Purchased a set of 1/4 and 3/8 drive low profile sockets from Oreilly’s. Let me know what you guys think and I hope to do a follow up once I’ve got some wrench time on them
Biggie Fitz, yessir!! The stamping is done very well. They even took the time to print the part number which I my opinion isn’t necessary based on the price point for these sockets. I’d see that to be necessary with more expensive brands such as Snap-on whereby if you break a socket, you’d need the individual item number for warranty purposes. The chrome job was also decent, along with the machining work in general. I’ll be focusing on fit going forward to see how they compare to other brands within the same price-point. Thanks again for commenting and sharing your insight!!
They do come in handy,I have the Craftsman low profile pass through set.Used it on a 2009 Ford F150 with the 5.4 Yesterday to get to a bolt holding the heater hose tube in the back.Fit in there without a problem which was under the intake I had to remove getting to it.
Walter, glad to hear this design worked for you. I have limited experience with this type of design, but I’m hopeful they’ll work out just fine. Can you comment as to whether or not a typical ratcheting wrench would or would not be an improvement over the low profile socket? I think that would be very beneficial to share with everyone!!! Thanks again and I look forward to your feedback.
Corey, Thank you for commenting! I think you’ll be satisfied with the set based on the level of quality and detail this set displays. I’ve used the electronic 1/4 drive set and they worked very well. For the money, I sure wouldn’t pass them up!
Extremely informative! I've been eyeing a set of these and didn't realize that for best results I need a pass through ratchet. However, someone said that a regular wrench that fits the outer base of the socket will also work. Thanks!
I sent Hard knocks sets of whats called wrench sockets, they're kinda the same but the ratchet end goes into a ratchet wrench or regular wrench of the corresponding size. Put Westward wrench sockets in the video search of youtube and the videos we've done on them should come up.. I have used them on countless occasions to help me in tight or awkward area's.. id suggest finding the longest thinest wrench to use on those like the gearwrench gearbox wrenches. Great video James, and again thanks for the help with the snap on! I been seeing good results and really makes it worth paying the money for the special help that I been needing from them lately lol =)
Yota, Thank you my fiend! Yes I saw that vid on the westward sockets and I wish I had as set of those!!! I didn’t consider using with a wrench, but that seems like a great idea. The only problem with these I can see is, there’s no way to retain the socket in the wrench, for example, the passthru ratchets has a retention pin to keep the socket seated. A typical wrench does not and I think they’d fall out, but will certainly try this tomorrow. As for the Snap-on warranty process, I’m glad to hear that is working out. It does make the average guy feel a little better about buying their brand. I still say don’t purchase off the truck, rather stick to Craigslist, eBay, garage sales, etc to find the best deals.
These sockets work well with a properly sized flexible ratcheting wrench. It’s overall height is the same as the socket height since the socket presses into the wrench.
I have a set of the pass through craftsman sockets with ratchets. I’ve used them once or twice and they’re too narrow an opening to allow them to slip past the bolt to reach the nut in the circumstances I’ve needed. So far, I’ll stick to ratchet wrenches for most situations that have a long bolt in the way of reaching a fastener.
Rust and Repair, good note!! Yea I’ve not used them yet and I do have a set of metric Mountain brand XL double box-end ratcheting wrenches, as well as a set of SK ratcheting wrenches, so either way I’ll get that pesky fastener off!! Thanks for commenting!
When is your restoration video have your wife's garden shears going to be up on UA-cam I already asked that it's because you said that you were going to start doing restorations of old vintage tools and other things on your channel and I was just wondering about an update on that and what was going on with that and what and will it be coming pretty soon thanks my good friend your tool friend Brian Williams Guthrie Oklahoma City ok thanks great videoI always enjoy hearing about different types of tools when someone purchases something new and their share their information in what they know because we can all learn a lot from that thank you
Hey Brian! I’m working on getting that vid posted. The weather has been terrible hear lately. I was in Kansas last week and got a cold, so that took me down for a few days also. Was slated to visit Tulsa, OK but that’ll have to wait. As for the shears, please look for that vid in the next few days. I have about 15 projects in the queue currently, all involving restorations, so you’ll get some good content!! Thanks again and I always enjoy talking with you!!
If it has the drive machined into it, it shouldn’t matter if you put it on a standard ratchet UNLESS they also cut corners. When I checked locally, the 3/8 sockets only came in spline. No thank you. At least their 1/4” is 6pt
Nice to know the Crescent X6 and Gearwrench pass thru handles (3/8") do work with these sockets in a pinch. Do you know if the same goes with the 1/4" set you show, does it fit the smaller 1/4" Gearwrench pass thru handle? What hex size is the drive side of the sockets?
they only good with a passthru ratchet and 3/8 looks like inverted torx or spline than 12 point socket like how they have the metric and sae sizes stamp on them
Hi Larry B., yea I’m hopeful they’ll work out for some jobs. With the introduction of ratcheting wrenches such as Grarwrench, Mountain and others, the passthru socket is almost obsolete. I can’t think of a situation where theirs would be better than a typical ratcheting box end wrench, but I’d imagine someone probably had a story! Mainly, I liked the design and the cost was very doable and I figured, let’s give them a shot and see how/if they’ll work out for the average guy/gal!!
Great stuff! Excellent presentation!
ScoutCrafter, Thank you John!!!
I like how they show both SAE and metric sizes on each socket.

There are some areas that a ratcheting wrench won't fit
Great video and great review!!!! Thank you for this and putting in your time and effort!!! I will now probably get the 3/8 set

My long double box end ratchet wrenches took the place of my low profile sockets
the rough machining wasn't operator error - it was when the cutting tool got worn and time to change it out - great review thanks
The sockets need to be slightly oversized. If the socket was exactly 13mm, it would never fit on a 13mm fastener. The specs look good. Nice sockets.

I like my gearwrench passthrus

Bought the same set but flex head rachets about take care of clearance issues

Or just get a good set of ratcheting wrenches
Trucker88, got those too!!
