Thanks for sharing another helpful video. I bought an Optimum Froothie high speed blender (like a Vitamix) but tend not to make smoothies now - I still make soups but then I’ve always done that. In the early days you have to be on a low residue (fibre-free) diet anyway, in order to rest the bowel and let it heal, but my stoma nurse told me when to start introducing fibre. My surgeon told me from the outset that eventually I should be able to eat just about everything, and this has been the case. I make my own bread and put loads of seeds in, and I eat nuts and enough veggies that I’m surprised I haven’t started sprouting leaves! Also buckets of fruit. 5 a day? More like 20 a day!! The secret is to chew, chew, chew everything. My theme tune became the Chattanooga Choo Choo lol! The only food I avoid is sweet corn because it goes through you virtually unchanged and comes out like bullets, and could cause an obstruction. Otherwise, anything goes. I realise not everyone is the same and I am probably one of the more fortunate ones but if you don’t try, you won’t know. Good advice to start small and see how it goes, and if all is well, increase it. Life with a stoma is good - much better than before for me!

Really good info! I've had 7 bowel surgeries, including 3 ileostomies, due to Ulcerative Colitis. My last surgery was November 25th, 2015 and I now have a permanent ileostomy. I have found that I'm not only able to eat veggies and nuts again, but also able to exercise intensely again. Prior to my first surgery, I was a competitive amateur kickboxer. I still train regularly, and have even improved my skillset and flexibility, as well as stregth.
There is life after bowel surgery, and we all have it in us to realize our goals!

I've found with my ileostomy that my energy level is lower, I still do things but not nearly like I did before the surgery, is that common because I try to keep electrolytes in me

I find I have more energy... but make sure to eat bananas, sodium, and plenty of water.

STOMATHELETE What an inspirational story. So glad to hear how well you have done. I had ulcerative colitis too, followed by colon cancer, and had my ostomy surgery in 2015 as well, and have had 2 further surgeries for (unsuccessful) repair of parastomal hernia. Now awaiting possible further surgery. I am unable to exercise at all because I have ME and am partially disabled, but I eat extremely well with loads of fruit and veggies. A positive attitude is our best asset, I think!

I had surgery 1 mth ago & read on my ostomy guide book that cranberry juice ( which I love) helps not 2 get hydrated. Lord & behold drank about 4 oz & output was so watery, constant. Next day, I was physically drained. What juices, how much should I drink 2 prevent so much output, it's frustrating, bothersome 2 me. I have a difficult mental time adjusting 2 my stoma. Help! With any advice that can turn Negatively to Positive. God bless.

Is it easier to put on weight with an ileostomy, or does it seem to make weight gain more difficult versus having a colon? I've been looking at various forums and it seems people either tend to lose a lot after surgery or gain a ton. I'm headed for an ileostomy soon (not IBD related, but due to complications of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome), and am worries about how my body will respond. Two other concerns are that I'm raw vegan (I eat mainly fruits and veggies/greens, no grains, starches, etc), and these foods seem to be contraindicated, so I'm not sure how to adapt my diet..my other concern is related to weight lifting and yoga, which are the two physical activities I enjoy and that help with my joint hypermobility from the Ehlers-Danlos, yet doing ab work and anything that requires baring down (which happens with wt lifting) could cause bad issues with the stoma.
I also have gastroparesis/slow transit and worry that this might affect how the food moves thru the small intestines and into the bag.
Any advice/thoughts/ideas on these fears of mine? I'm really scared for this surgery.

Do you eat mushrooms? It's the only thing I haven't ever messed with in my 7 years with an ileostomy, after a stoma nurse scared me half to death with mushroom-blockage horror stories.

Yeah I eat mushrooms but only small amounts.

juju hermit I have a friend who avoids mushrooms like the plague, but I eat them frequently with no problems. I make sure I chew my food really really well and drink loads of fluids too. I make up my own rehydration drink and have a litre of that every day as well as normal drinks. I know mushrooms can be a problem because they are so fibrous but for me they are fine.

Well I hope you are still with us! I am 59 and felt the same way, but usually it was REALLY bad when I was waking up because of nightmares. Once I got going though I started feeling better. When I first got the colostomy I was in between waking and dreaming and I was pulling my guts out by my stoma to kill myself. That and many more, but it's going away little by little. I'm about a month and a half in. I hope your doing well.

Rita Duarte I hope by now you are feeling a lot better with your stoma. I have had mine 4 years now. I found that giving it a name really helped - mine is called Kermit! - it helps you make friends with it. Also, cultivating an attitude of gratitude helps because after all, your stoma has saved your life. There is nothing you can do about that red blob on your belly - it’s there for keeps - but you CAN do something about the grey mass between your ears! Every time you get a negative thought you can take it captive and replace it with a positive one. This is a major lifestyle change but the emphasis is on LIFE. All the best!
