Yes. I think all of us of a certain age feel that way. TV hero, bless him. You always got the feeling that he was about to burst out laughing and take all the others with him. Such warmth!
I grew up with this as a child of the 70`s it was magic (never did me any harm) , my children grew up with the telly tubbies (if that's the correct spelling) who couldn't even speak English, so in fairness, we have not progressed....long live Brian Cant, a top bloke.....
Yes.A BBC Product. But what entertainment he gave. I wish they would bring it back. With Celebrity Editions. I reckon it would be quite good in the ratings. With Jonathan Cohen.
Love this. I have such fond memories of Brian Cant, but it’s also fascinating to see a young Tony Robinson at work. And it boggles the mind how they got through that song! Not only do you have to remember the words, it takes brilliant timing. I feel like I’ve just had a workout just by listening to it!
You know, looking at these clips from those dark and distant days of the '70s makes me very emotional. I was a kid when I was watching this. Many of my family were still alive. Now? Time can be cruel. if I had the power, I wish I could turn back time, and never leave it. I hate this society we live in now, seriously. I must stop watching these clips from my past, just makes me feel even more depressed. Yet I can't help myself. Lol.
If I tried for the rest of my life to sing this, I couldn't. Amazing. Such talented people. Might not be to everyones taste, but it is an amazing thing to do. Brilliant.
Aaah Brian, you were so wonderful, you have no idea how much you made my childhood a happy one. I adored you. You were warm, funny, engaging and utterly lovable. Wish you'd been my Dad
I thought it was Tony Aitken, who does the "Pity Poor Tom" speech in Blackadder II while hopping around the graveyard when Blackadder gets threatened by Bishop of Bath & Wells. Was also in Open All Hours
@Jeet27 Indeed. Toni Arthur, Brian Cant, Floella Benjamin, Carol Leader, Fred Harris and all the others, still remembered, still loved. Can you honestly say that the screaming maniacs that pass for children's TV presenters nowadays will still be remembered in 25 months, let alone 25 years?
Ah, the wonderful Brian Cant, who will be greatly missed. I didn't know Tony Robinson was in Playaway! But you do get a few frames at the end of this video of another cast member who went on to notable things: Jeremy Irons.
Now great TV for bored adults. I was a boy/teenager when this was first dropped onto BBC2 and immediately "got it". The whole thing's a send up - these actors are all about larging it up, with the bloody cheek of being paid licence fees to do it. How sweet it was. Brian Cant was hysterical - should have been Tom Baker's successor as Dr Who. Bite on the quality of his Trumpton narrations, pick a ripe snippette of Dappledown Farm, luxuriate in Play Away's masterclass of whimsy. Enjoy.
He had already been in Doctor Who twice. Once in the William Hartnell story The Daleks Master Plan(one of the surviving episodes still exists)and in the Patrick Troughton story The Dominators which exists in its entirety although sadly Brian is killed off rather quickly but you can still tell from the scenes that are left he was a fine actor. Yeah I can see he would have been a good Doctor Who.
What fabulous memories. Playaway was a staple in our house... hee hee..... I also remember Rolf Harris singing and I had to slow the 'Record down' just to work out what was being sung... Love it love it... jolly good clean fun... :0)x

Remember this well I used to go in my next door neighbours house to watch it in colour because we had black & white tv but most people had black & white tv's in them days but it's BS what the media say about the 70's it was a great decade the best .
We always had colour TV growing up in the early 80's but it's true there was a lot of Black and White telly sets still around then. I'm not sure when B/W sets finally went out of fashion but they must've lasted well in to the 1980's?
nobody says anything about the 70s because it's always overshadowed by the much more culturally significant decades of the 60s and 80s that surround it, but that's not to say many people criticize it
@@andknuckles101 Bagpuss was 1974. Wasn't he culturally significant? Seriously though, I was born in 65 and although I like a lot of 70s music, it's the late 60s and early 80s stuff that is closest to my heart and makes me want to go back. Even though the eighties were crap in most other respects.
Yep!! He was also on Play School. Actually he's not the only famous person to appear on Kids TV before they were actually famous. One major example is Hugh Fraser who was in Rainbow in the days before Rod, Jane and Freddy. (I can't remember what the group was called, but he did a bit of a song and dance act along with two others.) Later of course Hugh Fraser became better known as Hastings in Poirot and Wellington in Sharpe.
Don't know if I've mentioned it on this vid before, but he had a cameo role in a John Wayne cop movie in the 70s. I think it was Brannigan as it was set in London.
Wonderful clip, thanks! I always loved Brian Cant and so did my two sons when they were little. Bric a Brac was a great favourite as well as Trumpton etc. We went to see Brian in the stage show he did with pianist Jonathan Cohen. Great entertainment.
Play school started it then play away came along, I had a gay friend when I was around six who loved the musical theatre of that show. I invited him to my wedding years later, he came alone giving us a rose bowl, never heard from him again.
Absolutely brilliant, when kids programmes were actually FUN, and there wasn't an "agenda" or any of this PC nonsense. Also nice to see Baldrick, aged 10, and what a great haircut he had. I remember this being on, and watching it, and trying to sing the song. And NO scouse accents or wacky regional dialects on show anywhere.
now i love the bbc english accent as much as the next person but what do you have against the scouse and other "wacky regional dialects"? that's borderline fascist
This is so good on such a number of levels. I still come back if I need cheering up. I love how Tony's laugh causes Toni to almost break down. Also, the fact that these guys had probably one rehearsal before recording, just shows what professionals they are 🙂
@fletch61 Back atcha! 'Playaway' was indeed most amusing for us adults (and it got even better after a couple of good tokes, too). By Jove, he certainly entertained my childhood too. I remember him very well, even over 40 years later (I am now fifty one!)

Rest In Peace Brian Cant. Thank You for a fun childhood watching TV in the 1970's.

Did Baldrick have a cunning plan to sing that song at 100 mph? I don't think that I could cope with that speed as I wouldn't have any breath left!!!

I could have done so many naughty naughty things to her
Why, do are you a marksman with a gun?
Use to watch this after the pub on a saturday afternoon !
Yes. Not just you! My dear old Dad, loved it!
Tony Robinson looks like Charles Hawtrey from the Carry On films.
I thought Patrick Troughton from _Doctor Who_ was the closest comparison...!
I thought it was Tony Aitken, who does the "Pity Poor Tom" speech in Blackadder II while hopping around the graveyard when Blackadder gets threatened by Bishop of Bath & Wells. Was also in Open All Hours
I thought the same 😀
I was thinking Patrick Troughton (who'd recently been Dr Who!)
@@MrPoupard He did have a similar hair style to Patrick. Looked like Tony's dress sense was influenced by Dr Who too.

R.I.P.. As so many here have said before me, Brian, you WERE a legend both on this & Play School.
Toni Arthur....I was about 12 here, and I was so head over heels in love with that woman :( And hey....there's Baldrick with them.
I was under 10 at the time and remember Toni Arthur very well. Did Baldrick have a cunning plan to entertain the nation's youth?
R.I.P Brian Cant.

Brian Cant was born just six months after my father's cousin Janet (her birthday was 10th January). She lived a further four years!

This was the TV they showed me as a child, it's no wonder I turned out like I did.
At first glance I actually thought Tony Robinson was Patrick Troughton from Doctor Who!!
definitely!!

BRIAN CANT NOT ONLY PLAY SCHOOL AND PLAY AWAY BUT ALSO CHIGLEY TRUMPTON AND CAMBERWICK GREEN....... RIP YOU TALENTED MAN YOU..
What are Saturday Afternoons now. That was the theme,Doesn't really matter if it's Rain or Shine.

Hamble and Dapple the horse
