    You should always try to drill a hole on the elbow that attaches to the pop up and put gravel on the bottom, otherwise the water left over there will be a petri dish in between rains, dead bugs perfume

      @@TKCL Great job on this whole install - this is beyond the typical DIY city dweller, clearly you are Country :)
      One thing that also wanted to ask you, why didn't you add some intermediate catch basins? Your PVC runs are very lengthy and if you ever need to clean them, it would be impossible. Catch basins in between would have allowed the surface water to drain faster and also provide you with the opportunity to stick a hose and flush any debris.

    Gotta remember the level at the top of the pop up is the level the pipes need to be before water starts to flow out of the pop up and that looks like it would be the entire length of pipe. If it were me I'd just have an open ended pipe so water flows directly onto the yard horizontally. Pops up are used to relieve pressure in instances like being after a rain infiltration reservoir tank in case there is to much water and not used as a primary means of discharge. As water would drain slowly under the rain garden/infiltration once rain stopped and not leave the pipes filled up. Your lowest point in drainage has to be open or else sediment will build up in the pipe.

    • @MikeZMonroe
      @MikeZMonroe 2 роки тому +2

      He done a lot of right things. Schedule 40 and sloping away downhill to open low field all spot on. Agree with the pop up devises. The stream from heavy rains will pop them off, plus any debris will collect there. Running horizontal exits with large stone or brick under exits will disperse heavy flow. But main thing is he’s got a huge side yard to park and dispose the rain water. Gate City Drainage a great UA-cam site for drainage issues.

      Only the last few feet will hold water due to the slope in the pipes. With that said there will always be water in the end and elbows. Not a concern with zero ground freezing in Florida.

    I would put a screw on the side of the pop-up to keep from the mower pulling them up out of the pipe. Maybe a clean out on the upper end of long run. @@TKCL sorry to hear that. Frozen pipes are no fun at all. Fortunately frozen pipes in Florida are generally few and far between episodes. Back in the early 80’s we had an especially hard cold snap the week of Christmas across the Panhandle . My father was the superintendent of the counties freshwater treatment plant at the time. At the time the plant was designed to treat and supply a maximum of around 15 million gallons of water a day. As the cold temps settled in, the volume of water leaving the plant trickled down to a historic low Gallons per Day. The freeze we had lasted for several days and we got into the single digits for a couple of days and the daytime temps didn’t get above 32°.
      When the temps finally warmed up above freezing, they thought they had a major water line that had busted as they had over 25 million gallons of water leaving the plant. It was running way over capacity for its design at the time.
      Turns out it was a combination of all of the pipes that froze and busted across the county that began flowing wide open as result of the extreme cold. I believe it was 1982 when this happened.

    Might not be a big deal for you in Florida, but having a a wye were the gutters enter the ground just in case pipe in the ground gets clogged or frozen. Usually its attached just above grade and then the elbow to turn horizontal so the wye is pointed up. It is a form of plumbing after all so why not install a cleanout for it. The wye is usually capped with a screen or a have holes drilled with a screwed in cap.

    We had a pop up for water draining off our in-ground pool surround/patio/decking area and it worked great. Only issue we had is the dogs figured out how to use it as a chew toy so we had to replace it several times. Also you will have to trim grass from around them and in them, the pop ups almost work like an aquaponics do, at least that happened with us. Just check them as you mow to figure out if it will be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, etc type of trimming/clean out.

    My old house in Illinois was 2600 ft.² with a huge roof. We tried everything including the pop-up drains, it worked well for about a year. We dug and put gravel in and used field tiles to get it away from the house but it was all pretty temporary. You’ll do better because you’ve got sandy soil we had clay but in the end pop-ups broke and would stick up and eventually the mower destroyed them and I found that with this kind of stuff it usually sort of figures itself out, I would do the PVC in the deep area to get it away from the house and then field tile and it will create a little hole in the lawn if it needs to but the grass usually hides it but as long as you can get the water 15 or 20 feet away from the house you’re pretty good what I found most people do is just use an adapter on the end and switch to field tile to get it away from the house if the ends pop up the mower will cut it nice and clean and dig without a song cracking the pipes. If you have more slope There are other options but basically if you can get it 15 or 20 feet from the house And the yard is graded well that’ll work well. I think what you’ve done will be more than enough.
    One suggestion, which is too late now, I found that the pop-ups held a lot of water in them and at ground level I just ended up drilling a hole in the bottom so the water can drain out slowly so it doesn’t grow a bunch of scum and build up in there. Eventually They kind of feel apart anyway So it didn’t matter but You’re using the PVC, So you might want to just get a long drill bit and put a little hole in the bottom so water will leak out after it stops raining, that will also help keep it from freezing hopefully.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  2 роки тому +1

      @@TKCL It will work, the only problem I found is that the water gets kind of gross sitting down inside and as you mow and everything stuff gets stuck in the lid and holds it open and eventually driving the mower over it messed it up. I replaced it once but when it broke again I just left it open and eventually the grass just kind of grew over it and you could barely see it anyway, the other one I did with field tile on iPhone kept clogging up so I dug it up and just left it on top of the ground and ran over it with the mower which trimmed it to ground level and I just left it after that. Hey Andrew. Just saw this video, was gone for a bit and am catching up. Those pop-up fittings are also available at Lowes. They're what I used to pipe the gutter water out away from the house. Just an FYI on them. After a few years, the grass will actually get thicker and will grow over them. Once that happens they no longer pop up and you get back flow at the downspout area. It's fairly easy to clean the grass away, but, it's grown over, where the heck are they? So first make sure you take a few measurements and write down where they are so you can find them again and when you do your mowing take a weed wacker around them every now and then. Looks great.

    About 5 years ago, I did the exact same thing, but all our water travels about 120 feet away from our place and into our pond. During a very hard down-pour, it's amazing how much water is coming through my 4" pipe into the pond. The water going into the pond is from the back of our house and large back porch... roughly 1900 sq feet of roof; two down spouts converging into a single 4" pipe. When I was putting it in, I was wondering if my down-grade was enough to keep the water from backing up. It is, but just barely. During the hardest of downpours, I've seen water coming out of the part where the aluminum down spout connects to the PCV adaptor. It'll be interesting to see those pop-up's during a hard downpour. 👍

If it does become a problem (hope not) i would leave the pop ups but continue the drains 60 feet using the perforated black drain tile wrapped in popcorn peanuts with mesh (no rock needed). I ran my piping down the side of my driveway into the Street curb and that's where it drains out that. How you been handling the cold down there. It's a warming 29° degrees right now. Not even above freezing. I'm about to go see if I can start my truck 🚛 up for a lil bit & let it run for a lil while. You take it easy buddy and I hope you're staying warm.

    Good evening Andrew. I have not read all of the comments, so if I am asking something that has already been asked I apologize. What type of tree is that young tree planted near your septic tank and drain field? From what I can see it looks maybe like an oak tree. If it is may I say from experience, the roots from an oak will be all in your drain field. Food for thought 🤔. Keep up the excellent work and videos. Fan for life. 😀

    Andrew, why not get a pallet of sod, jus enough to do a strip of sod on the 2 sides & the back end of your house next to your concrete pad where you have the pine needles at & around your 5 popups. One piece of sod is usually 20' wide & about 40' inches long. Then plant the same type of seed the sod is when the time comes, that would keep the rain from washing your seed & dirt away around the popups when the grass seed is trying to sprout, It's an thought bc of all the rain you get.

    Every time I comment like this I feel like I'm pissing in your oatmeal but I agree with the man that stated the pop-ups are bad idea your pipes are going to constantly be full of water which is going to give you sediment issues and a good breeding ground for mosquitoes. My perk tests show excellent draining and after speaking with the septic installer he had zero concerns of that area not being able to handle the runoff and drainage. The pop ups seal back down. Nice! Personally all that sandy soil around your house keys on my paranoia. The only change I would add (on my list of things for a house down there should I be able to move there in a couple years) is some french drains around your house also leading into that system. But that's just my paranoia.
    On the output areas around where the water comes out and you see the erosion. Didn't you say that you have some heavy clay like soil somewhere on your property? Get some of that and replace the sandy soil around your outputs for say a 1 meter radius. Embed some rocks in the surface. That should not only resist erosion but be a much better material for grass roots to cling, resist the water and grow thicker around those outputs.
