  • We are posting this video with some hesitation, as we wish no ill will toward any practitioners mentioned in this video. But, questions continue to arise related to many historical events in Kosho Ryu. Incorrect stories and conjecture continue to be propagated related to Kosho. The stories shared in this recording are from people that were present first hand with James Mitose. Please view this with an open mind. Once again, it is not our intent to create more debate. It is our intent to share the truth.
This recording is part of a series of three recordings with interviews related to this time period. If you have questions related to this history, please watch to the end. The other videos are on www.brucejuchnik.com
If you have any documentation related to James Mitose or about this history, please share with us as we are always looking to better understand the history of our art and of Professor Mitose.
Some of the individuals mentioned in these recordings are now close friends. People change, times change and wounds heal. It is our hope that the Kempo arts continue to flourish and can be united as we are all brothers and sisters. Be open, be humble and continue to grow.
    Yours for World Martial Arts
    Bruce Juchnik, Hanshi SKSKI

The version of history I learned from my Parker lineage instructors accredited Mitose and Chow’s father equally for what eventually lead to the creation of William Chow’s system, now called Kara Ho Kenpo. This is the system that Parker trained in Thad led to the creation of American Kenpo, which was created with Chow’s blessing. I do know that Mitose visited Parker‘s school in Pasadena but I have no idea the nature of the visit. My training began in 1978 and everybody I’ve trained under has always held Mitose in high regard. It wasn’t until recent years through online foreigns did I ever encountered the opposing perspective. To that, I can only reply with saying societies, organizations and the men and women running them will all be imperfect because humans are imperfect. A lot of the politics and drama ends up being based on one negative interaction or another and that experience being shared with one’s students, perpetuating a false image of who somebody was. To this idea, it is not hard to find negative information posted about Ed Parker, James Mitose, William Chow, the Tracy family and the Emperado family. But I personally hold them all in high regard because if it wasn’t for them doing what they did and contributed what they contributed, I would not be alive today. 🙏

My sensei and dear friend Dennis Ernst passed away last weekend. He taught at Dodge City Community College. He taught Kosho Shorei Kempo and always talked about having Bruce Juchnik come out for seminars back in the 80s. Kosho was the foundation of what he taught. His funeral was a couple days ago and on a whim, I decided to look up Kosho on youtube. Lucky enough to find these videos! Seeing this was just posted this past May, I am sure Dennis would of loved to see this. He was very knowledgeable about Kosho and always spoke highly of the seminars.
Question for Hanshi Juchnik, in Mitose's book there are instructional photos with a young Asian lady. My sensei Dennis Ernst would discuss this with me. Forgive my fragmented knowledge as I am trying to remember our discussions. The black belts were of Mitose's family. Is the young Asian lady his sister? She has a black belt in the photos. She isn't listed in the book but apparently there was some reference to his sister. It was Ernst's belief that it was his sister. If his sister a black belt, did she teach at all?
    Thanks for your time!

Thank you for the kind note. Sorry for your loss of your friend/sensei. As to your question, that was his sister. I'm not certain that she was a teacher though. I would love to discuss this with you if you like. You can give me a call at 916-308-2606

As a Parker lineage American Kenpo practitioner since 78, I have often been curious about doing a little cross training in Chow’s Kara Ho Kenpo, and Mitose’s Kosho Ryu Kempo. I have also been curious to learn more about what the crime was that put him in prison as well as the details relating to the crime within the prison that resulted in his death. The particular lineage of instructors but I come under happens to be one that pays a lot of respect to Mitose’s contributions to the art we currently practice every bit as much as they pay tribute to Professor Chow. Are there any Kosho Ryu instructors in northern Utah?

I used to practice with Scott Kneeland, (it's been 15y now), and went to at least two of your seminars out there during my time studying with Scott. I keep an eye out to see if there's a Kosho Ryu school in my area... but they always end up being an unreasonable distance from where I am. But now I'm picky because of my experience with Kosho Ryu, and there's no way I'd be content studying anything else (and I'd have to start over at this point since i've been out longer than the 10y I studied)

Hello Mr. Juchnik, hope you are well. Would you mind if an american kenpo practitioner took part in any of your future European gatherings?
Unfortunately there aren't any Kosho Ryu schools in Ireland but I would be happy to travel to take part in your seminars :)

@@BruceJuchnik Thank you for your reply Mr. Juchnik. Looks like great club :) I mentioned to others here in Ireland about attending next year's European Gathering. So far my instructor is keen :)
I was just wondering what the traditional method is when seeking permission to teach from your instructor. Being American Kenpo theres nothing to stop me from doing it, I just wanted to do it the old fashioned way. Is it as simple as just asking or would there have been a procedure predating Parkers American Kenpo?
      Thank again,
      Mark

My god, a lot of drama!

    • @paulcanchola6377

The greater Kenpo/Kempo community is loaded with politics and drama. I come from the American Kenpo system which is famous for how political it became as well as the drama involving the politics following Mr. Parker‘s death. But you will find drama and politics between the Parker and Tracy systems, there’s politics between those systems and professor Chow’s Kara Ho Kenpo, And a great deal of politics and drama surrounding the debate over how much of influence James Mitose had in the Chow system, Which would of course affect the ongoing debate as to how much of that influence trickle down into the American Kenpo system. And now that American Kempo has fragmented in the week of Mr. Parker‘s death, how many different associations were formed by his most senior students, each going slightly in their own direction. Some of them dramatically going in their own direction. Belonging to the American Kenpo/Parker lineage, I personally find it invaluable and desirable to at least cross train in the various systems that played a historic role in the formation of my system. Every child benefits from getting to know their grandparents and great grandparents.

Why does the Bugei Ryuha Daijiten 武芸流派大事典 list the founder of Kosho Ryu as James Mitose if it really was an ancient Japanese tradition?

Someone having a shaved head with Dragon and Tiger tattoos on the inside of his forearms means that he took that from the 1972 Kung Fu tv series

I was influenced by the work of Ed Parker. In the first book of his Infinite Insights Into Kenpo series, there’s a picture of a Shaolin monk picking up a burning urn after passing the final test in order to graduate from the Shaolin Temple. Honestly, I’ve never even seen David Carradine in the 1972 show “Kung Fu” until after I got my tattoos.

@@ryandemarest3202 I was a toddler when I first started watching Kung Fu on ABC-TV in the early 70's before it later aired in repeats in the early 80's. That show would've been even better if it had been called The Warrior starring Bruce Lee since that was originally his project.

We respected him as if he is a Saint...Then again as years passed, I have learned that maybe the history he presented was a false history...As an Asian, I realize that to give something "credibility and authenticity", the key piece of the lie must talk about something being ancient while it is not...Another thing: If something is copied from something else, the original has to be poo poo'ed...(Side Note: Same thing about Thailand history. It's all a lie and made up. Modern Thai state claimed its origin as Altai Mountain in Mongolia/Russia, but that's a lie...Then it claims direct lineage to Yunnan China, and direct blood DNA genetic connections... False again... Only the language is the link...not the bloodline... Just similar to Haiti claiming to be French, but that's not true. Africa slaves now free just use French language...same thing with French, Spanish, German, and Dutch speaking black Africans in Africa...They are not descendants, but just use the language...Same thing here in modern day Thailand...Lies... BUT I REGRESSED)... Another thing about James Mitose: He fathered many children, and did not care for them...He put them up for adoption...Thomas Mitose Barrow was raised by a White family...Some father James Mitose was... Finally, most of you probably did not know that he either managed or owned Brothels? He was also a LOAN SHARK taking advantage of fellow Japanese, either new immigrants or those who lived in the U.S. for a while...Then there is a controversy about 1 of his disciple who was sent to collect a debt from an Elderly Japanese man, and ended up killing the man... This Disciple is Terry Lee...He later changed his name to Hassan, and ran / runs some kind of a Kempo school out on the East Coast....Probably close to retirement, or has retired by now... That's not to say that what James Mitose taught was INVALID... I thank him for being the proginitor of my brand of Kempo...and I have to say that today's American branches of Kempo are a mixed bag of many martial arts, repackaged, marketed, and sold... Then again most martial arts are eclectic including Japanese Karate, Okinawan Karate, modern Filipino Martial Arts that has incorporated throws and groundfighting, and Muey Thai (That's really Cambodian boxing rebranded and marketed)...and the list goes on an on... So, learn the principles behind the wazas...I appreciate Bruce for doing just that because he teaches the underlying principles, and so does/did my Sensei...Once you know the principles, everything makes sense from strikes, throws, groundfighting, escape, locks-chokes, and vulnerable points on the anatomy.
