I am against the leg lace beyond two turns. Most other moves require the hold to be reset. You can't just put a half-nelson in and rock the opponent 4 times. It is not as exciting as a throw and should not be a match ending technique, almost on par with a pin.

Freestyle has a lot of aspects to it that I do like, but I have always found this multiple scoring from multiple rolls on the same hold annoying.
It just seems to force guys to give up takedowns early or to stop fighting and belly out with legs spread waiting for a whistle.
It just feels like a part of the game is missing. I am not saying anything should change. Just that I do not like this part.
I do hope that college & freestyle stay different enough so that college never has this or say a push out point, which would drastically change edge of mat wrestling to the point of ruining it. A point for obviously trying to flee the mat to avoid takedown might not be a bad addition though.

The point to this technique is control and dominance. If you don't want to get turned by your opponent, then stop him from initiating the lace. I can agree with dominance but if you look at the way it is locked with ankle anatomy and also having shoes on, its hard to justify that it is completely dominating. Freestyle should be done without shoes on and allowing for more more slip. Upper body handling is justified because the shoulder has three planes of motion and is much harder to torque if people are flexible and they don't have boxing gloves on. The ankle is pretty much one plane of motion as eversion and inversion only account for around 45 degrees of total flexibility. If you add a shoe in the mix and cross the legs, it's like putting a padlock on it. Rolling them repeatedly, as far as exertion on the body, once it is locked is negligible. Take the shoes off and we are talking a different story.

For all of you freestyle guys, look at the position in 1:04-1:05. Desanto's ankle tape and shoe are providing the same level of grip that Home Depot sandpaper does. Yes, Vito's skill is exceptional but I'd like them to get rid of shoes altogether to give the bottom guy more of a chance to slip out. If you want to keep ankle locks, the grip tape has to be optional. Headgear are optional which make headlocks harder to hit, so get rid of the shoe requirement and then see how many guys do ankle locks...
Freestyle will never be as exciting as watching someone get pinned until this repeated ankle lock rolling changes.
"Americans need to do more freestyle" pffff nah. Props to Vito and Desanto. Go USA.

    • @chade1983
      @chade1983 11 місяців тому +9

The tape is optional. They can wear shoes where the laces are tucked or they can tape the laces in a way that does not wrap around the foot.
Also, they aren't "ankle locks" it's called a "leg-lace" and it has been a part of freestyle wrestling since freestyle wrestling was freestyle wrestling. In the past the rules were different and you could not just continue the leg-lace until you tech falled your opponent, you would only get 2 points for the first turn, then you'd get 1 point or no points for the second depending on the year, since both rules existed at different times. Then if you released the leg-lace and re-secured a new leg-lace and turned your opponent, you'd get 2 points for another turn.
That was then changed back to the old rules, which are the rules that are currently in place, where you can just keep the original leg-lace and keep turning your opponent until you tech fall them. They made this change because it makes matches more exciting and it raises the stakes. The message to the wrestlers is : "Be aggressive and get the leg-lace first, that way you can win. Or don't and you can lose. Be aggressive."
The problem at the higher levels of freestyle and greco is a lack of action and scoring. All high level wrestlers are really good at defense and stalling. They are also very explosive, which means they can stall out periods, wait until the final seconds to try and score to win, and hopefully steal matches where they did very little. That may be effective, but it's boring to watch. Fans hate watching those matches.
How do you incentivize wrestlers to constantly attack? You reward them for scoring. You penalize wrestlers for being passive. Which is why the push-out, shot clock, and criteria rules are a nice addition to the sport. More ways to to incentivize attacks: you lower the tech fall score requirement, you make scoring easier, you give more points to wrestlers for performing high amplitude moves, and you allow wrestlers to score multiple times using the same lock, lace, pinch, or hold. All of these measures speed up matches and encourage aggression and action from both wrestlers.
We have tried it pretty much every way you can, this current scoring system is the most exciting and entertaining iteration of the sport I have seen in my lifetime. There is one exception, there was a brief time in Greco/freestyle wrestling history when there was a yellow dot in the center of the mat and if you performed a 5 point throw, landing your opponent on the yellow dot, you got double the points, making it a 10 point throw. That rule only lasted for a year or two back in the 1980s or 1990s.
You should be thankful for these new rules in freestyle and Greco. The old boring 1-1 or 0-0 matches that lasted 15-20 minutes with two guys circling each other or just leaning on each other with identical over-under front body locks are dead and gone. Kurt Angle won his gold medal by a judges panel deciding the match. Three judges watched the match and if after OT there was still a tie, they put it to a vote to decide who won the matches.
Trust me, these new rules are much better than anything international wrestling has ever had. Barefoot wrestling would cause a bunch of sliding and make throwing people less safe. Once the feet got wet, traction would be non-existent. Slipping and sliding feet makes it quite difficult to wrestle effectively, hence the wrestling shoes.

      I'm gonna keep posting this...
Wrestling shoes and taped ankles are a huge disadvantage to escaping an ankle lock freestyle roll. In folkstyle, you can only hang on to someone's ankles for a few seconds until you get called for stalling. Freestyle should be done without shoes on and allowing for more slip. It would add an exponential amount of grip required. I don't care how tough you are, the way your heel is shaped and adding something as grippy as a wrestling shoe, you aren't getting away. Upper body handling is justified because the shoulder has three planes of motion and is much harder to torque if people are flexible and they also don't have an anchor such as a boxing glove on their hands. You don't see many wrestlers taping their upper bodies because they know it makes hand control that much easier from neutral. The ankle is pretty much one plane of motion as eversion and inversion only account for around 45 degrees of total flexibility. If you add a shoe in the mix and cross the legs, it's like putting a padlock on it. Rolling them repeatedly, as far as exertion on the body, is negligible once you have it locked. Can we just stop participating in freestyle and get folk style into the Olympics? It’s legit so much better

Americans need to learn more about freestyle. I think we should stop doing folk style and switch. Better for international Olympic wrestling.

That’d be crazy for the sport. Don’t think it’s gunna happen tho

Why? Folkstyle is better for a transition into MMA. Also nobody wants to see leg laces when they can watch an actual top and bottom game play out.

@@nicklasleschinger3172 a bunch of Dagestan wrestlers would probably disagree. The rest of the world does fine with it. But most importantly folk style wrestlers have to transition to freestyle which is sub optimal always. If you think about it Greco, free style and folk style are styles of their own. Its harder to transition.

      NO!!!!!
Do not change folkstyle. Do NOT ruin the top position for all time so that nobody ever gets to watch anything but belly flopping and looking for a whistle. SO BORING!!
