Congratulations on your new instrument! Early xmas gift to self? It looks and sounds lovely, and I can see the appeal for a guitarist. There's a guitarist who comes to our uke group with his uke-playing partner. After about three weeks as a spectator, he was so keen to join in that he bought himself a baritone!
I've always shied away from them as I own guitars, but in trying to feature more I started to 'get it' - i'm basically playing this as if it were a guitar missing two strings.
Great review, love the looks and agree with the headstock comment. Am seeing more and more slotted headstock first offerings and although I like the tone and wood choice it puts me off. This baritone is lovely, with Flight, they do seem to have a reputation for QC that requires specialists to correct them before selling, which isn’t really fair on them. From a business point of view, If all dealers sent them back or stopped stocking them, bet they would soon sort it. Flight do need to get a grip of this, especially if general Uke community hear it from multiple respectable and knowledgeable people. It actually puts me off buying a Flight and there are a few new releases that really appeal. Have a good week.
Really good review. I love the sound. And I agree about the headstock. I like it better than slotted. I’m not a baritone player but this would be tempting. !! Thanks
Thanks for reviewing this one Baz I've been pondering over this for a while and once again you covered all my questions on this one So I've just ordered one from Matt at world of ukes as I always shop with him too Always get a great set up and service from Matt. Love your reviews Baz Thanks again 👍
Hey I I just received this today with a full advanced set-up, and a top strap button installed on the heel. This is my first Flight uke, and I love it! The craftsmanship, the beautiful shinny gloss, look of the wood , the sound, and tone are absolutely unreal. I am also very happy with this purchase and it is now the pride of my collection. At least until my fourth and final baritone uke comes next week, the Kala 8-string baritone.
@@GotAUkulele I don’t know if violin students, or teachers, for that matter, know the difference between your actual reviews and their ads. Maybe they should all watch your reviews and learn! I’ve heard of students being pressured to buy a certain violin from a certain store, etc. there’s no objectivity.
Nice addition to your uke family! I have a friend who has a baritone. Even over the phone when he plays for me, the sound is so amazing. I'll have to share your review with him.
I love a nice baritone like this one. However, like the Swedish boatpaddle last week, it has one feature I don't take to, which is the small-hole through the bridge stringing. If it was mine, I would have to make the holes bigger and put bridge pins in, which I really like. It would take good nerves to do it on an expensive uke, haha!
@@GotAUkulele My only gripe is that I could not find an exact replacement set, color-wise. The Grovers are nice, of course, but they are solid gold, whereas the Prowels are black and gold. Comparing the parts between the two, IMO the Grover’s are better quality. For example, the Prowels have plastic washers, vs the Grover’s metal ones.
Great video as always! It's funny that you made this particular video right now, as I was ogling over this Flight Baritone for the last few weeks. They have them in stock at a popular online Uke shop here in the states that do thorough inspections before sending them out, and offer full setups for an additional cost. They also have photos of each individual in stock items, so you can pick out the exact one you want. I love the guitar but don't play it very well, and struggle with it quite a bit, so I switched over to the ukulele to build up proper skill. I own a concert and 2 tenors, but never really appreciated the sound of them, especially with the reentrant tuning. When I discovered the Baritone Uke some months back, It was love at first sight, or more accurately, sound, since it had the deeper, bassier sound of a guitar and utilising linear guitar tuning but played with only 4 strings that were much more manageable and made of nylon. It's more comfortable smaller sized package is a joy to play and I now own 3 Kala Baritones, the KA-BG, the KA-SCAC-B and the KA-CM-BE and I am planning on getting the Flight Aurora EQ-A after the holidays. Thanks again for this very welcome video.
I considered a Fireball for a long time but got something different (a tenor, actually) but this baritone seems really nice for the money. May need another baritone after all!
A lovely axe, no doubt. I totally get the desire to noodle about on a guitar-like instrument; I have the same impulse. Your purchase / endorsement is the review. I know you're going to enjoy it.
Flight has really grown and by making good quality innovative ukuleles. There are few flights I don’t like. You can’t go wrong with a flight. I agree I like this headstock better then the open on a ukulele. I like acoustic without the pick up as well. The sound is great. I really like this one.. thanks for another great review!..DOC
Hi Baz, I have a baritone uke that Rob Collins made for me, It’s very plain, with a nod to the Martin dreadnought body and headstock. I’ve had it for years. It’s reentrant tuned with worth clear fluorocarbon strings. It’s made from some kind of mahogany I think,it doesn’t really matter to me, it’s sounds wicked, a specially now it’s nicely played in. I’ll get to my point. Baritone ukes sound like ukuleles to me, very much so when reentrant tuned. 😊I own an Ozark tenor guitar, and that sounds more like a baritone ukulele than a guitar to me, just my 2d worth. I’ll lend you my baritone to review if you like. Steve Edwards 🎅🏻
You really scooped Santa on that one! Looks & sounds like a great deal despite the superfluous pickup. So what if it looks and sounds more toward the gitbox end of the spectrum?
I bought one recently so glad to see I’m in such good company! Like you, I wanted something guitar-ish and it didn’t disappoint. I can confirm that I got mine from a large, well known provider & the set-up was awful.
Ultimately whatever tuning people want is their business - personally don't get it though as the lower tuning takes advantage of the bigger body, but each to their own.
@@nickiemcnichols5397 It's honestly far simpler than people think - bear in mind you already know the chords so nothing more to learn - with a circle of fifths it's just a case of counting. I wrote this on the topic www.gotaukulele.com/2016/09/dont-be-afraid-of-alternative-ukulele.html
One of my strings broke when tuning for the first time. Would you by any change know how to change these kinds of strings? Its hard to find online. Also, how do I prevent this a second time? The D string snapped
Push through hole, fish out of soundhole - tie large knot or attach a bead and pull back. If it is snapping a twist of sandpaper inside the hole or needle file to smooth the edge can help
Nice review Baz - I used this exact uke for all the baritone tracks on my album, laminate snobs aside!
Thanks man! That's interesting. Oh - and a 'certain other' Flight ukulele arrived with me this week...

Yeah - I know it annoys the shops too!
I bought a Snail tenor with a slotted headstock because I liked the look of it. I have found it makes tuning less accurate.
Can't see how that would make a difference? Still transverse gears which can't slip

I totally agree about that pick up. Lovely instrument though thanks for sharing Barry

So many violin teachers get paid for so called “reviews”, it makes me 🤢. Your actual reviews are so refreshing, Baz.
I simply don't get it - how can it be an impartial review if you are paid to do it?

I don't know much about baritone ukuleles, but it sounds and looks great! Congrats on purchasing this beauty!
It really is!
The one I bought came with one really bad tuner and I ended up changing them out with a set of Grovers.
Ouch - always been impressed with Prowel myself

Kinda sounds like a parlour guitar. Cool review !✌🏼
It does! Exactly what I was after!
What a nice instrument! I've been wanting a baritone myself but hate playing on wound strings, can anyone recommend unwound low D baritone strings?
Think they would be massively thick
Can’t they get smooth wound strings?
@@nickiemcnichols5397 thanks for the suggestion, I'll try and find smooth strings that don't make that squeeky noise
Living water makes them. Worth may as well.
@@ukeplayalongs I too don't like wound strings, but personally would be looking at Uke Logic as they do flat wounds.

Curious about the finish is it gloss, satin or open. Personally I don’t like sating because of the chalkboard feel so I use stickers.
Gloss
What do you think about its intonation between the 5th and the 12th/14th fret?
Does it not sound less accurate to you than what a Tenor ukulele would?
No?
That's a good instrument. Well priced, not amazing but I'd buy that
I did!
