  • In this episode of Head to Head, Mehdi Hasan challenges the renowned economist and thinker Dambisa Moyo on why she believes liberal democracy is under siege and requires a radical overhaul.
    The best-selling author first made waves with her book Dead Aid where she argued that foreign aid was preserving poverty in Africa instead of relieving it.
    Now, the former Goldman Sachs banker and World Bank consultant is taking on an even bigger target: liberal democracy.
    In recent years, the West has been said to be in crisis. The election of Donald Trump in the United States, the UK's Brexit vote and the rise of far-right parties across Europe have all been cited as evidence of the failures of the current political system.
    In her new book, Edge of Chaos, Moyo provides her own diagnosis for the recent rise in populism and provides a radical blueprint for change.
    "The notion that democracy is not a problem is mad. It's crazy".
    Dambisa Moyo,
    We challenge her on whether her plans to save it - by giving some voters more power than others - will end up killing democracy instead. We also ask if economic growth is more important than political freedom.
    Speaking about China and its economic model, Moyo commented how "over 300 million people have been moved out of poverty in 30 years" and suggested that the West should be careful not to "point fingers" when commenting on the country's democratic record, which was on its own particular "path".
    We are joined by a panel of three experts:
    Jason Hickel, anthropologist at University of London and author of The Divide: A Brief Guide to Global Inequality and its Solutions.
    Ann Pettifor, author of The Production of Money and one of only a handful of economists who correctly predicted the financial crisis.
    Jamie Whyte, director of research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) and a former New Zealand politician and philosophy lecturer.
    Is it time to rethink democracy? with Dambisa Moyo will be broadcast on August 3 at 20:00 GMT and will be repeated on August 4 at 12:00 GMT, August 5 at 01:00 GMT and August 6 at 06:00 GMT.
    Head to Head is Al Jazeera's forum for ideas, a gladiatorial contest tackling the big issues such as faith, nationalism, democracy and foreign intervention in front of an opinionated audience at the Oxford Union.

    IN this case, the interviewer was acting like a _robot that was programmed to ask specific questions and required specif answers_ . This is what happens when you don't read the book of the person you are interviewing and have other people tell you to attack a guest on specific phrases that they think will keep her quiet.*He only chose sentences that he thought he would use to attack her without reading the entire chapter.*

      She attacked him because of the way he interviews. She makes him squirm in his seat so she can better explain her point. Attacking isn’t always non effective almost everyone who deals with politics will attack their opposer, it’s a way to make them kinda squirm and cause you to get an upper ground. I’ve seen ted do it, milo do it, Ben does it, literally probably any politician you know have done it. Thats not an argument to make her seem dumb, she knows what she’s talking about, just like he interrupts his guess so he can try to make them get confused and say the wrong thing.

      @Adobo Those Because during her time there she worked on debt capital markets, hedge funds coverage, and global macroeconomics. Can you seriously tell me with a straight face that she had NO clue what Goldman Sachs (GS) were doing leading up to the global financial crisis of 08? She definitly lost all of her credability after she DENIED that GS was complicit AFTER they publicly admitted their wrongdoing and dishonest behavior which they even paid a huge fine for! Even if she did have no clue, then the answer would of been "I don't know", but to deny it after there's clear evidence and an admission of guilt? That's why I believe she lost her credability!

    I disagree with Dambisa, but also disappointed by Mehdi and the panelists.
    1. I don't understand why Mehdi Hasan is so hostile to the guest (Dambisa), the tone and framing of his questions is clearly shows that he was biased against her. Ofc he's the type of journalist who like to ask difficult questions, which is good, but please don't frame your guest, we are here to get new knowledge and information, *not* to "prove" that your guest is wrong.
    2. Ann Pettifor (the female panelist) is pretty good at dismantling Dambisa, she didn't intentionally "provoke" the author but explain her viewpoint with clarity. Yet she's unable to do discussion, she only make set of statements but did not asking questions or making inquiry. In short, she's good at explaining her own points, but she close her mind to Dambisa's view.
    3. Jason Hickel is a terrible panelist, he's full of contempt toward Dambisa and couldn't even discuss or talk about something that didn't match his original viewpoint. He's the ultimate example of narrow-mindedness.
    This talk is *useless,* they are unable to get anything from this discussion, just a group of people forcing their own view and *accusing* (instead of discussing with) Dambisa.

    • @MohamedNidabdella
      @MohamedNidabdella 6 років тому +9

      Immanuel Herman i guess m. Hassan was doing his job, a show like this is made to really challenge the guest with questions that mainstream people would ask, i think mahdi isn't the guy who would frame someone for their point of view on democracy, but he tries to see the problem as a typical person who will read mrs moyo's book and put her in that frame. By asking that framed question , he allows her to address the matter. The economist lady, has very strong arguments against mrs moyo book.
      You shoul've mentioned the way Mrs. moyo looks down on the host using ad hominem je each time she gets stuck (you didn't read my book - you seems very ignorant of this so i will teach you...) and uses whataboutism to defend her point of view, which is very disappointing if not pathetic. Also by the end, she talks about visiting China in tourist mode, and claiming that she knows more about china just because she went there for few days.
      Last, but also on china, she praises the political model of china "focused on the society" But then talks about how black people struggle to vote is a lesson of fighting for rights. Here where jason hickel had point this duality of viewing the same problem but he failed and instead looked like he didn't read her book.

      Mohamed Nidabdella
      I think Mehdi sour the interview by saying "just because you write it doesn't mean it's true" right in the beginning.
      My reaction is like: Ofc sherlock, that's why you are there. He should ask her why and get more info about her view, not to trying to disprove her.
      Mehdi also trying to frame her as "untrustworthy" because she was working for a big bank, which Mehdi believe as main perpetrator of 2008 housing bubble and financial crisis, therefore she's guilty by association. That's just stupid.

    • @MohamedNidabdella
      @MohamedNidabdella 6 років тому +1

      Immanuel Herman Exactly, the first point is a fair criticism of Mehdi's way of "challenging" the guest and i guess he could've been more professional. But the second part is as I mentioned Mehdi putting himself in the shoes of someone interested in economy who saw a best sller and read it only to discover that the writer is a GS former employee. But what I found more interesting is the weak way Mrs. Moyo answered that, she could've done better instead of adressing the association fallacy of Mehdi, she went on an ad Hominem one. I know that you may work with/for a company without agreeing to its different strategies, but other people don't see it that way, and Mrs. moyo had the chance to dismentle that idea and unfortunately missed it.

    • @toshir0m1
      @toshir0m1 6 років тому

      @Immanuel Herman What you describe as a flaw (in your first point) IS the very clear purpose and interest of the show. Did you see the success of past season? Mehdi was NOT less hostile to ideas he identified as false or dangerous, and that's what watchers of the show seem to actively want. You can have polite exchange of ideas ALL OVER the channels, but no no no this one ALSO must conform to the same all-too-known recipe? If you're here to take information you're at the wrong place. Get informed then come rewatch the debate, it'll be much more interesting.

To me she is offering ideas/comparisons that MAY offer a solution and to do this a person must look at all sides the question concerns. At no time did I feel or hear her say that there was only one solution to the issues she spoke/wrote about, often giving both sides (good and bad) to the answer. Worth a Watch!! :)

      Dave Ton agreed. The same can be presented in a tone where instead of offending someone we he could work towards bringing them to his side by making them understand the inherent & underlying problem, if rethinking democracy is the topic i would want everyone on board to agree, understand & move forward.
      PS: not at all a fan of Mehindi & the brigade of such journalist who earn their living just by degrading their guests in their show. Arnab Goswami & his cast of reporters, news readers & journalist are are disgrace to information media. I am not challenging their intelligence, but rather a presentation of themselves.

Dr Moyo is excellent at questioning conventional wisdom and looking at things in new and incisive ways and they should’ve seized on that as an opportunity rather than freak out and try to get her to condemn the parts of her book they find controversial. In part due to apathy and poor education, but moreso because of the insane complexity of modern govt, trade, intl affairs, voters are mostly WILDLY unqualified to vote. As a Canadian who has spent some time in China, I gotta say that once Mehdi stopped cutting her off and she got a chance to speak, she did a good job of laying out the difficulties of democracy and our "Independent man" in the west vs the Chinese way of focusing on benefits for society.
    Take the Three Gorges dam for instance. 1 000 000 people had to move to make enough power to grow the economy and lift many many people out of poverty. It offsets 32 coal or nuclear power plants. That is a sacrifice of individual rights to benefit society as a whole. The vision in that project is multigenerational, it is not based on votes in the short term.
    I am glad that she did not say the Chinese system is perfect though because clearly just like the democratic system, it is not.

    Dambisa's argument may sound controversial, however they are very similar to Socrates proposal to have a well functioning democracy.

    It has become a reality that reducing greenhouse emissions has created new economic growth. It's not entirely contradicting between economic growth and saving Earth.

    We need a system where every person including the elite is accountable for their actions by the Law Fully.
    We live in a world which is corrupted and the elite look at the working class as sheep.
    Too many educated people have no understanding of how the other half live.

    Taking Akin Khoo's words down below: Democracy is irrelevant in promoting growth. The late Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew said that after he built up Singapore into a prosperous city state.

    Because of her emotional and defensive way of responding to questions, I couldn't focus on the content of the arguments/ideas being discussed in the debate.

      It seems like you're trying to echo (and help entrench) that implicit connection between females and over-emotionality which is pervading the media as they try to undermine anything a woman does in these important realms of public affairs. You're either a bot or an individual with an interest in cementing this idiotic stereotype that women are too emotional to be highly functional in the economic and political arena and I'd hazard to say that the likes are probably fake accounts.

    When I saw the title of the video I thought the debate would be with respect to the rise of right wing parties in the democratic country. And how the majority of people are taking the road to extreme right.
    But I guess it's too early to discuss that.
