About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

What happened was no ventilation or not proper ventilation. You asking him a question and he's a student of yours. You should be explaining to him how it happened. From my point of view that type of Hive can't get the proper ventilation.

A great lesson I took away from this and the "split" video is that if you do the artificial swarm, it could save half of your bee colony from disaster! Who knows, your whole native bee population could have been wiped out had you not gone and split them earlier!

Yeah to me this whole series of setting the hives up and checking them has been better than my bee class I attended. Of course the bee class and time with our bees (before they got absconded and got overrun with moths) help me understand what he is talking about better.

11:55 that's a great tip, leaving that thin wooden insert in place does aid in the bees building foundationless comb right down. I've had great success with those strips and no wax priming at all, just using alternating foundation and foundationless frames adjacent to one another. I really enjoyed this autopsy of the hive, thank you for sharing. I would like to know if you've noticed a big difference in the small hive beetle loading in your shaded hives as compared with your full sun hives? One of my viewers asked me to pop in and view this video. Dr. Leo is a fascinating individual!

    • @mikelstous
      @mikelstous Рік тому +1

@@Juniperlaneestatesales From Dr. Leo's class, he says yes it does especially with non-insulated hives in the south. He demonstrated his insulated Layens horizontal hive with the extra (4th) entrance specifically for ventilation. Also don't face the entrance to the Texas afternoon sun so the bees can beard on a shaded side in the heat. Also might consider a gable roof instead of the flat roof for better ventilation.

I am doing this in my first hive as well. The bees seem to build on the foundationless frames with a starter strip first and build the comb out faster than they have on the foundation.

Yes, I got two insulated hives for East Texas, and one swarm trap, the bees moved directly into the hive box. I had been opening the door, as well as having 2 lemon grass scenter in there, during the day when I noticed scouts and a day later I had my first swarm install itself.

i have found that, up here in wisconsin, that "IF" you use plastic foundation, drilling three 1" holes horizonatally across really helps... the bees will alternately fill them or chew them open as they see fit for movement and ventilation throughout the year.... this is by no means an endorsement for plastic foundation, we use it here for convenience and the number of hives we work through the year... everyone has their preferences and must find a balance for their own needs

I read that placing vegetable oil in a tuna can then setting the legs into the center of the cans will prevent ants from invading your hives. Don't take my word for it as I'm not a professional beekeeper, but maybe research it. Hope that helps.

Oh no! So sorry about losing that hive! At least it was a happy ending with 3 healthy hives. I guess maybe selling the extra queens would help so it doesn’t get too congested? (if you don’t want to split and have more hives) At any rate the new boxes are obviously superior in many ways including better insulation, and vents along the top to prevent them getting too hot. Also it’s nice that they can create that circular pattern on the deeper frame. It looks like the plastic foundation needs an improved design because the bees try to improve it themselves and make irregular comb. It was so nice of Dr. Leo to come help you out with this. His passion for his craft is inspiring! I was happy to hear that you can keep a hive for the bees even if you aren’t interested in extracting the honey. I may do that some day because I grow many native plants to help out our pollinators.

Please Thank Dr. Leo for all of the great information he gave us.
I don't have bee hives yet but I've been studying bee keeping for the last few years & gleaning every bit of information I can get prepping for it.
I'll soon 67 & I'm a Disabled Senior Citizen but I've always wanted to have bees because my Great Grandfather was a bee keeper & was really good at it.
I don't know if it's true or not but my My Mother & Grandmother (he was her father) told me he never got stung but I can kinda believe it because he was such quiet, peaceful man. I've worked with animals all my life & know from experience that the calmer the person is the easier it is to work with animals & I can see it applicable to the relationship with your bees as a bee keeper.
Animals & wildlife really do know a good person when they're around them.

I've been wanting to have Bee's ever since I was a kid, listening to my Mom & Grandmother talk about my Great Grandfather who was a beekeeper, carpenter, fiddle & spoons player & was always reading & educating himself.
I follow in a lot of the same interests as he did choir, trumpet, sax & drums, I love working on building things & loved working on cars, I'm a history buff from as far back as I can remember, probably 3rd grade.
When I was in 3rd grade, my teacher noticed I needed glasses & urged my mother to take me to her optometrist (she & Grandmother wore glasses) & he found I had Astigmatism & needed reading glasses.
It was like giving me the keys to a castle lol.
I went to the library a few blocks from my house, every saturday, got a stack full of books & would have them read by the next saturday, when I would repeat the drill lol. I did that that all the way through graduating high school.
Sorry got carried away in the story lol!
They both told me that he never once got stung & I really believe them because they said he was the quietest, most mild mannered person they ever knew.
Anyone who knows animals, knows that is the demeanor of great animal trainers & bee's are in that category lol.
Anyway the reasons I haven't come down to basic finances. I'm a Disabled Senior Citizen on a small fixed income so I can't really afford to do it right now & I'm living in an apartment right now with my daughter inlaw & my 4 Grandkids lol.
Hopefully after this virus is taken care of, we'll be able to move into the country.
I just turned 67 thursday & before I die, I will be in the country again, have my own chickens, animals & my own bee hives!
Ok! God, you & I have got this!
Thank you for the encouragement Hun!

I had something similar happen to me last year. Using Langstroth hives I lost 4 out of 5 hives. The wax moths moved in and destroyed them even though they had been strong hives before the wax moths invaded. After speaking with many bee keepers in the area we suspect 3 different issues caused it. 1 - Varroa mites weakened them. 2 - End of summer, very hot and not a lot of resources. 3 - Now with a weakened hive the wax moths moved in and destroyed the comb. The bees where overcome with the moths and they couldn't overcome them.
This year I moved the bees out from under the shade trees and are now in full sun. Shade seems to encourage wax moths at least in our area. I setup 3 large bug zappers which do a great job of reducing bugs and moths in the area. Lastly, I'm testing and treating Varroa mites. So far, this is working well this year and bees look great.

I've always disliked the horizontal hive only because bees go vertical in trees. However, the hive in the open field is very deep making it viable to overwinter bees.
My question is what do you do about varroa? Do you still use any management of these pests? I know you're natural beekeeping and you're basically letting the bees draw on small cell. But, varroa still has to be present.

I did very much enjoy the presentation by the Dr Leo as he was very well informed and full of excellent and helpful information. The large chap was just in the way of the presentation I'm sorry to say. Claiming that the failed hive "happened in just a couple of days" simply would not be the case, seeing the progress of the pests in that hive. I Think the first hive was just ignored. Great presentation and I find the horizontal hive interesting. The pervasive chemicals in wax foundation are particularly problematic.
