I adore sennelier! The translucency is what drew me initially. Sennelier is my favorite European brand and Davinci-American Journey is my favorite American.
I agree that Sennelier is good for layering and I have this palette... What I noticed is that Caput Mortuum and Raw Sienna are labled wrong in your palette. The color that is labled as Caput Mortuum is Raw Siennna and they put the color in the wrong pan when it got packaged. But Caput Mortuum is a violet earth red that is also a lovely mixing color. I like to mix it with Cinereous Blue or Cerulean Blue for greys.
I absolutely ADORE Sennelier! They make two of my favorite colors of ALL TIME: Chinese Orange and Greenish Umber. Maybe your pans were old when you bought them? Maybe that's why they didn't seem to come out so punchy? I have only used the tubes so I have not had to experience the way the formula is when it's in the factory made pans. I have made my own pans and they are still just as amazing as out of the tube. And yes, I swatch my palettes and keep the sheet inside my palettes, you are not alone!
I love my pan set of Sennelier and use it for portraits and I can layer and layer and they just look better and better with each pass rather than looking overdone. So when I started to run low on the pans I bought tubes to refill them and got a few more colors and the difference between tubes and pans is WOW. I usually use Holbein for when I need more thickly applied and opaque work, and now with the tubes I can take Sennelier from glazing and layering with pans and use straight from the tubes for gorgeous color in one pass. The best way to use Sennelier is tubes; pour some into a pan and let cure so it can be used sheer and translucent but keep the tubes near for when you need a punchier version of that color. Incredible quality with the honey- they’re sooooo smooth.
Yes to what you talk about at around 33 mins in. These are for layering and glazing. They are not for the one layer swooshy loose florals. But man, they layer so beautifully. Almost impossible to overwork. And on hot press paper they are even better. Their olive green and Forest green are fabulous for landscapes.
I agree with everything you said. Hot press paper is absolutely the best place to watch them shine (literally). I think a lot of people expect to do loose, punchy florals on cold press paper and when these don’t deliver like a Daniel Smith or Winsor & Newton in that environment, it’s taken as a weakness of the paint when that isn’t the case.
I agree fully. These are spectacular on hot press and layered …. When I did my swatches of them, I did larger squares and three layers. The layers are laid out so i can see each paint in 1, 2, or 3 layers on the swatch card. This style of swatching really showed me so much. These are by far my favorite brand and i love the subtlety, luminosity, and character of these paints. Using them has made me a better painter. Thank you for this wonderful video.

@@Pointebrush Please do use it for a video demo! It’s so informative to see the way the layering works, not just in single layer swatches but also using two different colors in two or more layers. So many possibilities here! Just make sure to let each layer dry fully before glazing again. These paints do require patience to really reveal their magic. And it is a very special magic, indeed. I love Sennelier watercolour paints. The misunderstanding about these paints is that they are for glazing. I am a floral artist and my type of art uses glazing primarily Sennelier paints are made for subtle colors that you build on to for that realistic look. These paints are not for the WOW factor but with a few layers, they get more intense. They rewet beautifully as they are made with honey but aren't sticky as M. Graham watercolour paints that do not dry completely if put in pans. I hope you will come to appreciate your set of Sennelier watercolour paint set. Take another look at what they are best at glazing. All the best !!!

Yep, that’s what I use them for. With the exception of a couple of colours (sennelier yellow deep sucks) I like them very much. On the other hand, I dislike most of Daniel Smith….with the exception of a few that are useful……it’s so dependent on what we use them for. Thank goodness there are so many brands available so we can pick and chose as needed. It’s a problem if you are somewhere where you can only get one brand though. It’s always a shock to me how much the same pigment can vary across brands though. Not interchangeable although logically it seems like they should be.
I love my Senneleir paints comined with a fine tip black ir brown ink pen for travel watercolors. They give a wonderful sense of immediency to my watercolor sketches.
I also love Sennelier and i suggest you try tube paints. Totally different class I think. The only thing I don't like about them is the fact that some colours never dry when put in pans. Which leads me to conclusion that formulation of their pans and tubes are different. I also just adore their Caput Mortum colour.
I was going to say, I have only ever used them in tube form--I'm one of those weirdos that likes painting fresh from the tube. I have NEVER had an issue with Sennelier letting me down or being anything other than a sheer delight. They aren't an M.Graham level pigment bomb, but they are a similar consistency being as both brands are so heavily honey-based. That high honey concentration is likely why Sennelier isnt drying down in a palette for you. Honey draws moisture to it out of the air, right? I have to imagine that if there is enough honey in the binder it would have the same effect in paint--and with the anti-pathogenic properties it won't be consumed by little bitty buggers. 🦠
Sennelier is my go-to brand. It is my understanding that the tubes are better than the pans. Since I don't care for panned paint, I have many Sennelier tubes. There is no way for me to pick favorites. 😅
Sennelier was my first watercolor love when I started painting in 2016. I started with the Aqua Mini and went from there. I own almost the entire line at this point. I even bought the 48-pan set because I found it on sale at Jackson's. So I have it all and still love it. My top 10 (11): Yellow Sophie, Yellow Lake, Senn. Yellow Deep, Red Orange, French Vermillion, Scarlet Laquer, Senn. Red, Cinerous Blue, Rose Dore Madder Lake, Opera Rose, and Helios Purple.

@@Niigishi_ Look for the Aqua Mini on sale. It's a fine little set to start with, although the Burnt Sienna is a bit disappointing. The rest are marvelous. I took the Aqua Mini and removed the half pans. If you remove the thing the pans sit in, you can get many more half pans in there. I spray painted the inside of the small container with white enamel to create mixing space, and it was perfect, compact and all one needs. I have nearly all of the line of Sennelier colors now and can use any combination of colors a project requires. I'm not as big a fan of Holbein, though I have a few tubes. I love Sennelier. I also love Daniel Smith, M. Graham, and others, but Sennelier was my first love. You'll find your own preferences.

I have that set as well and love it but I also found making my own swatch sheet was valuable. I added four more colours to my set which were: Sennelier Grey, Greenish Umber, Blue Violet and Olive Green. I put the watch sheet through my Xyron double laminated machine to protect it.
I’m so glad you’re giving sennelier another chance. I was shocked to hear you say you weren’t impressed a while back. I just love the creaminess and richness. And I’m a bright color lover! Da Vinci probably my favorite but I could pick favorites from every professional line.
Hi Nell! Yes! Each of them have their place and purpose. It’s like saying salt is better than pepper. Both are useful but you can’t expect salt to do pepper’s job and vice versa. Each brand has intrinsic properties that are specific and yield individual results 👍
I put these cards in my palettes as well. I hold them to the same side you did, but i use thin round magnets (just two). That makes it easy to take the card out to stand it up somewhere other than the palette top or to look at a swatch closer to an existing color if i want to.
I only have one Sennelier paint, which is 'Sennelier Red'. It's a pyrrohl (sp?) red and I still remember the thrill I got when I first swatched it - so intense, so glide-y! Gorgeous! It's still the mid-red I use on my palette.
Sennelier is a brand of beautiful watercolors that give great rewards to both advanced and beginner watercolorists, IMO. Beginners can do worse than start right out of the gate with Sennelier Aquamini, which presents 8 great colors at a very reasonable price for those who want to paint things like botanical subjects. For the more experienced, committed, and patient artist, the Sennelier wooden case of ~100 tubes is a revelation. The consistency of the wet paint does require more patience and work, imo. That is because of the binder and honey. You can glaze forever with these paints, and if you aren’t into glazing, the colors appear more subtle, more muted than say, Qor, DS, or Rosa Gallery. I find when I switch up from my Sennelier paints to my Schmincke paint, the latter just seems so much easier to work with quickly somehow. But, patience is a virtue, they say, and I do love my Sennelier paints with all their subtleties. I think they are great paints for people who tend to overwork things.

I have the Caput mortuum (PR 101) and the Terre de Sienne Brulée (PBr 7) from Sennelier and they are the correct colour, not like what you have swatched. They look like they've been interchanged. I really like the Sennelier ones, they are soft (not grainy) and bright at the same time a bit like the Rembrandts, a European characteristic. The only colour I don't like is Sap Green, which is opaque and dull.
i adore my sennelier paints! i live in the desert so they actually dry just as good as my other brands! the half pans for sure and even the tubes i have added dry good too. i have their phlao and cobalt turquoise in tubes and there was a little seperation in the cobalt turquoise but they are just so gorgeous. my favorite turquoises for mixing leaf colors : )

My first experience with watercolor was with Windsor and Newton……rarely use them now…..but because I was interested and took classes in botanical illustration…..I came across Sennelier. they are beautiful watercolors! Clean colors with a pure feel to them….they layer very well. Ultimately Schmincke became my favorite overall……with Daniel Smith blues and greens and Holbein as well. Thank you for doing this…..will get my set out and replay this a few times and swatch with you!
Congrats 🎉 on giving these another chance @pointebrush. Indeed, these colours are super transparent and they layer so well. You do need to get to know these colours to appreciate what they do. I often get frustrated when colours become dull after glazing, but @sennelier is an exception. I enjoyed your commentary of each colour so much -esoecially how you find things that are occur in nature with that colour (like your abundant pinecones). I look forward to seeing more paintings in your style with these beautiful paints. Agree with not liking the Veronese Vert (origin story: earth from Monte Baldo, by the Garda Lake near Verona). Weird that they use Phtalo Green for it. I like their Green Earth (PBr7) better. It granulates and it is a subtle hue and fantastic to mix with blues or yellows. I've only got their 12 tube Essentials starter set but I have to say I've loved using them, so I'm not sure if the formula is different between tube and pan, but I've never struggled with the intensity of the hues. They're definitely a glazing and overlaying brand though rather than a "one and done" instant punch of colour. I also live in the UK so I've never had an issue with them not drying completely in the palette either fortunately! And yes, I always make my own swatch chart, I have a book just for swatches with Bockingford paper, then I usually fill in the one provided by the brand in the tin and do that one too. If there isn't one, I make my own.
Swatching is always the FIRST thing I do when I get new paint. I’m just so excited to play with my new goodies and swatching them out and making swatch/mix charts and color wheels and stuff seems to be my preferred way to get to know my paint.
Omg I’m excited about this video! Mostly because you said you aren’t the biggest fan of this brand in a video a while back. So I’m eager to learn more of why you said that and to know more about the brand. I only own one color by this brand (turquoise green PG50). I like that their version of that color is more blue/cyan and vibrant than most other brands and it is absolutely stunning
I'm so sorry to be late commenting late . Just wanted to say that, the Alizarin Crimson by Senneier is not the real Alizarin Crimson PR83. They should call it Alizarin Crimson hue. One of my oet peeves about Senneier is their misleading paint names. Their so called Alizarin Crimson is ..quote..10 ml - Alizarin Crimson Pigment - PR209, PY83, PR179. To me it looks muddy red, not like real Alizarin at all.

Last year, while hubby and I were in Rome, I bought the Sennelier Travel set of 8 pans, with Primary Yellow, French Vermillion, Cinerous Blue, French Ultramarine, Phthalo Green Light, Sap Green, Burnt Umber, and Payne's Grey. I did a little sampling with them but haven't used them since. Will need to give them more of a try. Thank you for the video.
I had a set of Sennelier pan paints that I just had to buy. They came in a wood box...i think it was a 24 set. Then I tried the tubes that I love because they stay moist and easy to reactivate. Thus, I gave my pan set away to a friend. I kinda wish I would've given them a second chance but oh well. I probably have 20 different brands of paint in tubes and pans. I'm a paint junkie and not a brand loyal person.

After watching you finish this video I thought I might offer an opinion on British Racing Green! This was an identification color for road racing in the early days of motor racing and English or British teams picked a certain color of green for their teams and it stuck! Lovely video and beautiful swatches too! I am not a dedicated user of Sennelier watercolors but they area layering paint and excel in this style of painting. I have become a DaVinci Paints of California zealot! I have just fallen for this watercolor paint! I have even purchased several tubes of their gouache! I simply adore this company and their products!
why do you rub the brush in paint, then the towel, then the paint, then the towel?(like on carmine) did you have a wrong color spot on top? i see people doing this occasionally and i wonder. i am super cheapskatey with every drop of paint so i always notice haha
Ahh! Excellent question! I don’t usually do this when painting an actual painting but when I’m swatching I want to make sure of the purity of color in my swatches. So I pull off whatever is left on the top of each pan, wipe it off on a paper towel and then go back in the pan to get fresh paint that has no mud in it. Hope that makes sense! 😘
I have some tube paints,I’m trying to put them in my covered plastic palette ,I wrote on the tray the names on their content color. But the next time I try to use them the paint has dried and has popped out of their space. What can I do to prevent this
If you have a plastic palette (which sounds like you do), it’s a good idea to prep your palette before applying your paint. I have a video about it, just search my name and “palette hack” and the video will take you through the steps. If the paints still fall out you can use a drop of Gum Arabic under the dried paint to help them stick more.
@Pointebrush your verbal descriptions are excellent!! This looks like a terrific set for travel or a compact home studio, with a generous and well balanced assortment of colors. We're glad you took the time to read the color names carefully and discuss each one thoughtfully. Traditional color names often have an interesting backstory- Gomme Gutte refers to the original Gamboge, or Gummigutt, and "gomme"" refers to the plant gum source for the pigment, which was imported from Sri Lanka and India. (*edit We found English Green referenced as an alternative term for the obsolete and toxic Emerald Green, the poisonous colorant used on William Morris wallpaper and the original end papers for Dickens' "A Christmas Carol".)
Fascinating! Thank you for sharing! I love these color stories and I find that it adds history, romance and inspiration to the painting process to know the backstory of each color. I always thought the word Gamboge was connected to the word “Cambodge” which in French means Cambodia. I have tried multiple brands of paint including Sennelier. I'm not a fan of them but it's because I moved on to other brands that are by far better in my opinion. With that said, I do like their soft pastels better than I like their paint, but even then, there are better brands of soft pastels. The watercolor paint I reach for the most are Qor and Daniel Smith. I also give kudos to M Graham, Schminke, Lukas, and Holbein. If anyone wants to buy the Mission Gold paint by Mijello, don't. It is supposedly professional grade, but I think it paints and looks like student grade. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. lol
Mission Gold were my first paints (besides cheap 48 pan sets), and I don’t think they lasted two weeks. They were not for me either. To my mind they were too artificial. But I’m sure they are perfect for some.
I got a set of 24 Mission Gold single pigments. They worked beautifully on hot press paper for flowers. I haven't used them yet on CP paper. I enjoy them but certainly not my favorite. They were inexpensive so maybe they really aren't professional level....never thought about that!

i swatch all my new paints just like you have...the swatches that come in the palettes etc dont show the true colours like on watercolour paper. really handy when planning a painting. i have a bit of a collection of different brands, oops lol and am interested in trying this brand too
My first proper watercolor palette was a small set of Paul Rubens watercolors and then I branched off to Sennelier and then cough cough many more brands . I’m not a disciplined person and I want to try different brands and pigments. Although it’s not necessary to own many shades of blue, reds, yellows, or convenience mixes etc it sure is fun to try! I think Sennelier isn’t as popular as other brands possibly due to the tube paints staying moist and squishy 😂. Not sure what anyone else thinks.
@@tasticola I also like the firm half pans by Sennelier. So then I purchased some tubes but I wasn’t expecting the texture of the tube paints to be so different from the half pan. They stay moist, but it’s not a problem where I live or when I travel. I have an ancient W&N Cotman set (25 to 30 years old). I don’t have any W&N professional watercolors. That might change in the future. 😊
I have that same palette that is also sitting in one of my watercolor cabinets for about 2 years. I just didn't like the results I got with them. They were just "blah" to me. I guess I'll have to dig out that palette and try them again. Great video.

I think I need to try sennelier’s yellow ochre. I live in Provence and I paint a lot of architectural landscapes and as you probably know, everything is light yellow here 😅 but my Daniel Smith yellow ochre is very punchy and no matter how I water it down, it’s still too bright and it doesn’t represent the specific color of buildings here. The most MISUNDERSTOOD imo is Royal Talens Rembrandt watercolors! They need a paper that doens't allow much spread or too much vibrancy, because they are very vibrant but once you find that paper, they are the best value watercolors out there! I also love their colour sellection, more than most other brands. What they make that works even better, are their Series 100 Kolinsky brushes! They work as good, if not better, than the most famous brush brands out there! PS: Sanders Waterford and Fabriano Artistico Natural white sheets (mould made paper) work good with Rembrandt and Van Gogh.
Yes! It just takes understanding that you can’t use it like other brands. It’s different! Just like trying to use a hammer vs a screwdriver. Both great tools but made to do different things!

I discovered Sennelier watching Tom Lynch videos. He uses these with Fabriano artistico for all his works because he does a lot of lifting. I tried this combination of paint and paper and lifting…it is unbelievable. Even when completely dry the paint can be lifted off almost down to the white. And you can spray off streaks of paint for sun beams. This is now all I use because I love lifting. Try it. You will be amazed! Now what to do with the other 15 brands of paint I have?
Haha! I know it stresses a lot of people out. That's how I roll though. I'm a more impulsive, quick and dirty painter 😉 Believe it or not, I feel like it makes my paintings better!
I love Sennelier tubes, lush and vibrant used fresh from tubes. Never used the pans. I swatch out all colours, have a Winsor and Newton pallet from 1986, did not get a chance to use it as never really practiced art and stopped until 2019, after a few goes at drawing stopped again until November 2023, I did buy same palette in 2018, never used. I do swatches to keep in tins and in my colour book, they are different slightly,the 1984 colours still rewet and are ok to use. I am still learning to draw and paint. So envious of those with natural talent and ability,but starting to enjoy my journey. Rose Opera from the tube is even more stunning, I have Sennelier and Winsor and Newton, Sennelier is lovelier. Ilove it. Just don't use it unless in my sketchbook.

I love how in love with colour you are, love the pronunciation of the French names, the historical notes about colour, love how chatty you are, did I mention this is an absolute DELIGHT of a video? 💖
Interesting to learn, some paints are not as suitable as others for certain watercolour work.... I like putting colour Charts in my tins as it is a great help when working. Thanks for another of your informative videos... They have helped me a lot.❤
I somehow found a sale on this set- $175 American in a post- Christmas sale and with the exception of Cinerous Blue, have really enjoyed them. That blue was just dry and unhappy. Some pigments (and this is across all brands) seem to work better in tubes. I feel like there is a very… French “vibe” to the color palette included. Sennelier shines for naturalists because you can mix such subtle shades, given their transparency. I absolutely agree that if you learn what the paints do best(this is true for any brand) you will have the best success in your art. I use their oil pastels as well for mixed media work…. They are so soft! I’m probably ascribing a luxury to the romance of the brand, but since it seems to inspire art making …. 😉 Edited to add: the virtue of that emerald green, I think, is that it has such a pale hue with No white added. I like it for watery effects. Maybe it does well for impressionistic or more pale/romantic palettes…
I don't know the history but the English green does look a lot like the traditional green paint used on Lower-Saxon farms to paint gates and fences... you can (or could before I moved...) buy that it in bulk at agricultural cooperative society (is this right the way to translate "Landwirtschaftsgenossenschaft"?), I would expect that the Brits used it in a similar way as well and so it being a part of classical landscape painting if you want to paint some rural scenes.
I agree, Sennelier's watercolor is meant for layering as it is quite transparent. You almost got me with your nearly perfect French pronunciation ! We do say the "a" in "cobalt" just as if you were saying the first letter of the alphabet in French, like the word "banane" 😊
My husband gave me the 100 tube box of Sennelier one Christmas. I think they are beautiful. I have a lot of other brands but I really love the Sennelier.

I love Sennelier’s Warm Sepia. The only thing I don’t like about Sennelier is when I try to pry a blob of color out of a palette and move it. Don’t do it!
i have their artist quality paints (what i think you used) i list them top only thing what reduces position to me lack some colours (of course others lack ones as well but to basic hues to me) and how sticky paint can be.(makes harder do details). caput mortum is one what likely stays in colours what i use even my main brands are others. i dont understand how can be under rated of course all not work all.
I agree with your observation of Sennelier paints ^^ I have a couple of tubes of them, and I adore them for the softness and clarity. I think that's why many botanical artists love them, especially for glazing to create that glowing flowers 😆
I love my Sennelier half pans, use them for most of my motorsport art a lot of people can not believe the intensity of colour I am achieving with watercolours since switching to them.
I typically swatch on a big piece of paper so I can view the colors more easily. I have the stack of swatches on hand and clip the one I’m using to the blinds in front of my desk. I just love swatching too.
I so loved the comparison between a cat watercolour and a dog watercolour LOL. "You have to get to know it and speak its language and then it will start liking you."

The color that is labled as Caput Mortuum is Raw Siennna and they put the color in the wrong pan when it got packaged. But Caput Mortuum is a violet earth red that is also a lovely mixing color. I like to mix it with Cinereous Blue or Cerulean Blue for greys.
I absolutely ADORE Sennelier! They make two of my favorite colors of ALL TIME: Chinese Orange and Greenish Umber. Maybe your pans were old when you bought them? Maybe that's why they didn't seem to come out so punchy? I have only used the tubes so I have not had to experience the way the formula is when it's in the factory made pans. I have made my own pans and they are still just as amazing as out of the tube. And yes, I swatch my palettes and keep the sheet inside my palettes, you are not alone!
I had the exact opposite. Mine were TOO vivid
I love my pan set of Sennelier and use it for portraits and I can layer and layer and they just look better and better with each pass rather than looking overdone. So when I started to run low on the pans I bought tubes to refill them and got a few more colors and the difference between tubes and pans is WOW. I usually use Holbein for when I need more thickly applied and opaque work, and now with the tubes I can take Sennelier from glazing and layering with pans and use straight from the tubes for gorgeous color in one pass. The best way to use Sennelier is tubes; pour some into a pan and let cure so it can be used sheer and translucent but keep the tubes near for when you need a punchier version of that color. Incredible quality with the honey- they’re sooooo smooth.
Yes to what you talk about at around 33 mins in. These are for layering and glazing. They are not for the one layer swooshy loose florals. But man, they layer so beautifully. Almost impossible to overwork. And on hot press paper they are even better. Their olive green and Forest green are fabulous for landscapes.
I agree with everything you said. Hot press paper is absolutely the best place to watch them shine (literally). I think a lot of people expect to do loose, punchy florals on cold press paper and when these don’t deliver like a Daniel Smith or Winsor & Newton in that environment, it’s taken as a weakness of the paint when that isn’t the case.
I agree fully. These are spectacular on hot press and layered …. When I did my swatches of them, I did larger squares and three layers. The layers are laid out so i can see each paint in 1, 2, or 3 layers on the swatch card. This style of swatching really showed me so much. These are by far my favorite brand and i love the subtlety, luminosity, and character of these paints. Using them has made me a better painter. Thank you for this wonderful video.

@@Pointebrush Please do use it for a video demo! It’s so informative to see the way the layering works, not just in single layer swatches but also using two different colors in two or more layers. So many possibilities here! Just make sure to let each layer dry fully before glazing again.
These paints do require patience to really reveal their magic. And it is a very special magic, indeed.

I love Sennelier watercolour paints. The misunderstanding about these paints is that they are for glazing. I am a floral artist and my type of art uses glazing primarily Sennelier paints are made for subtle colors that you build on to for that realistic look. These paints are not for the WOW factor but with a few layers, they get more intense. They rewet beautifully as they are made with honey but aren't sticky as M. Graham watercolour paints that do not dry completely if put in pans. I hope you will come to appreciate your set of Sennelier watercolour paint set. Take another look at what they are best at glazing. All the best !!!

Yep, that’s what I use them for. With the exception of a couple of colours (sennelier yellow deep sucks) I like them very much. On the other hand, I dislike most of Daniel Smith….with the exception of a few that are useful……it’s so dependent on what we use them for. Thank goodness there are so many brands available so we can pick and chose as needed. It’s a problem if you are somewhere where you can only get one brand though. It’s always a shock to me how much the same pigment can vary across brands though. Not interchangeable although logically it seems like they should be.
I love my Senneleir paints comined with a fine tip black ir brown ink pen for travel watercolors. They give a wonderful sense of immediency to my watercolor sketches.
I love swatching because it's a time of discovery. I love playing and not feeling any pressure to get things just right. 😊

I also love Sennelier and i suggest you try tube paints. Totally different class I think. The only thing I don't like about them is the fact that some colours never dry when put in pans. Which leads me to conclusion that formulation of their pans and tubes are different. I also just adore their Caput Mortum colour.
I was going to say, I have only ever used them in tube form--I'm one of those weirdos that likes painting fresh from the tube. I have NEVER had an issue with Sennelier letting me down or being anything other than a sheer delight.
They aren't an M.Graham level pigment bomb, but they are a similar consistency being as both brands are so heavily honey-based. That high honey concentration is likely why Sennelier isnt drying down in a palette for you. Honey draws moisture to it out of the air, right? I have to imagine that if there is enough honey in the binder it would have the same effect in paint--and with the anti-pathogenic properties it won't be consumed by little bitty buggers. 🦠
Sennelier is my go-to brand. It is my understanding that the tubes are better than the pans. Since I don't care for panned paint, I have many Sennelier tubes. There is no way for me to pick favorites. 😅
Sennelier was my first watercolor love when I started painting in 2016. I started with the Aqua Mini and went from there. I own almost the entire line at this point. I even bought the 48-pan set because I found it on sale at Jackson's. So I have it all and still love it. My top 10 (11): Yellow Sophie, Yellow Lake, Senn. Yellow Deep, Red Orange, French Vermillion, Scarlet Laquer, Senn. Red, Cinerous Blue, Rose Dore Madder Lake, Opera Rose, and Helios Purple.

@@Niigishi_ Look for the Aqua Mini on sale. It's a fine little set to start with, although the Burnt Sienna is a bit disappointing. The rest are marvelous. I took the Aqua Mini and removed the half pans. If you remove the thing the pans sit in, you can get many more half pans in there. I spray painted the inside of the small container with white enamel to create mixing space, and it was perfect, compact and all one needs. I have nearly all of the line of Sennelier colors now and can use any combination of colors a project requires. I'm not as big a fan of Holbein, though I have a few tubes. I love Sennelier. I also love Daniel Smith, M. Graham, and others, but Sennelier was my first love. You'll find your own preferences.

I used to be extra careful to keep the paint within the boundary of the pan, but then I suddenly rebelled and now I don't care!😂
I have that set as well and love it but I also found making my own swatch sheet was valuable. I added four more colours to my set which were: Sennelier Grey, Greenish Umber, Blue Violet and Olive Green. I put the watch sheet through my Xyron double laminated machine to protect it.

Hi Nell! Yes! Each of them have their place and purpose. It’s like saying salt is better than pepper. Both are useful but you can’t expect salt to do pepper’s job and vice versa. Each brand has intrinsic properties that are specific and yield individual results 👍

I put these cards in my palettes as well. I hold them to the same side you did, but i use thin round magnets (just two). That makes it easy to take the card out to stand it up somewhere other than the palette top or to look at a swatch closer to an existing color if i want to.
I only have one Sennelier paint, which is 'Sennelier Red'. It's a pyrrohl (sp?) red and I still remember the thrill I got when I first swatched it - so intense, so glide-y! Gorgeous! It's still the mid-red I use on my palette.
Sennelier is a brand of beautiful watercolors that give great rewards to both advanced and beginner watercolorists, IMO. Beginners can do worse than start right out of the gate with Sennelier Aquamini, which presents 8 great colors at a very reasonable price for those who want to paint things like botanical subjects. For the more experienced, committed, and patient artist, the Sennelier wooden case of ~100 tubes is a revelation. The consistency of the wet paint does require more patience and work, imo. That is because of the binder and honey. You can glaze forever with these paints, and if you aren’t into glazing, the colors appear more subtle, more muted than say, Qor, DS, or Rosa Gallery. I find when I switch up from my Sennelier paints to my Schmincke paint, the latter just seems so much easier to work with quickly somehow. But, patience is a virtue, they say, and I do love my Sennelier paints with all their subtleties. I think they are great paints for people who tend to overwork things.

Your raw sienna is caput mortem! Somehow they became mixed up.
I have the Caput mortuum (PR 101) and the Terre de Sienne Brulée (PBr 7) from Sennelier and they are the correct colour, not like what you have swatched. They look like they've been interchanged. I really like the Sennelier ones, they are soft (not grainy) and bright at the same time a bit like the Rembrandts, a European characteristic. The only colour I don't like is Sap Green, which is opaque and dull.
i adore my sennelier paints! i live in the desert so they actually dry just as good as my other brands! the half pans for sure and even the tubes i have added dry good too. i have their phlao and cobalt turquoise in tubes and there was a little seperation in the cobalt turquoise but they are just so gorgeous. my favorite turquoises for mixing leaf colors : )

My first experience with watercolor was with Windsor and Newton……rarely use them now…..but because I was interested and took classes in botanical illustration…..I came across Sennelier. they are beautiful watercolors! Clean colors with a pure feel to them….they layer very well. Ultimately Schmincke became my favorite overall……with Daniel Smith blues and greens and Holbein as well. Thank you for doing this…..will get my set out and replay this a few times and swatch with you!
Congrats 🎉 on giving these another chance @pointebrush. Indeed, these colours are super transparent and they layer so well. You do need to get to know these colours to appreciate what they do. I often get frustrated when colours become dull after glazing, but @sennelier is an exception. I enjoyed your commentary of each colour so much -esoecially how you find things that are occur in nature with that colour (like your abundant pinecones). I look forward to seeing more paintings in your style with these beautiful paints. Agree with not liking the Veronese Vert (origin story: earth from Monte Baldo, by the Garda Lake near Verona). Weird that they use Phtalo Green for it. I like their Green Earth (PBr7) better. It granulates and it is a subtle hue and fantastic to mix with blues or yellows. Even to dull reds or add granulation to other colours without changing the tone too much. Sorry that turned into another Ted Talk 😂 here. Thanks, Margot!
I've only got their 12 tube Essentials starter set but I have to say I've loved using them, so I'm not sure if the formula is different between tube and pan, but I've never struggled with the intensity of the hues. They're definitely a glazing and overlaying brand though rather than a "one and done" instant punch of colour.
I also live in the UK so I've never had an issue with them not drying completely in the palette either fortunately! And yes, I always make my own swatch chart, I have a book just for swatches with Bockingford paper, then I usually fill in the one provided by the brand in the tin and do that one too. If there isn't one, I make my own.
Swatching is always the FIRST thing I do when I get new paint. I’m just so excited to play with my new goodies and swatching them out and making swatch/mix charts and color wheels and stuff seems to be my preferred way to get to know my paint.
I’d love to try their Jaune Sophie. Even the name sounds fancy 😂.

So I’m eager to learn more of why you said that and to know more about the brand. I only own one color by this brand (turquoise green PG50). I like that their version of that color is more blue/cyan and vibrant than most other brands and it is absolutely stunning

I'm so sorry to be late commenting late . Just wanted to say that, the Alizarin Crimson by Senneier is not the real Alizarin Crimson PR83. They should call it Alizarin Crimson hue. One of my oet peeves about Senneier is their misleading paint names. Their so called Alizarin Crimson is ..quote..10 ml - Alizarin Crimson
Pigment - PR209, PY83, PR179. To me it looks muddy red, not like real Alizarin at all.

Last year, while hubby and I were in Rome, I bought the Sennelier Travel set of 8 pans, with Primary Yellow, French Vermillion, Cinerous Blue, French Ultramarine, Phthalo Green Light, Sap Green, Burnt Umber, and Payne's Grey. I did a little sampling with them but haven't used them since. Will need to give them more of a try. Thank you for the video.

I had a set of Sennelier pan paints that I just had to buy. They came in a wood box...i think it was a 24 set. Then I tried the tubes that I love because they stay moist and easy to reactivate. Thus, I gave my pan set away to a friend. I kinda wish I would've given them a second chance but oh well. I probably have 20 different brands of paint in tubes and pans. I'm a paint junkie and not a brand loyal person.

After watching you finish this video I thought I might offer an opinion on British Racing Green! This was an identification color for road racing in the early days of motor racing and English or British teams picked a certain color of green for their teams and it stuck! Lovely video and beautiful swatches too! I am not a dedicated user of Sennelier watercolors but they area layering paint and excel in this style of painting. I have become a DaVinci Paints of California zealot! I have just fallen for this watercolor paint! I have even purchased several tubes of their gouache! I simply adore this company and their products!

why do you rub the brush in paint, then the towel, then the paint, then the towel?(like on carmine) did you have a wrong color spot on top? i see people doing this occasionally and i wonder. i am super cheapskatey with every drop of paint so i always notice haha
Ahh! Excellent question! I don’t usually do this when painting an actual painting but when I’m swatching I want to make sure of the purity of color in my swatches. So I pull off whatever is left on the top of each pan, wipe it off on a paper towel and then go back in the pan to get fresh paint that has no mud in it. Hope that makes sense! 😘

My caput mortem, from Sennelier is burgundy color. It looks like dried blood.
I have some tube paints,I’m trying to put them in my covered plastic palette ,I wrote on the tray the names on their content color. But the next time I try to use them the paint has dried and has popped out of their space. What can I do to prevent this
If you have a plastic palette (which sounds like you do), it’s a good idea to prep your palette before applying your paint. I have a video about it, just search my name and “palette hack” and the video will take you through the steps. If the paints still fall out you can use a drop of Gum Arabic under the dried paint to help them stick more.

@Pointebrush your verbal descriptions are excellent!! This looks like a terrific set for travel or a compact home studio, with a generous and well balanced assortment of colors. We're glad you took the time to read the color names carefully and discuss each one thoughtfully. Traditional color names often have an interesting backstory- Gomme Gutte refers to the original Gamboge, or Gummigutt, and "gomme"" refers to the plant gum source for the pigment, which was imported from Sri Lanka and India. (*edit We found English Green referenced as an alternative term for the obsolete and toxic Emerald Green, the poisonous colorant used on William Morris wallpaper and the original end papers for Dickens' "A Christmas Carol".)
Fascinating! Thank you for sharing! I love these color stories and I find that it adds history, romance and inspiration to the painting process to know the backstory of each color. I always thought the word Gamboge was connected to the word “Cambodge” which in French means Cambodia. I have tried multiple brands of paint including Sennelier. I'm not a fan of them but it's because I moved on to other brands that are by far better in my opinion. With that said, I do like their soft pastels better than I like their paint, but even then, there are better brands of soft pastels. The watercolor paint I reach for the most are Qor and Daniel Smith. I also give kudos to M Graham, Schminke, Lukas, and Holbein. If anyone wants to buy the Mission Gold paint by Mijello, don't. It is supposedly professional grade, but I think it paints and looks like student grade. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. lol

Mission Gold were my first paints (besides cheap 48 pan sets), and I don’t think they lasted two weeks. They were not for me either. To my mind they were too artificial. But I’m sure they are perfect for some.

I got a set of 24 Mission Gold single pigments. They worked beautifully on hot press paper for flowers. I haven't used them yet on CP paper. I enjoy them but certainly not my favorite. They were inexpensive so maybe they really aren't professional level....never thought about that!

i swatch all my new paints just like you have...the swatches that come in the palettes etc dont show the true colours like on watercolour paper. really handy when planning a painting. i have a bit of a collection of different brands, oops lol and am interested in trying this brand too
My first proper watercolor palette was a small set of Paul Rubens watercolors and then I branched off to Sennelier and then cough cough many more brands . I’m not a disciplined person and I want to try different brands and pigments. Although it’s not necessary to own many shades of blue, reds, yellows, or convenience mixes etc it sure is fun to try! I think Sennelier isn’t as popular as other brands possibly due to the tube paints staying moist and squishy 😂. Not sure what anyone else thinks.

@@tasticola I also like the firm half pans by Sennelier. So then I purchased some tubes but I wasn’t expecting the texture of the tube paints to be so different from the half pan. They stay moist, but it’s not a problem where I live or when I travel. I have an ancient W&N Cotman set (25 to 30 years old). I don’t have any W&N professional watercolors. That might change in the future. 😊
Even their Cotman have pretty good ratings... but yes, I see some Winsor and Newton pro in your future! x Nell

I have that same palette that is also sitting in one of my watercolor cabinets for about 2 years. I just didn't like the results I got with them. They were just "blah" to me. I guess I'll have to dig out that palette and try them again. Great video.
Give them another go! This time try glazing with with them and creating several layers and see what you think!

I think I need to try sennelier’s yellow ochre. I live in Provence and I paint a lot of architectural landscapes and as you probably know, everything is light yellow here 😅 but my Daniel Smith yellow ochre is very punchy and no matter how I water it down, it’s still too bright and it doesn’t represent the specific color of buildings here. Thanks for these kinds of videos. It’s easy to compare brands without committing to buying ❤

The most MISUNDERSTOOD imo is Royal Talens Rembrandt watercolors! They need a paper that doens't allow much spread or too much vibrancy, because they are very vibrant but once you find that paper, they are the best value watercolors out there! I also love their colour sellection, more than most other brands. What they make that works even better, are their Series 100 Kolinsky brushes! They work as good, if not better, than the most famous brush brands out there!
PS: Sanders Waterford and Fabriano Artistico Natural white sheets (mould made paper) work good with Rembrandt and Van Gogh.

I discovered Sennelier watching Tom Lynch videos. He uses these with Fabriano artistico for all his works because he does a lot of lifting. I tried this combination of paint and paper and lifting…it is unbelievable. Even when completely dry the paint can be lifted off almost down to the white. And you can spray off streaks of paint for sun beams. This is now all I use because I love lifting. Try it. You will be amazed! Now what to do with the other 15 brands of paint I have?

Haha! I know it stresses a lot of people out. That's how I roll though. I'm a more impulsive, quick and dirty painter 😉 Believe it or not, I feel like it makes my paintings better!

I love Sennelier tubes, lush and vibrant used fresh from tubes. Never used the pans. I swatch out all colours, have a Winsor and Newton pallet from 1986, did not get a chance to use it as never really practiced art and stopped until 2019, after a few goes at drawing stopped again until November 2023, I did buy same palette in 2018, never used. I do swatches to keep in tins and in my colour book, they are different slightly,the 1984 colours still rewet and are ok to use. I am still learning to draw and paint. So envious of those with natural talent and ability,but starting to enjoy my journey.
Rose Opera from the tube is even more stunning, I have Sennelier and Winsor and Newton, Sennelier is lovelier. Ilove it. Just don't use it unless in my sketchbook.
I really like that palette I have it and I need to use it again!
What an absolute delight of a video to watch with my morning cuppa after seeing that my local art store has Sennelier on sale. I love how in love with colour you are, love the pronunciation of the French names, the historical notes about colour, love how chatty you are, did I mention this is an absolute DELIGHT of a video? 💖
Interesting to learn, some paints are not as suitable as others for certain watercolour work....
I like putting colour Charts in my tins as it is a great help when working.

I somehow found a sale on this set- $175 American in a post- Christmas sale and with the exception of Cinerous Blue, have really enjoyed them. That blue was just dry and unhappy. Some pigments (and this is across all brands) seem to work better in tubes. I feel like there is a very… French “vibe” to the color palette included. Sennelier shines for naturalists because you can mix such subtle shades, given their transparency.
I absolutely agree that if you learn what the paints do best(this is true for any brand) you will have the best success in your art.
I use their oil pastels as well for mixed media work…. They are so soft! I’m probably ascribing a luxury to the romance of the brand, but since it seems to inspire art making …. 😉
Edited to add: the virtue of that emerald green, I think, is that it has such a pale hue with No white added. I like it for watery effects. Maybe it does well for impressionistic or more pale/romantic palettes…
I don't know the history but the English green does look a lot like the traditional green paint used on Lower-Saxon farms to paint gates and fences... you can (or could before I moved...) buy that it in bulk at agricultural cooperative society (is this right the way to translate "Landwirtschaftsgenossenschaft"?), I would expect that the Brits used it in a similar way as well and so it being a part of classical landscape painting if you want to paint some rural scenes.
I agree, Sennelier's watercolor is meant for layering as it is quite transparent. You almost got me with your nearly perfect French pronunciation ! We do say the "a" in "cobalt" just as if you were saying the first letter of the alphabet in French, like the word "banane" 😊
My husband gave me the 100 tube box of Sennelier one Christmas. I think they are beautiful. I have a lot of other brands but I really love the Sennelier.

I have multiple 12(actually 20)pan palettes. I make a swatch card for every one .
I love Sennelier’s Warm Sepia. The only thing I don’t like about Sennelier is when I try to pry a blob of color out of a palette and move it. Don’t do it!
i have their artist quality paints (what i think you used) i list them top only thing what reduces position to me lack some colours (of course others lack ones as well but to basic hues to me) and how sticky paint can be.(makes harder do details). caput mortum is one what likely stays in colours what i use even my main brands are others. i dont understand how can be under rated of course all not work all.
You would probably live these more if you listed them first. I think this is too many in a box. I use the small white mini tin for travel sketching.
I agree with your observation of Sennelier paints ^^ I have a couple of tubes of them, and I adore them for the softness and clarity.
I think that's why many botanical artists love them, especially for glazing to create that glowing flowers 😆
I love my Sennelier half pans, use them for most of my motorsport art a lot of people can not believe the intensity of colour I am achieving with watercolours since switching to them.

I'm not a huge fan of Sennelier, but indanthrene blue is the most recent addition to my palette and I LOVE IT SO MUCH. Beautiful blue.
French watercolors are just like French wines, they need to age a bit.
I always do this kind of swatches!
I make swatch grid cards for my pan palettes, and then I have a laminating tool that I use so that it doesn’t get ruined.

I typically swatch on a big piece of paper so I can view the colors more easily. I have the stack of swatches on hand and clip the one I’m using to the blinds in front of my desk. I just love swatching too.
I so loved the comparison between a cat watercolour and a dog watercolour LOL. "You have to get to know it and speak its language and then it will start liking you."
