      @@alainav4537 The only test I've done so far is to drain the battery while filming. Which was done in my living room so no outside temp influence. It does get hot, somewhat hot to the touch but that may actually benefit me. I typically use my GoPro for scuba diving or skiing, both conditions are quite cold so perhaps the fact the camera runs hot, it'll stay functional longer due to the temp balance with the outside temp I'm in? Well, the wind noise cancellation is great on the Hero 8, but it sounds a bit muffled tbh. The sound on the Hero 7 is may more crisp and true to life. I think people underestimate the importance of sound for an immersive experience, especially with POV footage. So even with a bit of windnoise here and there, I'd still prefer the audio of the Hero 7. Picture quality is definitely superior on the Hero 8. Stabilization is pretty much the same, but it works in a wider array of settings with the Hero 8. If you're a professional content creator, you probably wanna upgrade. If you're just the average Joe like me and you already own a Hero 7, I wouldn't bother.

    • @enjinnine3074
      @enjinnine3074 4 роки тому +3

      Agree. The frame grab comparisons can be misleading, because these are not the differences in detail you will see on UA-cam when each video frame changes. I think these differences mostly disappear when "moving" footage is compressed by UA-cam so differences between 100 mb/s and 78 mb/s will be hard to differentiate. I don't think I could pick out the Hero 8 footage footage in a blind test on UA-cam.

    As someone who shot primarily on GoPro's when getting started on UA-cam.. The Hero 7 Black has many problems with overheating and being in direct sunlight. My Hero 8 got here this week, I'll keep posted on outdoor performance, but so far it's been great! Many upgrades, like Slow-Motion in full stabilization. Audio and Video upgrades when the attachments come out in December as well, this is going to be good!

    The Hero 4 footage looked the best to me, and I thought the audio was better as well. It is often said that in the GoPro development labs the Hero 4 is held up as the standard to which the newer cameras aspire. They may be right. And another thing where the Hero 4 shines is longevity. Mine is still going, and so is the H4 of everyone I know who kept theirs in use.

    I prefer the footage with the hero 4 on the Evo gimbal as it is more immersive (I use the same set up with a battery pack that lasts all day). That said, I agree that there are situations where a simpler/more weather resistant set up would win out (hero 7 or 8). I don't even have a hero 7, so for me, I think I would buy the hero 8, but if I already had a hero 7, it doesn't seem worth it to upgrade to a newer model just yet. Hmm. On the fence. But that's because I'm already sitting on 2 GP7's, a 3+, 2x gimbals, have a Skydio 2 drone on order, just bought DR Studio, upgraded my PC, etc., etc. I feel like the GP8 is (purposely) a ...."vloggers" camera. The accessories for the mic and light and selfie view screen are indicative of that. That's not a bad thing. It's going to be a great B-roll camera by being able to jump between all the different presets. Although that might lead to more "cliche" shots among the masses (like filters and LUTs do). Also not a bad thing, really--people will be able to capture more and take them out of regular point-and-shoot mode, encouraging people to think more about their storyboards and shot options. 👍
    The clincher for MTB POV I think would be (for me) the detail and audio. It's all about the expedited workflow from the creator standpoint, and watch-ability from the viewer standpoint. I will take a camera with a "flatter" audio but NO wind noise any day! 😁
    Were you using the Hyper 2.0 with Boost setting? It crops the frame more, but again, i'll take a more stable pic with a bit of crop...over some unusable shaky footage because my gimbal failed or because I forgot the stupid cover thing that wrecks my thumb when i try to open it (anybody else?!?). 😢
    All that being said, still want want one, lol. The other half doesn't care for the gimbal, and has been wearing the 7 in chesty mode anyways, may as well use the GP8 and not have to worry about a windslayer. Also, I have been using the MotoRadds (not getting paid!) helmet chin mount and it works fantastic. I skipped the zip tie/GP mount phase and went to this. The 4 had great motion blur. I have a 6 so possibly worth the upgrade. A wind slayer on the 7 could give better sound. Surely Sharpness only important for cinematic and blog footage. High speed sports need a little blur and less sharpening. If you Shot in flat for both 7 & 8 and colour graded. you probably wouldn’t see much difference apart from a little more stable.

I'm sending it back again! Ironically, I have an older one that I've beat to hell that still works fine, though it has some occasional high-pitched noises coming from the motors. First, thanks for the awesome video... Second, I think what this comes down to is if you already own a GoPro or not. If you own a 5, 6 or 7, it makes almost zero sense to move to the 8. 5 or 6 owners should probably grab a 7 on clearance before they are gone to protect their accessory investment. If you're new, the 8 is the way forward - I just think GP mis-stepped this big by not having the "mods" ready to roll at launch. Still after watching, I'm not sure which way I'm leaning. I'm new to GP's, but the 8 has a few features missing that will be tough to cover without those mod packs.

  • @huntstyle

    Great comparison, Ryan! You should put the Hero 4 + gimbal side-by-side with the Hero 8 footage. I have no doubt... in general, the Hero 8 has better video quality, BUT with the EIS, you get those moments where everything becomes blurred. Obviously that doesn't happen when the stabilization is coming from the gimbal instead. And while the Hero 8's audio quality is definitely improved over the Hero 7, once you put the Hero 4 on at the end, you can tell that the Hero 8 is STILL not nearly the same audio quality as the Hero 4! The Hero 4 just sounded so much more clear & crisp.

    Nice test man. I just ordered an 8 today because of the $100 trade in and an AMEX $60 deal. That gave me an 8 with a spare battery for sub $300 and I like that! I'll be honest, that higher rate might look a little better but those crazy large file sizes are not worth dealing with for me. Heck, I only shoot in 2.7 to keep things manageable. I'd have to start to upgrade to much other stuff to even support that feature and file sizes. So to me is the 8 worth it over the 7....? Not at full price. It's got a few things but nothing crazy. Thanks for the review! Some great comparisons and like others agree that the audio is more natural sounding on the Gp7. The GP8 at 100bps definitely makes a difference to the video quality so I guess 2 steps forward on video, one step back on audio.
    Just one very important detail that wasn’t mentioned was the mods... a huge reason for choosing the GP8 for my daughter was the flip screen mod. My daughter enjoys her vlogging, the new flip screen mod along with excellent video capabilities puts the GP8 right along side the latest vlogging cameras. The flip screen mod is an add on for a considerable amount of money but it can be added to the next birthday / Christmas list.

    I thought the colors were just a tad better on the 8, but then when you throw in the color graded footage of the 7 that looks way better. I imagine you can do the same on the 8. I felt the 8 was slightly better at keeping details despite the stabilization smoothing effect. But then the Hero 4 on a gimbal was way better than the other two - the video looses that foggy look in the trees, which I realized is all the small branches getting smoothed over. The Hero 4 has much crisper, truer representation because it's stabilizing the camera, rather than video "stabilization" of a shaking camera. It's hard to overcome physics.
    Can the "hypersmooth" stabilization be turned off and the Hero 8 put on a gimbal? How would that look? Because then for someone starting from scratch it might still be worth starting with a Hero 8 and adding a gimbal later as they start wanting to up the quality, while keeping the Hero 8 benefits (waterproofness, better mic...). Because, out of the box, it looks like the Hero 8 is going to be sufficient for most people to experiment with and get usable footage.

    Hey! If you test stabilisation you should consider having both cameras lenses mounted symetrically in the same vibration points. You see, go pro 8 lens is closer to the chin so when you tilt your head the go pro 8 lens moves less distance than the go pro 7 mounted further from your chin. And less distance means less vibration in the same situation.
