I love this ,my uncle Frank Vicari toured with Waits .played sax,Fitz Jenkins on bass and Chip White on drums NYC musicians and are on the Foreign Affairs album.I saw the band and met Tom in 1976 they played at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach CA. it was the first time I for me and went to some of the New York City concerts also I was 24 years old then and have enjoyed Tom Waits all the music all my life .I was a merchant seaman from 1978 till Jan.2014 now retired 61 years old love the life I saw the world while there were still ships that spent some time in port, steered many a ship as a able seaman and my foreign affairs were with beautiful women I met and became my friends for life.I have not seen Tom Waits since then but did get to hang out with him a few times and many times with my uncle Frank ,my thanks for sharing your music .
Tommy Oneill Hello ,I never shipped out from the Boston union hall when I started shipping in 1978 Brooklyn ,New York was the union hall I used, and in 1984 I started using the Wilmington CA. union hall until retiring in 2014 . I shipped deep-sea vessels in the deck dept. as an able-seaman and worked Crowley Tugs a few times.I loved going to sea until the port time got to be limited so going ashore to enjoy the seaman life like in the good old days is gone, and there is so much other bullshit that the sailors now are required to do I am happy to be retired living in California.
As I understood " the nickel" was a place where the poor and drifters/ homeless stay. Beautifull song please listen also to " Kentucky avenue" it give also tears in the eyes. Its about his youth . Also he speaks over an handicaped friend. Told take off the bracelet and weelchair.
@@donaldduck2801 On the "Blue Valentines" album (1978), look it up everyone. The third one i bought after having heard "Rain Dogs" when new, kinda made me understand where it was all came from when i read some back story on that song and realizing he actually used bits and pieces of his memories in some at first glance strung-out lyrics. Genius.
I caught two shows with Mr. Vicari playing sax with Waits in the mid-seventies. The first at a small venue in Champaign, IL and then a few months later at the Ivanhoe in Chicago. Excellent! It came to my mind at the time that Frank's life on the road must have been trying, and his compensation minimal. It really pleased me that Tom rewarded him by choosing him to reprise his role and play as a studio musician on "Foreign Affairs."
freddy fedora Frank enjoyed his life and was playing sax in the big bands like Woody Herman,Maynard Ferguson, and on a few of John Lennon,s albums, also Leslie West they were good friends and Frank played with him and so many other musicians he was a New York City jazz musician his life was rewarding he loved what he did,my uncle and friend I loved my Father and his brother Frank were the two men that I thank God to have these two really cool guys to enjoy in my life.
I'm late in discovering Waits .. Thank God for pbs.PBS.. as my friends and I have had a hard time figuring out my style of playing music and wht genera I fit in. And why most say they can't play with me as they don't understand wht I'm doing. Only wish I could've seen him live .love him

An overused millennial cliche… but hey man: word.
Simply beautiful.True, gritty, honest storytelling wrapped in a tantalizing soul piercing melody. What a guy.

THE MOST CREATIVE ARTIST IN THE WORLD

.....Damn right.
Bueno, eso está claro. Pero si no lo decimos no corre el riesgo de convertirse en un artista mayoritario.

Muchas gracias por compartir !!!
i like the reflection of the guy photographing the album on the cover, using "retro" equipment it looks like, circa 2007 or so?
If I ever release an album I'll make the cover art look like that.
Sheer, pure genius.
