  • Here I take 6 of my shimpaku stock junipers that I have grown over the years and transform them into their final shapes for growing as bonsai. I decided to set their future structure on these future shohin sized shimpaku junipers. With imagination, wire and lots of bending, 6 very nicely shaped mini bonsai are the result.
    Please note: if you located in Melbourne, I provide bonsai services. Reach out to me on my email address at bonsaiworx@gmail.com if you would like to discuss you bonsai needs further.

    Great work again...good to see individuality in all the trees, so easy for me as a beginner to only see 1 shape

    Thanks David, the first tree, on a longer time scale, I would go for some very gentle curves. And continue to thicken it. Over time the illusion of more movement can be added with sone creative Shari, using the live vein in citrate to dead wood. Probably in a literati style.
    However what you saw in it also turned out very nicely. There’s always so many paths to take when styling and developing 🙂

    Now I want to go get more trees... no idea where I'll put 'em.

    Interesting end results. I've heard many people say that as a beginner, you shouldn't do more than one 'big' thing every year to avoid stressing the trees, do you agree with this? I know you often do many big things in one go, but maybe big pruning + wiring isn't the hardest part for the tree, I assume a repot would be pushing it, after such an ordeal? Ty for all the videos, great learning material.

      It’s about timing for me and the health of the tree. I usually do this work on autumn after a strong growing season. Only on healthy trees. Yes I only will do styling and then let the tree rest. Will only put into bonsai pot when happy with the size of trunk.

      @@Bonsaiworx Roger that, thanks! I guess that also means I can consider wiring and styling in the autumn if the repotted trees look healthy still.

    Great transformations! I know it’s autumn but I’m really curious what you put shimpaku cuttings in and aftercare because it’s spring here and I can’t get junipers down for some reason. You could just throw in like a quick chat about what you do instead of showing what you do. Either way super cool video and gives me hope for those tough leggy trees

      I just put them into a plastic pot with whatever potting mix I have. I keep them outside but in the shade and give them lots of water. No matter what time of year for me, I just do it. I don’t check on them for a year and then go and check them. Usually I’m lucky.

      Dang lol. I’ve tried multiple substrates but never get a good success rate. It gets down to 5-10*F here though. Not sure if that has something to do with it

      I also pack in my cuttings and get them close to each other. Seems like they like it more and creates more natural humidity I think.

    Ok Dave a dumb question what the difference between shimpaku and a juniper

    • @Bonsaiworx
      @Bonsaiworx  10 місяців тому

      It’s the foliage. Shimpaku is soft scale like foliage and makes really compact pads. The other junipers such as squamata, prostrata, procumbens have prickly growth and is a bit more susceptible to pests and diseases. There are other junipers that have soft foliage but will not have the compact growth of shimpaku.

    all i need now is a material like that, so i can practice bending.. any suggestions or links?

      @Bonsaiworx  Рік тому +1

      It’s difficult. I grew all these from either air layers or cuttings over many years.

    Just a quick question Shari in juniper’s trunk how do we know which side and how much to do any information I would really appreciate it thank you

    • @Bonsaiworx
      @Bonsaiworx  Рік тому +1

      I usually let the tree decide where the Shari will be. If you jin or cut off a branch then over time the trunk will die back and you can feel the live veins growing thicker than the dead veins. If you just want to creat shari on the trunk and don’t have any dead veins then start off small. Creat a small shari on the trunk. Then next year make it a little bigger and wider. Keep doing this each year until you are happy with the size.
      Some people risk the trees health and will create Shari immediately after they cut off or jin branches. I take a more slower approach.

    why not just let them grow unhindered and then bend them in 10 years

      Definitely have that going for others in my collection. Some I want to keep really shohin and finalise the design.
