- Opening titles and a little bit more of Play Your Cards Right. This is from Friday 29 August 1986 and would have been the first airing of the new LWT ident on the ITV Network. The continuity comes from a youthful Julian Simmons of Ulster Television.

In vision announcers were a jewel in the crown of regional television and built a strong bond with the viewers that was more effective than any expensive branding or promotional efforts. It seemed quaint to visitors (like me in the late 1980s) who came from other regions where it had been disposed of, but its value was recognised instantly by the locals. Note that UTV has brought back IVC in prime-time even now, and indeed it's this very gentleman still doing the shifts!
The good old days when ITV companies' logos would be at the beginning of each programme!
They were the days! Brill times
And also the first time LWT have unveiled their new logo replacing the previous one used since 1978.
My brother and I used to bet on what company made the next programme - didn’t always help when it was one of the following:
A film;
An imported programme from America or Canada or Australia or New Zealand;
One of Tyne-Tees’s own productions!
By about the early 90s, every ITV programme was made by Granada or Carlton, regardless of where it is set - now, everything is made by “ITV Studios!”.
We all remember Bruce Fer-syth with play YOUR cards... riigghht.
The original theme tune! So much better than the last one.
d d d d ..Nice to see you, to see you..(sweep of arms, clap hands) nice. What a marvelous audience, so much better than last week. (scowl at camera 2).
Loved this theme tune, can’t beat the originals. Somewhere I’ve got the clean music and separate cues from back when my partner worked at LWT.
RIP Brucie ♣️♥️♦️♠️
I gone all misty-eyed! looking at this reminds me of those friday nights; first this, then the Fall Guy, followed by Auf Wiedersehen pet.
Got good taste for a Friday Evening's viewing,Mate!.
@@darryllharden9141 Yeah, shows you the higher quality TV back then don't it? It was a bit earlier than this though, around 1983, (because I remember being about 12 - the age of this comment actually - good god!) as it was Max Bygraves or 1st time Bruce hosted it.
In its heyday (around 1981), this was one of the few gameshows that was actually quite popular. Just about everybody watched it.
UncleFeedle It started in 1980
Nice clip.love those old itv regional idents.
I remember this on a Friday night before something like either Airwolf or TJ Hooker.
Here is my wig my wig is here
@psammiad Well incidentally the continuity is from UTV [Ulster Television], and in 2011 they STILL have in-vision continuity, I guess not being part of ITV plc has its advantages.
Bruce F'syth with Play YOUR Cardsright
Fer-Syth apparently. Never heard of him myself.
0:57 scared him to death
Having viewed the original version on TV Ark, I'm not convinced that the old ident was any less serious-seeming, or edited any tighter onto the titles than the new one. It does fit much better in terms of the visual style than this bright white one though!
oh man that's the one. LE doesn't get better than this. The devastating opening sequence and a bunch of pretty girls escorted onto the stage by a handsome man (not Bruce).
And what's at the end? From the ghosting it looked like the little clips of key parts were edited at the time. Is that a collector's record?
@psammiad Borders, Tyne tees still had in vision CA until 1995/6. Grampian had them until 1997. STV, Thames, Anglia still had until the start of 1989. only central, LWT and tvs had them gone by 1986. Yorkshire never had them,
Border still had IVC in prime time right up until 1999: ua-cam.com/video/-O3pIuWuOHw/v-deo.html It was abandoned in the autumn of 1999 when the generic "Hearts" idents were introduced and continuity switched to Leeds which was already doing the rest of the Granada owned regions in the north.
Did the continuity anouncer go to the William Shatner school of pronunciation or something ?
Compare Julian Simmons here to his future self 20 years later... ua-cam.com/video/6kqkavY6nFU/v-deo.html
Ulster TV Julian Simmons let's just say he was well known for being a bit camp . I loved seeing him.

Very 80's. Nice wig
@MQsCues and very funny he is too! Andddd now on the UTV....
He usually does corrie. When im not in london im with my family in n ireland and we are all visibly upset when he isnt doing the into to corrie!
The sub-plot is that the slappers are supposed to fancy old wiggie, eh?
@morgansifer82 It would - the non-descript smattering of a grey background, the faux-3D animation, and the horrid drop-shadow would just look shit.
I think young Julian mis-emphasises the name of the show as well as the star's name. It's a wonder he was kept on at UTV really!
He actually got Brucie’s name correct - it is pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable. You’re right about the strange emphasis on the word “Your” in the programme title though!
@@CaptainSiCo Plenty of examples online of Bruce pronouncing his own name with the emphasis on the first syllable!
Yes, I appreciate that. But there’s also an interview (GMTV, I believe) where he tells the interviewer that the correct pronunciation is with the emphasis on the latter syllable.
@@CaptainSiCo very interesting... And slightly bizarre then that he used the wing pronunciation of his own name. Showbiz eh
play YOUR cards right with BRUCE forsyth...strange emphasis on these words?
Funny its such a 70s sounding intro tune, it was dated even at the time! It's funny to see an actual continuity announcer too, I'm sure that had already been done away with on English networks by 86.
Bruce who? lol
why did they need 4 dealer-girls?
i'm wondering the same thing... and also for the American version(s) too, why would they need dealers if the hosts sometimes flipped the cards themselves?
In vision announcers..dear me...plus I think he's anamatronic.
You should see Julian Simmonds introducing Coronation Street
@@ziyaadjamil2324 obviously he wasn't as camp back then.
Bruce Fuhsythe with Play Yourcards Right. I'm the worst announcer ever and I'm on camera to boot.
He was quite wooden, wasn't he?
MagikGimp He improved with age.
MagikGimp Now if it was me I'd have said '...and now, the leader of the pack's back in Play Your Cards Right.'
Mini Mort 2 You'd have read what the script had said.
As an announcer you would write your own script and work it to fit the exact time you're given.
