Why I bend and twist shimpaku junipers - how to bend and twist bonsai stock for better trees

- I’ve had feedback about why I bend and twist my shimpaku junipers like this. Here is a video explaining why I do so. Creating better trees to work on in the future is the simple answer. You need to do the work early to have the material for future year to come.

Got myself a Shimpaku finally so lm watching your videos for guidance. Like those bends David, ty
Very interesting and informative. Thanks
You and Sam doeke, Aussie bonsai bloke should do a colab some time! No idea if you guys are even close to each other at all. It'd be cool to see though!
Ryan H haha would be great but think he is in Adelaide and I am in Melbourne.
@@Bonsaiworx yeah I figured you guys weren't close. It was worth a shot lol
Hopefully you see this. How long do you leave the wire on the tree before taking it off
When it starts to cut in. There is no specific time limit. Just have to keep checking it but I wouldn’t check it for at least 6 months now.
Hi David, do you have a video on how you turned a twisted juniper like this into a bonsai with shari and jin. I have twisted my juniper shimpaku but I am stuck. I wanna initial style and I have no idea where to go from here. Thanks. Love your channel
It takes a while to develop the next phase. I will have to hunt through the 450 videos on my channel to find something. I did create a playlist of shimpaku videos so hopefully can find something in there.
Thanks david
Hi David. Terrific videos mate - and almost 1 a day - sometimes 2!! Really enjoy watching - always educational and inspires me to have a go at some of your techniques on my trees. Frustrating that I’m in the U.K. and will have to wait til our spring!! Non-bonsai question: there are always loads of birds chattering away in the background - usually parrots but today I thought I heard a diamond dove too? Do you have some aviaries? Can you do a video so we can have a look? Cheers mate and keep up the good work. Andy
Andy Johnson thanks for the positive comments. I don’t actually have aviaries. For some reason there are lots of birds in the area and they always seem to hang around when I am doing a video. Might try and film them next time.
Hey David, I was wondering if you could do a mini series on how to trim different species, mainly conifers. I still have absolutely no idea where to cut pine, juniper or douglas fir branches. Im always fearing ruining the pad or branch by promoting dieback.
Backyard Arsenal I’ve done a few videos on how I trim different trees. I’ve done some pine videos on bud selecting in autumn however the audio isn’t the best. I will be doing more on pines in December which is when I candle prune my black pines. What’s coming up shortly is a series on deciduous tree pruning and what I do to them in spring.
@@Bonsaiworx thanks! I'll check it out
When is the best time of the year to do this type of bending on a shimpaku?
I can do this anytime of year as long as the wire is applied correctly
Can you split the trunks on these to bend when you have a thicker trunk?
I tried this yesterday and cracked two tree trunks, one was pencil thick and the other was a little bigger . There is still tissue connecting so I left them and hopefully they don't entirely die off. This is a great video, do you have any tips on bending without breaking? Is it a matter of just using thicker wire than you think?
This is the first video of yours I have seen, very good. Where are you located? How long would you leave the wire on the tree? I am in Brisbane Qld.
Geoff Curtis I’m in Melbourne. Probably leave wire for 6 months. I would then rewire again and keep twisting the trunk.
David your little trees are cool. Do you train any of your garden trees into bonsai?
No, I only really have a courtyard and no room to grow garden trees.
@@Bonsaiworx Thanks for getting back.
Hi David. Very informative. Do you allow for the wire to bite in and roll over?
Shaahid Ally I do let the wire bite but not to rollover the wire. The wire is there to get the movement first. Later on I would create the Shari and deadwood when the tree is older.
@@Bonsaiworx thank you for the response
Question David. When you do a heavy root prune and repot what is your suggested after care? Thanks
Matt Brennan I would only do heavy work like that early spring. I really just leave the tree alone and let it recover. I make sure it tied into the pot and very stable. Then I just leave on the benches and treat like all my other trees.
Thanks David. I’ve read where they should be kept in the shade for several weeks. Is that something you’d recommend?
Matt Brennan as I repot in early spring, we have very mild conditions in Melbourne so I don’t need to protect from snow or freezing conditions. In early spring the more sun I get the better. It’s all about your growing conditions.
Hi David, where do you usually go in Melbourne to get stock shimpakus? The only place I've seen available are BonsaiArt, Bonsai Sensation and Conifer Gardens Nursery. Am wondering whether are there any other nurseries selling them.
Mark Yee I do grow my own from cutting and air layers. Only Baloc bonsai might have some.
Thank you for the info David. ( And you seem to have some Vietnamese writing on your shirt? )
Hoàng Kỳ yes I have a few Vietnamese shirts. I went to Vietnam last year for holiday and bought them. Love Vietnam and my partner she is Vietnamese too.
@@Bonsaiworx Thank you David.
