      @Samuel Chavarría Nobody has posted a reasonable answer to your question. One problem is that whoever wrote the dialogue in ep.3 at 34:00 didn't understand the chess game (the real game was Nezhmtdinov-Kasparian 1955). Benny Watts told Beth that Beltik could have beaten her, and she then set up the position and saw that 30.c4 was better than the move Beth played, h5. However Beth still had a winning position after 30.h5, but she also said "Beltik could have beat me." Wrong. If Beltik had played 30...gxh5 white should play 31.Bh3. It's possible that netflix filmed a clip that shows Beth making a losing move in the Beltik game, but if so they must have cut that scene.

Rather than try to claim that your fictional characters are better chess players than the historical ones who donated the source games, you can say, "oh, she had all night to theorycraft and that's why she found this more interesting line".

    The Queens Gambit is a great advert for Chess especially for girls and non-Chess players. The story line is based on the American, Bobby Fischer who famously only played 1 e4 before winning Game 6 in the 1972 World Championship with The Queens Gambit against the Champion, Boris Spassky from Russia in which he sportingly congratulated Bobby on a great game and was considered the best game of the Championships. Bobby Fischer was a Chess prodigy and at 14 years old won the United States Championships. The one trait that is incorrect is the drug substance abuse as I have never come across that from any Chess player of any ability being that it would affect their game negatively. I thought the performance was excellent in which the chess games were from those played by past Masters. Adjourning a game did occur in the 1972 World Championship for which they are no longer used for many years since the development of chess engines and players playing shorter games to a finish.

    • @cutebubbles2007
      @cutebubbles2007 3 роки тому +8

      BF was just an inspiration to create Harmons character, the substance abuse IMO was included to add even more complexity to Beth and make her demons more visible. Also an antagonistic force was needed in the series and the writer did not want to necessarily put this on the russians, so it was really at the end of the day Beth unleashing her ful potential despite her internal demons...

      Dude, chess absolutely attracts people with easily addicted behavior patterns, they're people like anyone else. What are you on about with calling it "incorrect"? There are even genetic factors that predispose some people to be especially susceptible to addiction to alcohol and benzodiazepines, as I recall (the drug she takes in the story is in that class) and her being a chess player doesn't make her immune to that nor to her drugging as a child.

    • @imwithyou38

    • @ItsAsparageese
      @ItsAsparageese Рік тому

      @@imwithyou38 Yeah the vivid visuals in the show don't really line up with plain benzos IRL & you're correct that the drug in the show is made up! It's meant to represent a common real one at the time though. But yeah I think the chess visualization thing is more a matter of her innate ability & its relationship to the drug represents her difficulty believing in her own potential or believing she could have her skills without her addiction being fulfilled. I'm sure you know as well as I do, addiction does a great job of convincing people they need their drug just to be any kind of normal. That's why after she starts healing & enters recovery she finds herself having the visualization ability independently in the end. That's my take on it anyway, but that's probably because I'm a medical geek/I really like science accuracy, so the idea of the drug actually inducing her visuals pisses me off & I refuse to accept that it wasn't just an ability she had all along & only thought she needed the drug to unlock it, lol

    I watched the first episode yesterday and there were scenes involving her dreaming about chess and it reminded me of my old days and part of why I quit 😂 I used to see chess in my dreams all the time and would calculate moves and continue play against myself or even against someone or something that would make the moves for the other “player” (also myself I guess lol). Either way, chess took over my dreams and at first, it wasn’t all that bad as I was making progress with it, but it eventually got annoying to the point of almost driving me insane. Mind you, this was at a relatively young age much like in the show, so I was interested in other things like sports and cars and those did not mix well at the chess tournaments, but I kind of wish I had not quit and kept playing. I’m sure a lot of people have similar dreams so I guess there’s just those who like them and use them and those who don’t 😂 I do want to start playing again, as I never thought as clearly and with as much determination as I did when I was younger. Found this channel recently and am really enjoying it. Thanks!

    What I loved about this is that the big game doesn't end with a resignation after a dramatic check, nor even with an easy-to-understand-but-terribly-cliche queen capture, let alone an actual checkmate. No, it's Beth sliding the king over one square, depriving Borgov of any more checks. You don't have to know chess to enjoy the series, but if you do, the chess is just *chef's kiss*.
