@@johnd3421 well she specifically said that she was invited to the project for the movie before there was even a script and that she had some creative control on Beth's portrayal during the whole process, i.e. Anya made the choice that Beth had to be a red-head to stand out visually from others. Double checking on the interview I watched, she doesn't explicitly mention picking clothes, but from the sound of it she had a lot of control on Beth's appearance.

The costuming on this show was top notch. It was historically accurate and FILLED with symbolism. Like the scene at the very end where she is literally dressed as a white queen. Or the many (many) checkered patterns she wears throughout the series. It such a brilliant attention to detail, I love it!

Conspiracy theory: Cleo is a KGB agent. She is hanging around major chess players for some reason, and the year she meets Benny he lost to Borgov. Then she builds trustful relationships with Beth right after they meet: she complements her and flirts with her right in front of their ‘boyfriends’.
Then she comes to her before the final in Paris and manipulates Beth to drink. What’s even worse, Cleo builds a negative image of Benny to make Beth stop training before Moscow.
But main point is that Cleo was the only person on Earth who knew that Beth loved Townes! And in Moscow we realize that Soviet Embassy knew that as well.
Another argument that Cleo’s actions and Townes’ coming to Moscow are related is that these two were not in the book.

I read a theory that Cleo, the French model we meet at Benny’s, is actually a Russian spy. The way she meets the other players and comes into their lives is very circumstantial, and she redirects questions that are specific about herself. Secondly, she convinced Beth to come out and drink with her the night before her match with Borgov when there had been plenty of previous rumors amongst the Russians that she was “a drunk.” Lastly, Beth only ever told Cleo (that we’re shown) that she had feelings for Townes and Townes magically appears in Russia, saying his visa was expedited for an unknown reason. Potentially the Russians were hoping Townes would distract Beth for the final tournament. I thought this was an interesting prospect.

I think it makes sense for her character though. She was used to thinking of herself as alone, and dwelling on the people who had left or abandoned her - all four of her obvious parental figures either died or abandoned her. She did not have the emotional tools to reach out to people and had very little practice in maintaining or even having relationships. She didn't really understand how they worked. When things got tough, she retreated inwards and shut people out, losing herself in her addictions and isolating herself from those she cared about. That is quite believable behaviour. At the same time, when people asked in interviews or things, she never shied away from mentioning Mr Shaibel and she always had that level of respect for him. I just don't think it really occurred to her that people from her childhood, especially those like Mr Shaibel who didn't show a huge amount of tangible affection and who effectively left her life after the pills incident, might still care about her and follow her progress. It didn't occur to her that she didn't have to be alone just because she'd lost the built-in family figures. So I like how they did it. I like how they showed her determined to go to the funeral, facing her fears to enter the home again and enter the basement, then finding proof that all along someone cared and was genuinely proud of her. And I am glad that they showed her grief and her regrets, and showed her truly crying for a man who she knew had changed her but didn't realise had been changed by her.
tl;dr she didn't really think to reach out to him or know how to, but she did appreciate him very deeply. The whole plot is still heartbreaking, but from an artistic viewpoint I like it.

I really loved this show:) its just brilliant. From her internal battles and addicts, to the revelation of what her biological mom tried to do, to her adopted mom building their relationship up until her tragic death. Then with Beth's relationships with Harry and Benny, both pushed her. The fleshing out of Benny from being this cocky guy with an inflated ego, to genuinely caring for and wanting to be with Beth and wanting the best for her. As much as I wanted her to return to Benny and New York, the ending wasn't about them. It was about Beth actually recovering and finding herself and the pure love for chess that she had as a young girl:) the show is beautiful!

I think losing to Benny so many times in rapid succession was actually the determining factor in her winning the match that mattered. She got to see his moves over and over. What he does under pressure, his "gotcha" moves, his comfort zone, etc. Sort of like when you play poker with a group of strangers. You lose for a little while and just watch. Then you learn. Then you win. She might not have even been doing it consciously, but her mind works so fast that it put things together. That's why Benny says after the match that he'd never been "beat like that."

It gave me, a 50 year old male and former school chess captain, such joy to see a show based around the game. However, I also got quite emotional at her personal losses. Even her OD on tranquilizers got me...
Back in 1992 I read a book called The Eight by Katherine Neville. Find it, read it then tell me how good it would be as a series! It is also about chess.

Something i remember from her battles with Gorgov were the pieces, in both the one at Mexico and France she was playing black, alluding at the time were she was practicing and also the reminder that 'white has an advantage' but to the battle in Russia she finally gets white and she wins, probably symbolizing when she won for the first time back in the orphanage and the rule that the third try is a win.

What stood out to me was how the only villain of the show was Beth herself. You can argue the pills were but Beth’s struggles were the constant cause of her downfall, which I loved. So many shows don’t take this risk in favor of a traditional antagonist, so the fact that they took the shot and did it as well as they did is a true testament to the entire team behind the show.

I really loved that she ultimately was able to get better, and not die tragically (like so many stereotypical mentally ill characters). The ending was perfect and and so optimistic unlike so many things in media these days. Also liked the fact that she didn't end up in a romantic relationship 👌🏻👌🏻 10/10

  • @AlmostSkillfull

Okay but her and Cleo definitely hooked up. Not only had there been plenty of subtle queer coding before they met (Her ogling multiple girls getting felt up. Her only having male friends. Her lack of enthusiasm towards basically every guy but Townes. Her fascination with that restaurant singer. ect.) but the chemistry between them starting with that introductory kiss on the cheek was palpable. Not to mention her excitement that Cleo might be in Paris when she is, and the flirty way Cleo said "idk maybe;)". Also Cleo showing up at her hotel and talking her into drinks, especially after she knew Cleo was bi because she talked about having sex with other models at the apartment, where she also told her she was smart and pretty. Also in the last scene of them together at the bar Cleo tells her that another romantic option is staring at her right now, we're meant to think it's the guys behind them, but the entire time she says it Cleo is staring at her and doesn't even so much as look their way. The scene ends with them walking over to the two guys, but the only one who ends up in her bed is Cleo. Cleo doesn't dip out either. She's there at the match and gives her "the look". Then unlike most other times when we see her travel home, it cuts straight to her being there. Needless to say I'm pretty sure Cleo "comforted" her after her loss, which would also explain how she went from very reluctantly agreeing to one drink to just being on a total bender when she gets home.

theres just 1 detail i like to point out that rarely happens in shows i watch: periods. never have i seen a lady's period in a show or movie before and the way they dealt with it was so great (like her adoptive mom becoming a parent? yes yes yes) and the girl she beat help her out is really good too. i dont even mind beth throwing away the tampon because if someone gave me that i wouldnt have used it either and would have just done what beth did, stuffing her underwear with toilet paper, for personal reasons.
idk just the fact that it was even included was just amazing to my teenage self. anyways even though im under the age of the target audience this video really pushed me into watching this show and the only regret i have is that my family might see i watched an MA rated show. other than that i have to say this is one of my favourites now
