferred to a hospital, but a nurse goes to them so they are not included in the numbers of Helsinki university hospital area in Finland beside Sweden. I hear something that things happen the similar way in Sweden and that is why the real numbers are much much higher especially because the older you are, the higher the percentage.
In SARS there are two hills in the graph, the older peoole and among the 20 year olds. The young people can get the sars-phenomenon, that it is hard for them to breath suddenly. Middle aged people may only feel some pressure in their lungs plus some burning.
The scary statistic is, that if you research the earlier pandemics, those recovered never really recovered and got sick over and over again as their lungs were more vulnerable and could barely walk 200 meters.
That is why there is no sense in the idea of trying to get the disease and this 'group protection' or something unless you want to get pain and various problems the rest of your life.

@Clement Smith actually the video is incorrect, they are following all the required things like wearing mask, sanitizer, physical distancing, no large gathering more than 50, etc.
But they don't want people to stay at home, do all your chores but also follow the required precautions to avoid covid. Especially Older people are on lockdown for their own sake.
You may say its dumb but in few months or weeks you will be doing the same. Whenever your country opens the lockdown, the virus will spread unless you lock them for 1 year and wait for vaccine.
So in the end every country on the earth will follow what sweden was doing from the start or you can kill your economy.
It may look like that the Sweden have many fatalities early on but in the end just like sweden every country will reach herd immunity, some may reach early like sweden and some will reach later. So currently sweden may have 6th highest death rate but when other countries starts easing lockdown the fatalities will rise.

Lockdown is just slowing and delaying the inevitable.

Worldwide lock downs didn't occur due to a model, it was due to solid evidence and responsible Governments everywhere took action. Lock down is awful and there is a terrible liberty and economic price to pay, but if we don't isolate the virus the long-term ultimate $ price across the world is likely to be apocalyptic and the financial repercussions of a massive loss of life will hurt worse. Less tax payers will hurt economies. Sick or weakened populations will hurt economies. This virus has already mutated 3 times in less than 6 months. About half of my former high school friends have lost someone in their family. Those who resulted positive to the virus where very ill for at least 2 weeks, some up to 4 weeks of very high fever, difficulty breathing, muscles ache and vomit. Some fairly young people coming out of hospital are still experiencing breathing issues, extreme tiredness and a number of other mild to not so mild symptoms. The consequences of ventilation can be devastating. This is no joke.

However, the first thing Sweden did, long before panic started, was to start buying up supplies and expanding the maximum capacity in ICU. Some problems occured when Germany refused to export medical supplies already ordered by us, but eventually it went through. ICU beds has been in place for some time, increased from 1200 beds to 3600 and more may be introduced later.
With that said, I *don't* think the surge in infections that occurred and started the spread in Sweden after the "sports break" holiday (when a lot of people went to Italy to ski) is the sole reason. It did spread a lot faster and sooner here in Sweden than in Finland and Norway, but after two months that's probably a minor reason to our high infection rate rather than a major one.
We most likely would've had a harder time doing a lock down and stopping the spread like Finland and Norway but of course we would've had much fewer cases if we went with the same strategy as they did.
Personally I'm not sure what I think is the best strategy or Sweden, and I don't think that there is a perfect strategy that works for every country.
We're very much alike each other here in the Nordic Countries, culturally wise (putting the usual rivalry aside), but our economies are different. And those who say economy doesn't matter when lives is at stake: You do know there's a risk of starvation and global depression right? Long lasting (economic) depressions may cost a lot of lives, especially if we see starvation because of lost crops during lockdowns.

*Sweden's approach is pragmatic given the fine existing public healthcare and elder-care infrastructure that exists in the country* . While reliable data concerning the human immunoresponse to the SARS COV-2/COVID-19 antigen remains forthcoming, early data suggests that 80% of COVID-19 carriers are asymptomatic, demonstrating no manifest ailment following infection, and a mortality rate similar to that of influenza among a populace with no preexisting condition that might compromise their immunological response to infection, there is credible epidemiological research by doctors Knut Wittkowski [1] and John Ioannidis [2] [3] to suggest that "social distancing" measures will confound the opportunity for the broad development of the antibodies necessary to achieve "herd immunity" and prolong the crisis or foster conditions where the virus might again return. By focusing resources on elderly persons and those with compromised immune systems, Sweden's approach is likely the more pragmatic solution.

This is just the first wave of the virus that is killing not just the old and susceptible but regular people are dying also in large cites that are hot zones because of overpopulation . Take NYC for instance . There have been more deaths in NYC than most country's . A vaccine is the only cure . No one is gonna be immune once it mutates by next fall or winter (Praying that it doesn't happen) . Sweden is like a small town that is not realizing that it eventually will affect them worse by not following the guidelines . This coming from a country that legalized euthanasia .

@@sharha830, vaccines only work to the extent that natural immunity works. If natural immunity is not possible, a vaccine won't be possible, either. If the virus mutates, that will mean either developing immunity to it each time you get it again or taking different vaccines for it (new ones every year or whatever like the flu shot). We are much better off facing the virus and attempting to develop natural immunity now, instead of waiting for what will be a rushed and risky vaccine. This can be done in a safer way by sheltering the vulnerable while low-risk groups return to more normal living.

@@sharha830 Hi Sha Rha, Despite the availability of the influenza vaccine, 80,000 Americans died of influenza-related illness contracted over the winter months of 2017-2018 (See Stat News (AP Article, Sept 26, 2018) | CDC: 80,000 people died of flu last winter in U.S., highest death toll in 40 years [ www.statnews.com/2018/09/26/cdc-us-flu-deaths-winter/ ]) with some 30 - 60 million contracting the virus.
The flu vaccine is not an inoculation nor is it a cure, but a micro-dose of the influenza antigen (the CDC makes an (educated) guess as to which strains are likely to emerge in any given flu season) to encourage the human body to develop antibodies to the virus. The effectiveness of the flu vaccine is generally lower than 50% (40.25% average over the past 16 years). There is evidence to suggest that repeated influenza vaccination further reduces the effectiveness. While children tend to be the largest demographic of carriers/transmitters, healthy children tend to be the most resilient to the mal-affects of the virus due to their healthy immune system. Most healthy persons, in fact, are more than capable of fending off influenza as well as SARS COV-2/COVID-19. 80% of those contracting both influenza and COVID-19 are asymptomatic - demonstrating no ill affects. Among the remaining 20% the majority manifest modest, manageable, and non-life-threatening symptoms (i.e. fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle and joint pain, headache, coughing, mild sinus or bronchial infection), while fewer still contract viral or bacterial pneumonia that, while treatable, may lead to respiratory failure, heart failure and death. The mortality statistics attributed to influenza-related illness vary in relation to the health condition of the population and age demographic, but generally fall below 1%. Recent research by scientists at Stanford University found that "people under 65 years old and not having any underlying predisposing conditions accounted for only 0.3%, 0.7%, and
1.8% of all COVID-19 deaths in Netherlands, Italy, and New York City" (See "Population-level COVID-19 mortality risk for non-elderly individuals overall and for nonelderly individuals without underlying diseases in pandemic epicenters" -- John P.A. Ioannidis, MD, DSc, Cathrine Axfors, MD, PhD, Despina G. Contopoulos-Ioannidis, MD [ www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.05.20054361v1.full.pdf ]).
Like coronavirus 229E and OC43 - responsible for the common cold - and influenza, SARS COV-2 / COVID-19 is likely here to stay. Rather that invest in vaccines whose impact affects the human biochemical diversity in unpredictable ways, some of which have been know to manifest in neurological disorder and even death, I would rather see an investment in efforts to improve or enhance the overall general health of the population. Stress is known to impair the human immunoresponse system, even contributing to risk of respiratory ailments such as asthma, and increasing the risk of contracting certain forms of cancer. Money is better spent in efforts to reduce or eliminate stress, particularly that caused by economic stress, which is also the major case of familial dysfunction and disintegration. Rather than chase a vaccine that is likely to repress the human immunoresponse system (as with the case of the chicken pox vaccine whose consequence leads to shingles later in life), I would rather see improvements to education and regulation to better address the need for cleanliness and prevention as well as universal health coverage (Medicare For All) to facilitate early detection and treatment of ailment.
I would encourage you to watch/listen to those references I had cited in my earlier comment. I you don't have the patience or time to dedicate to this, please consider watching and listening to the following 4 minute statement by Dr. John Ioannidis - the lead researcher of the paper cited earlier in this comment:

It was never meant to reduce the total number of people that ultimately get infected - although that seems to be a common belief, mostly due to lousy communications from our various governments.

@MR J "testing herd immunity" How many times do we have to tell you that it's not even a part of the strategy? Immunity after being infected is something we hope for, but herd immunity is not what we're trying to achieve with this strategy. Trump may say it, but it doesn't make it so.
Politicians is not to meddle in these matters in Sweden and the strategy is to keep our heads and go by facts alone.
Nursing homes wasn't in lock down yet when it started spread there and those deaths make up for more than 42% of the 2k death toll. Also, the nowadays privatized nursing homes failed miserably, being too cheap to give the employees the right equipment, causing the virus to spread rapidly. The government is now stepping in, forcing testing and use of equipment, but in a lot ways the damage has already been done.
Without that extremely sad and indefensible failure the death toll would be slightly higher than that of Denmark.
It's awful that it happened, and I'm not sure we're doing the right thing right now, but the numbers always quoted about Sweden is not comparable to those of other countries, at least not in the way people use them.
PS. Sadly enough, you also have to take into account what shut down economy would do in the long run as UN and other organizations start to warn the world of starvation ahead. Also, the economy in Sweden is very different from the countries around it. All these things matter.

Why did this "experiment" might make sense for Sweden - here a few points to take in consideration:
    - Only 2 to 3 countries connected by land (Norway, Finland and maybe Denmark if you count the Öresund Bridge)
    - Land border to the north east only to Finland's north (less population density and traffic there)
    - Land border to Denmark only by one bridge (less traffic)
    - Every other country did close the border (this did minimize the border traffic)
    - A population of about 10 million on a land mass of about 450.000 square km (e.g. Germany has 8 times the population and only 360.000 square km)
    - Not as many and busy travel hub like other countries (numbers of traveler 2015 nation wide about 6,5 Mio - New York 2016 have been about 10 times of this)
    - Only 3 big and dense cities (Stockholm, Malmö and Göteborg)
    - Population who trusts in government and science (reasonable behavior in general)
Is it possible to compare the result and judge based on this circumstances, to "learn" from Sweden as an example for other countries for the future?
I think we have to be very careful to do so. Nobody knows what would have happen if other countries wouldn't have closed down - how the virus would have spread in Sweden and how many death would have been there.
Furthermore, the density of population is very different in most of the other countries. What might work in Sweden doesn't necessarily work in other countries.
Herd immunity might be necessary in general but the circumstances have to allow this and the health systems of a country must be able to handle the cases.
And nobody knows how many wouldn't have get the virus with or without lockdown. Who wants to decide how many lifes a herd immunity is worth such an experiment?! How many could have survived if Sweden would have done the same like other countries? Nobody knows.

I can understand some parts of our stratedy but I am also worried. Since not everyone if following the recommendations here in Sweden. I have seen many bars and restaurants that are filled with people and no space in between. They get warnings but that´s about it. And now with the temperature rising outside I see masses of people gathering. There are also those who cough in their hands regardless, and many elderly are roaming around. I know some who have gotten infected and almost died.. and once you experience that you start thinking even more about social distancing and being careful. If you have family members and close ones with healthproblems it´s important that you are careful when you are out. Hearing from nurses and doctors at the hospitals here also makes you realize how important it is that everyone follow the recommendations. As we call it ”recommendations” here people wont take it just as seriously as rules to go by. Today two guys stood behind me in line at a grocerystore but stood very close to me. I asked them politely to keep more distance and pointed at the sign which told them to do so. They moved even closer to me and said ”then why are you out at all?”. ”Well because I need food (for my dad), we need to keep a distance.” And then they kept bumping into me and nobody did/said anything. Then when I were picking up my groceries one of them fake coughed in my face. This is just a horror example though. If you REMIND people to keep a distance, most people will. It just seems people don´t always keep it in mind here, because they are young and healthy and not afraid to catch the virus themselves. I wish EVERYONE here followed the recommendations, but they don´t ❤️ whenever I go groceryshopping there are some people who just don´t care. And it probably never will change, so we´ll have to deal with it...I wish a vaccine comes fast.

Im not saying that the swedish strategy is wrong. As you say we have implemented a social distance without using a forced lockdown and I agree that a lockdown can possibly have serious effects on peoples health and the economy in the long term. But we have failed to protect our elderly and other riskgroups. As of now 75% of all elderly homes in Sweden have virus and we have a very high death rate at the moment even though we have implemented alot of social distancies.
    Why. Here are my thoughts:
    1. We stoped tracing the virus from aboad travelers to early, we didnt put people with no symptoms arriving from contagious areas for one or two weeks in quaranteen. This gave us a quicker sociaty spread before we had time to prepare the elderly care.
    2. We stoped testing the population, due to lack of testing materials, we only tested hospitaliesed patients. Then about one month later we started to test nurses and doctors working at the hospitals. We never tested staff, nurses and doctors etc, working at the elderly homes or with the ”hemtjänst” the home care staff.
    3. It has taken about three month to distribute protective equipment to to staff working with the elderly. The carehomes in Uppsala got them this week, 19th-24th of april. The nurses and undernurses working with these patients have to work very close to these patients. A sick patient with dementia doesnt know not to cough staff in the face etc. Stressed and under staffed workes need to quickly move from one elderly caretaker to the next. Not only risking getting the disease but to spread it to the next patient.
    4. The swedish ministry of health have still not acknowledged asymptomatic spread of this virus. The testing capacity in Sweden is still very low. A top of that the regional, communal, byrocracy regarding health care for the elderly is in dissaray. It takes half a day to get a patient in the elderly homes tested because you have to having to call so many different instances, nobody knows who has what authority.
    5. Since alot of elderly people dont get tested, either due to lack of testing gear or because its very hard to test them (imagine a patient with dementia being tested by a nurse, sticking up a wooden quetip far up their nose. They can get very violent and its against the law to constrain them.) Alot of covid-19 patients dont register as being sick or contagious.
    6. Alot of fare gone elderly patients cant be treated in intensive care because it will probably due more harm than good for them, but there are still alot of elderly patients in homes not that far gone in alzheimers or other diseases that would greatly benefit from hospital care. Persons that might have 5-10 years of decent life left to live. Alot of them are as of now being denied hospital care. That moral choise, that has been experienced as devastating in countries like Italy and Spain, is already being made here in Sweden. Its also something to consider why the hospitals in Sweden are still coping and not being overflowed with cases.
The health ministry have acknowledge the problem with getting the virus to so many elderly homes several weeks ago. Back then we had the virus in one third of the care homes in Stockholm. Has anything happened to stop the spread? Mayby, but I havent seen that happened. Sweden has to accept that we have failed on some parts of our strategy and act quickly to correct them as best we can. We can prevent the spread to other regions with alot less infected people. People in sweden are either very pro the swedish strategy or very against. It seems there are no middle ground? In sweden the elderly in care homes and the staff working with them have a fairly low status in the society. Alot of these people are suffering silently in Sweden. The average person in Sweden dont know or dont care about this. The elderly in swedish care homes are no longer part of the society.

Our elderly care facilities are home to those who are OLD and sick. And I feel like on the international stage they are being thought of more as retirement homes, which have more communal purposes and less medical care needs. In my experience you’re not in a Swedish care home unless you require a lot of aid! Making the “co-morbidides” not just high but HIGH. And feel on that particular point the facts are not being compared accurately with other countries.

@@Benzknees Obviously you haven't paid attention, we are slowing the spread until a vaccine can be created, that would provide some herd immunity if enough people are vaccinated. Also don't start with anti-vac nonsense.
Also lowing the total infections by lock down and strict social distancing means government and health will have the ability to track a certain number of small outbreaks, isolate them, contact trace and test that would mean certain rules could be relaxed and hopefully cases can be quickly dealt with.
That should have been done from the start and it wasn't. It was left too late which meant that the NHS/Government was unable to track down cases and do contact tracing of all cases. Hence community spread.

    • @Notrollism
      @Notrollism 4 роки тому

@@Benzknees Proof that the NHS would have been overrun? Are you a complete simpleton? Other countries health services were overrun; Italy, Spain, Iran to name a few. You could say New York was getting overrun. Imagine if they didn't put in these lock down measures at all. Do you expect that they would have seen a drop in cases regardless? That is a completely assumption. It all boils down to simple math. How many people get infected from a single infected person. If 1 person infects 3 they infect 3 more. Which is likely the case before social distancing. Then you can see how numbers can quickly reach a health systems capacity..
Also some cases can need ventilators for several weeks.
Finally I will say, its easy to look around the UK now and go, ohh only 20k deaths. That isn't that bad really. (sarcasm)
If it was that bad more people would have died (more sarcasm).
But the reason we have 20k deaths opposed to the modeled 150k deaths had we done nothing. Is due to the rules in place.
And this is the funny part. People don't seem to think that its as much as a problem as its made out to be...
Well it would have been, had we done nothing.
Now do I think lockdown was the only way? I guess time will tell, but we didn't social distance early enough, so the virus was already well rooted so starting social distancing that late may not have been enough.

Also (on its knees) is essentially what over run would be but worse. This whol flattening the curve and keeping it within NHS capacity is exactly what I am talking about. It depends on how you look at the numbers and understand the geography of the country. Having lived in Swedens busiest city with a population that's only recently reached 1million, being there you notice architecture and layout of the city benefits social distancing approaches much better than others for example: New York, Hong Kong or London. Swedish people are very astute when it comes to communities and wellbeing of others which will also support a slow down of the virus spread as mentioned in this video, people there also tend to listen to what's suggested much like people would in Singapore. A great number of Swedish people also have summer houses (If not someone in the family does) which are in very remote places allowing them to exercise social distancing comfortably without government lockdowns allowing WFH away from others. (Why not if you have the option) The total numbers in Sweden are not as high as other countries and they have a world-class healthcare system to support any cases, however, you have to consider the countries full population and death rate so far: Currently (as of when this comment was written) Sweden has a death rate of 0.018% countries population, USA has a 0.014%, UK has 0.027% and Germany has 0.006%. Looking at these figures with numbers still rising we are going to see higher percentages, there is always some form of spin involved. We're all going to learn from this every country has different circumstances. I do like that some nations such as Sweden don't shy away from talking about this or their forwardness regarding approaches they are looking to adopt. Stay safe everyone!!

I'm normally proud to say that I live in the UK but I'm appalled at the UK government's approach to COVID-19; our citizens are, effectively, under house arrest - a human rights violation!
Sweden's citizens are being recognised as adults who are capable of taking responsibility for their own actions.
What if the human body possesses innate intelligence and is capable of self-regulation and healing without medicine? What if, daylight, fresh air, outdoor exercise, social interaction, sleep, lowered anxiety, healthy eating of traditional wholefoods, meditation and fasting, all strengthen our immune system.
What if Sweden's citizens are building immunity by their social activities. What if their resulting mental health, from having freedom, is better than here in the UK.
When borders between neighbouring countries are opened again, those Swedes who've survived, should, by then, have some immunity to COVID-19.
As of 2020-04-27, published figures show deaths from COVID-19, expressed as a percentage of total population, to be as follows: Sweden 0.02% - UK 0.03%.

I'm not trivialising anyone's death but deaths from respiratory problems in the UK in winter 2017/2018 were 0.026% of UK population. (Data source: ONS)
Hang-on, if lockdown is justified, how come the UK is currently doing slightly worse than Sweden?
It looks as though Sweden may emerge from this relatively unscathed. Time will tell.

Not realy, i asked airport of Sweden in January why they are not adding health sevurity checks or closing and they said no governmental agency told them to.
Its not a case of closing or opening with the people, its a case of being afraid of using necessary security measures because ghe government is afraid of either being potrayed as dictatorial, or losing economical benefits of a non lockdown over lives. In this case they chose economy over lives.
Second this video is from 15th of April where he claims its becoming "stable" on cases.. we are now i 21th of April and cases are coming in either at around and below 475 or much higher at 700+.
Please dont belive in everything he is saying as its only situational and not longterm.
      Sweden is deteriorating.

If restaurants and bars that doesn't follow the recommendations about only serve people at table and don't hold the minimum distance between tables, can and will be shut down of local health care governmental agencies. So yes, they will go.
A good presentation here. even if I don't agree with much The Cato Institute stand for. :-)

@Marius Periwinkle so, in your view, sweden is doing something novel, and therefore dangerous, while those quarantining the healthy are doing so, based on tried and true methods?

@@paddleed6176 you don't know that, you only believe that. just compare swedens deaths/million to italy, france, spain. They have way higher fatalities.

Yes, this is a very matured and responsible way of handling this crisis, but it also largely depends on the trusting relationship between citizens and the politicians and the overall political system. I hope the world take notice of how Sweden is handling the crisis so effectively and learn lessons that would help the world in dealing such crisis more effectively in the future.

Your country had some common sense. You don’t need to be completely open nor completely closed.
the fact is that the rest of the world relied on some incredibly wrong/flawed assumptions on mortality rates to do the shut downs. It is now proven to be a gross error.

I dont get why people are obsessed with infected numbers this year, Around 600,000 die from flu every year, no one counts that. This is one of the most gruesome level of human rights violation in the history. But the sad part is most people are supporting it. I wish i was swedish

The world’s reaction to this incident will be in every statistics text book in future. This has been a huge mistake, because people allowed the media to do the statistics analysis on their behalf. The media made people panic, so they all begged their governments to take away their freedoms and prosperity. What dumbasses we are.
