35 years ago I bought a set of deep sockets from Mac. 1/4 to 1inch. 1/4 thru 9/16 are semi deep. The 7/16, 1/2 & 9/16 semi deep have been my go to sockets for the past 35 years.
All the time. Just depends on where the fastener is located. When I was installing and removing cylinder heads and engines I always found myself reaching for them. When Deep was too deep and shallow was to shallow. The Mids were pretty much a go to for me. Though I only purchased them for 3/8 drive and 1/4 drive. Never found a need for half inch mids.
A few months back purchased a set from Grey Pneumatic (1213MSD) 3/8" Drive 13-Piece Semi-Deep Metric Socket Set- @ Amazon $ 42.00 (7 mm-19mm ) no size skipped lifetime warranty.
Hey great to see you Justin. Yeah I bought both sae and mertric sets of the semi deep snap-on sockets they both came with a free ratchet a flex head or a extra long. So I texted my driver just to be sure if I got both sets would I get both ratchets, he said yes. Mine came with the magnet trays witch I do like and the semi deep are very good and I only spent 450. Bucks to get two free ratchets
People should look into grey pneumatic, they have a nice mid set. I bought a set from them, it comes with deep and short, metric and standard. Also has a metric and standard swivel set for around $400. 6 impact socket sets for $400 with a lifetime warranty and I haven’t broke one yet
I bought the gearwrench it was buy 3/8 get 1/4 set free. Use them all the time and no issues yet. I put them on my Milwaukee 1/4 impact just about every time. Came on nice plastic rails too.
I got in the mid length socket train a long time ago when I bought a set of 3/8” drive Matco impact sockets. I liked them so much, I then bought a 1/4” drive chrome Matco set. Then a small set of Snap On 1/2” drive impacts and finally, when Snap On came out with their FDX sockets, I wanted to try those so I bought the 3/8” chrome mid length set. Yes, I do have a tool problem.
Hello sir great post. I bought the semi deep sockets from snap-on last year a deal on either a flex head or extra long steel handle ratchet free so I did buy both sae and metric and got both ratchets only cost 440. Bucks for two free ratchets. They are nice sockets thin wall 6 point and the ratchets are the best
I say we either start a 2018 Christmas fund to get Brother Dow the tools he wants or we sign him up for TA (Tools Anonymous), or we just buy him a Tool Truck....!
Must admit I did wonder why until I found a 1/4 drive 7mm on a truck. Started using it on a ratchet for hose clips, it became a go to. So I bought a 3/8 drive set. They’re kind of a happy medium. Often means you don’t need to grab an extension as well. If you add a 1” extension to a shallow socket it will probably be almost the height of your deeps. This is why these fit in lots of places, they’re that crucial bit shorter than a shallow & shortest extension.
My shop mechanic use Snap on, Mac tools, Cornwell, Matco, Craftsman & even Harbor Freight. I personally use Snap On & Blue Point, Gear Wrench, OTC & EZ Red. I have a used Snap On Tool Box from 1994 and I still use it.
First off... nice set of tools. Although... I viewed this video as you explaining why you bought this tool set and didn’t it shop around for a better deal or buy a Tool set of a different brand. The fact that you didn’t shop eBay or online means you wanted the immediate gratification of having the tools. I do the same by the way with some tools. If you don’t make new financial habits then you are doomed to keep running in the same circle you are in. Best of luck. Keep the videos coming.
agreed, often this mentality is really what puts people in trouble with any kind of lender. I guess in the end, seeing the tangible benefits of this tool might make it worth it, but only time will tell.
The problem with EBay is you get a lot of trash tools on it. If you're really strapped for cash then it worth the nickle and dime job but if you need better made stuff that doesn't fuck up or fits properly then you have to go this way. The other problem with EBay is warranty, as people buy stuff from a truck but do a dodgy deal with it or sell stuff on the sly and you have no warranty on that stuff. That can cause big problems

The gearwrench mid lengths are almost overly impressive. I've never broke one in this midwest salt filled land. The socket wall is a bit on the thick side but I've never had a problem with them being too thick.
I have found them handy, one is the 18mm semi deep for access to the top bellhousing bolts in the 1998 to 2004 Dodge Intrepids and Chrysler Concordes.A deepwell will not fit and a shallow won't fit.

Maybe sometime if you get bored, we (me an experienced writer for a couple ford dealers) could hammer out, fun and lightheartedly, the small but important battles that are fought daily between techs/writers. I always think I’m right but so do techs especially with warranty time/issues (fuck warranty anything). It might be cool and you know how it can get when the guy/girl writing and dispatching says mean things to the guy that actually gets it done, lol, in a hot shop in August. Good vids, peace! Oh, BG or Winn’s? Peace!
GearWrench mid lengths have the same sizes and is about $40 for the sockets on a rail no ratchet. They are good sockets, not Snap On or Mac quality but close enough for sockets even professionals won’t use everyday.
For new guys starting out with nothing i would recommend buy mids in 1/4 & 3/8 before you buy any sockets. Deeps and shallows are still needed but can get by with mids for most things.
SK has made mid length sockets for years. Have my semi deep SK in sae and metric for over twenty years. Only cracked 14mm and that was from doing something stupid.
I bought semi deep carlyle sockets 3/8 and 1/4 drive i carry both sets in my tool bag for work covers 99% of my needs I use them everyday and never had any issue with them
Why doesn't anyone make ratcheting box ends with a nut retaining lip ? It would seem to me that the nut passing right through is the biggest reason why one wouldn't always use ratcheting box ends over a ratchet with sockets. For the most part would these not replace deep and semi deep sockets in many cases ?
I buy American as much as I can and there are reasonable priced American sockets such as Wright Tools. Their impacts are the toughest I’ve used and I have some that are over 30 years old. Having said that , I do own a few imported hand tools. Wright Tool doesn’t do tool trucks and advertising which keeps their prices lower.
I bought a 13mm med. deep well from snap on. $21 for one socket. I guess if you need the whole set. That would be the way to go. Snap On is right down the road from me, and I feel guilty for not buying their tools, but they are so pricey. Sears was a mile away from me. Now that they are gone. I may need to invest in Snap On.

Nice ratchet haven't gotten it in comfort grip yet but the kids might have One snapon definitely one of the best but I got the kid's 3 and it was just a guess little under 400 but 1/2" and 3/8" pricey but definitely good. I got them some Capri and tecton and proto and hf not a complaint after a year on anything but they did say Capri was not too bad. Not really a hf fan but one thing the impact deep well been beaten on from the shop to the farm and have not broken one yet lost one in the field but they are tuff so far and we use a Milwaukee 1/2" fuel impact with like 1400foot lbs on everything from tractor to lug nuts so far so good.
I bought the semi deeps metric in impact and chrome. I hardly ever touch my deep or shallow anymore. Been about 3-4 years now. They’re awesome!

Matt Brennan not sure
Matt Brennan about 6 months
You done got took!
Peace!
How many sockets have you bought since you made this video?
GearWrench mid lengths have the same sizes and is about $40 for the sockets on a rail no ratchet. They are good sockets, not Snap On or Mac quality but close enough for sockets even professionals won’t use everyday.
Gear Wrench also sells a bit socket set that's a steal. $40 for torx, mm,
and sae hex. That'd be at least $60 if I bought the sets individually.
Justin great video but do miss the live streams
In addition to being just long enough for most needs, semi-deeps won't wobble as much in use (are more stable) than regular deep sockets.
Do we argue 6 point vs 12 point?
6.
Daniel Ochoa why?
I have the impact version . the main ones I use.
Or you can get a shallow socket and a wobbly
I bought semi deep carlyle sockets 3/8 and 1/4 drive i carry both sets in my tool bag for work covers 99% of my needs I use them everyday and never had any issue with them
Why doesn't anyone make ratcheting box ends with a nut retaining lip ?
It would seem to me that the nut passing right through is the biggest reason why one wouldn't always use ratcheting box ends over a ratchet with sockets.
For the most part would these not replace deep and semi deep sockets in many cases ?
I think I just saw a set like this
Enjoy.
Geez, skip to 11:00
Love my semi-deep SO sockets. I use them so often I don’t know how I ever got by without them.
That Is a cool deal
Mid length sockets at Wal-Mart, Stanley, 20bux
Lol you get a free ratchet, organizer, and sockets for $244.
Snap On semi deep sockets are pretty sick, can't go wrong with their ratchets either, they're the best
Hey bud so, I love SnapOn as you know but, I just cant sometimes. This is a good deal!
Feel rachet!? That like a 100$ the organizer eehhhh who knows 🤷🏻♂️
But those will always HOLD A VALUE , remember that
Nice ratchet haven't gotten it in comfort grip yet but the kids might have One snapon definitely one of the best but I got the kid's 3 and it was just a guess little under 400 but 1/2" and 3/8" pricey but definitely good.
