Originally posted this on a short video... I went to see Justin Hayward in Birmingham, England on 12th September, and Mike of course was the opening act and later played in Justin's "backing" band. As a 64 year-old I don't get over-impressed by much these days, but I have to say, Mike was absolutely outstanding (as a finger-style guitarist myself, I did feel the urge to go home and build a Gretsch/Fender bonfire at one point....) Mike engaged very well with what was actually Justin Hayward's audience (a sea of bald heads and silver hair I would add...) I had a chat with Mike in the interval and bought one of his CDs, which he was kind enough to sign. He seems a very modest guy for someone boasting so much talent (Rick Beato's feature on him was, "Is This the World's Greatest Acoustic Guitarist?" - not far off, I'm sure...) It appeared that there were people who stayed in the bar until Justin took to the stage - all I can say is, they have no idea what they missed. I would also add that Justin was well deserving of the huge applause and double standing ovation he ( and the band) received. There was I think some sadness in Justin's words at the end. England's Birmingham is in the West Midlands, where the home towns of the rest of the Moody Blues are (including Ray Thomas and Graeme Edge, who of course died in 2018 and 2021 respectively). There was some poignancy in Justin's final farewell to the audience also, as I think that at 75 years old, his words were perhaps tinged with thoughts of the inevitable. For me, this shall remain in my memory as one of the best live concerts I've seen - with no little contribution from Mike.
I’m so glad to see Justin Hayward’s band mates on your show Fil! Karmen is amazing and so is Mike and Julie who completes their quartet! I was at Justin’s concert in the Union Chapel last night and it was fabulous! My second time seeing Justin Hayward there and it did not disappoint! We all just love them! Justin Hayward was in fine voice too! ❤🎉🎸👏🥂

They are members of Justin Hayward, lead guitar and singer of the Moody Blues, group. They toured the US in the late spring and summer. I saw them in Portland, Oregon twice. It is a good show!
I can't get enough of these types of videos. Karmen and Mike are so intriguing to listen to. I felt like I got a real feel through your interview of what it's like to be a musician, and the techniques needed to play an instrument. Thanks for introducing me to them, it was fun. Great going Fil👍☮️💜

So wonderful to hear these amazing musicians talk about how they finesse their instruments. A lot of it goes over my head, but I can pick up on some of it and it's fascinating. Justin, Julie, Mike and Karmen kick off their 2023 Canadian/American tour tonight! Best of everything to them. Break a leg, guys! Love you!
This is great! I’ve been watching your channel off and on for a while. I appreciate the insight, musicianship said analysis. My degree is in flute performance. I have a guitar but most of my practice and playing time is spent on the flute.
Excellent interview FIl ! Very interesting comments about RH technique changes between electric and acoustic/classical guitar - e.g., how do you sweep pick on a nylon string? Also the insights on arrangements, and how to translate the various "band member parts" to bass line, arpeggios, melody lines was interesting. Oh, and I think Tull has shown that people will appreciate the flute in a rock band - remember the ad Tull took out in the music press after winning the Hard Rock Grammy : "The flute is a heavy metal instrument!"
Blessed to have had a photograph with Karmen and a chat with Mike at their recent concert in Weymouth U.K. 13/3/24. Such nice people and so down to earth.
I got a flute as a Christmas present one year but I decided it was too difficult to learn so mom took it back to the store. I was more interested in playing guitar and had already taught myself to play by that time. Very interesting interview.
I have enjoyed both Mike and Karmen live in concert and they’re so talented and personable. Great folks here, and I love listening to them. Justin is awesome as well, but everyone knows that!

Didn't Ian Anderson want play for the Moody Blues a few years back? Saw him with JH and Greg Lake at a Christmas concert where he played the flute on NIWS.
Saw Mike Dawes a few years ago in Sacramento, CA. He was with an Andy McKee tour. Personally, MD was the best. Not only was his playing awesome but he has a terrific personality with that Brit sense of humor.
