    I grew up in Williamsburg Brooklyn, I am not Jewish, but I have a lot of Jewish friends. Their grandmothers use to teach me Kosher cooking and the receipts for many of the holiday dishes. I drove my parents crazy by taking over the kitchen and making challah bread and cinnamon buns. In my family, males are forbidden to cook I was the only male that actually cooked. It came to the point that my family and friends would prefer me to do the cooking. I started at 7 years old and I still cook and bake. Not bad for an African American! Thank you for bringing back such fond memories.

    Jamie,just a suggestion.If you smear cooking oil on the dough before applying the sugar cinnamon mixture you may find the cinnamon buns not as dry and it helps dissolve the sugar.

    Jamie, do you have a recipe for geyornes? It's like cinnamon buns - but it isn't the rolled up dough kind. My Bubby, may she rest in peace, used to make them, I never got the recipe, and I have not been able to find one in my many years of searching.

    I was just wondering, about the icing, I've done it with milk instead of water. Is there any reason that would not be Kosher? I was raised Baptist and I don't have a clue about mixing dairy and other things.

    • @jamiegeller
      @jamiegeller  7 років тому +4

      You can for sure use milk and it would be kosher, but it is not kosher to eat dairy after meat. Since many people might want to eat this after a meat meal we like to keep it non-dairy. So glad you are enjoying our videos - feel free to ask any questions.

    Good tip to not let the dough rise, or else it is a bit drier. Thanks!

      @@jamiegeller Challah, of course, but can you suggest anyone, anywhere, beyond Orwashers who might be willing to share the recipe??! I live in Canada, close to Toronto, and there is no one, no bakery, no bubie, no zaidy, that I know, around here, who knows the recipe for hard crust caraway rye the way it was traditionally made! If you're unable, I forgive you.......you will still be wonderful!!! and I will still love your videos!!! Shalom!!

    Jamie, Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you!! WOW!! ok - geyornes are like cinnamon twists, using - I think - a challah dough, but they aren't like cinnamon buns - and no icing. When they were ready, it looked very bumpy on top - those were the individual pieces and you pulled off separate sections and the cinnamon and sugar were in between the sections. It wasn't gooey like yours at all. She baked them in this huge pan the size of her oven. It comes from Russia I believe - my Bubby and Zaida were from there.

    No, not water for the icing. Use almond, rice or soy milk.
