Garbage it is not. Yngwie specified it should be an accurate recreation of his beloved DOD 250 Preamp Overdrive including the noise floor One thing about the DOD YJM308/DOD250 Preamp Overdrive: It´s a full-frequency signal input gain / signal output volume pedal,- NOT an upper-mid/treble booster like the Ibanez 808/ TS9 Tube Screamer so it will boost the entire frequency range of your guitar signal going to the preamp of your amp,- not just the upper mids! The key to Yngwie tone is simple: Strat with slightly overwound pickups ( Seymour Duncan YJM Fury Set - all positions or DiMarzio HS3-bridge/ DiMarzio YJM-mid,neck) into wah, DOD 250/308 Preamp Overdrive into Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor going into single channel compressed ( crancked ) Marshall with G12T-75 speakers. Live-FX: Octaver and Fuzz Face( for tonal effects ) after wah - before DOD308. After NS-2 ,-single line input into Boss DD-3 Delay unit split into dry/wet going in stereo into Roland Space Echo 201 Delay unit pedal going to amps 1 and 2. The rest is learning to play like Yngwie,- that may be the hard part.........:)
The YJM has a small input capacitor than the original units so it cuts more low end out. It makes it sound thin and tinny at times as you can hear in the demo.easy enough to mod it to original spec.
I have one of these and think it is glorious for a very specific purpose, namely boosting a strat into a crunchy plexi style amp. For other applications, I tend to prefer other overdrives. But for the yngwie thing, nothing else will do. Great playing by the way!
When those had been out for a while and came down in price to around $25-20 USD, they made an *amazing* platform for mods to get them closer to the grey and yellow DOD preamp pedals. Even on their own, they sound much better than the Fender Yngwie pedal and will get you that Alcatrazz live/Rising Force/Marching Out/Trilogy tone with a loud 50/100-watt Plexi.
man I had one of these like a decade ago but I think I sold it after not really using it for anything. I think I was too much of a noob and just turned the gain up all the way and thought the splatty fuzz didn't sound good, and never tried it at more moderate settings. It takes maturity to not just dial it all to 10!
Wow, Leon! These are some sweet tones - like the vibe you get from it and how it supports your play on the Strat, even on low gain settings👍🏻 Cheers from Germany, Harry
This pedal is great when modded into true 1979 grey spec with just a couple part changes. One of the easiest mod’s I’ve done for myself. I added a LED and modern power jack too. Lately I’ve been using it on my tube amp clean edge of breakup with gain around 2:00-4:00 and level at noonish unity and there I don’t need a noise pedal. It also sounds thicker with a DOD 410 Clean Boost into it just a nudge past unity to thicken it up slightly still with the noise floor low. My guitars have YJM Fury and HS-3 respectively.
I think the "great vs garbage" depends on the other components in your rig. I bought one of these several years ago and think at the time was using it with an Engl amp and HB equipped guitars. It didn't really do it for me then. However I now have a YJM strat and into a crunchy JCM800, it's beautiful. It's the missing piece to the Yngwie sound. Now I just need leather pants and his fingers. I really wish they had this pedal (or even just the DOD250) in the Axe FX III, although the +distortion is a similar circuit.
Top video and great playing, really great standard of review and styles played, I mean you showed it go from SRV to near Fuzz on one part alone. Sick technique.
I don’t think it’s garbage, but it doesn’t seem particularly special either. For me it just falls into that category (which many signature items do) of here’s something artist “A” has been using for years, so we’re going to slap their name on it and generate some revenue for an otherwise established product. A common practice no doubt, and I’m sure it’s achieving just that. But I wouldn’t feel inclined to purchase it myself. Since entering into the fractal universe, I’m more of the opinion that while lots of cool gear continues to surface, I feel like I can achieve most tones/sounds that pop up with some careful tweaking and sound close enough to it if not spot on. And if it’s not already waiting for me in the box, chances are some new FW will drop that brings it aboard. Great video Leon. In the mood for some Viking music now.
The YJM model has an input impedance of 4 million ohms, which is higher than the other models.I have an original DOD 250 I bought new in 1980.These days I use it stacked with a few other pedals with distortion all the way down just slightly above unity gain.I run it into a Naga Viper and the Naga into a Maxon OD808 into a modded Boss GE-7 MIJ with all the EQs set flat and the master gain just barely engaged above the detent. That combo into a recto,5150,or other high gain amp is perfect.
Thank you for the video on this pedal. I was never much for overdrive pedals as I like my amps/modelers to run mega-gain/crunch, especially when playing an American Standard and not my HM. This pedal seems like a cool addition if one is chasing the YJM tone, which would also mean getting a YJM Strat, using a Marshall (or modeler), using .48/.08 E strings. Great playing as well. All the best from the Bay Area! MK
Picked one up back when they dropped the prices to like $30 and sent mine to Analog Man for the original Yngwie DOD mod. Really a nice smooth OD / lead boost for my gainy tones.
Was that support to be " ill see the light tonight " ftom marching out? Sorry I am an ex yngwie fanatic and had several project bands doing his stuff . I've had all his gear . that pedal was specifically designed for his single coils which were dmarzzio , so glad to see you used his strat to show it on . mamy people think it's a distortion pedal or gain monster amd are disappointed with it . I've had that pedal and his strat going on 16 years . I wanted his exact sound so ...... Now I believe he is using emg"s in his strata . but yes if your just looking for a distortion/ gain pedal your best to go with something else . this is strictly for his single coils in his strata which were low mgz.
I had one of these back in the late 90s or early 2k's I believe, and I used it on a 40 watt DSL Marshall 1 x 12. I would dial up a crunchy tone that I could clean up with my volume knob, then click on this for a lead. I was thinking I just turned the volume all the way up on it and gain most of the way dowm though, but don't remember. I did seem to like it, but I got rid of because later I didn't need it.
Not garbage man. They’re great! I modified mine to use a different chip, the double opal- of the original od250, and it kicks arse. Tweaked input and output cap too. Can’t fault it, and it cost me £35!
Hey.. I think I knew that solo in the Mix... I think the tittle is, "I don't remember (the notes, but), I'll never forget" lol.... I knew that you play your own lick here in the matters of copyright sake.. cheers... Good tone...
I have one...modded...and return to standard...it's sound the best...it's an amazing pedal as it is...you have to turn the volume full...and increase the gain from 0 to your choice
Leon, you didn't choose to buy one of his used broken ones at double the price? The man can certainly play guitar, not too sure about his marketing strategies! I must admit out of all the distortion pedals that are available, I still like the DOD 250.
Mine was given to me and I have it left packed away for about 3 years just rooted it out today and plugged it into my slash 2555 jubilee head and its fukin great! Like a tube screamer basically there excellent for the money
@@LeonTodd its animal leon basically a silver jubilee with a little more gain.. as I'm sure u know Does the use you're illusion tone like ya wouldnt believe.

"I still can't play like Yngwie...." erm, yes...you can! BTW, does it require a tube amp to work, or could it be used on a solid state amp? New subscriber here!
I think it's a good pedal for blues to classic rock... Other than that I wouldn't touch it for metal... Just me... Ok so I listened to the video again.... It's not bad for metal but I'm hearing overtone that I don't like... Definitely if you use it for metal you have to have a noise surpressor
Btw yngwie needs to just play . He's no Jeff Scott Soto and parabellum will fail miserably . loved. Rising force / marching out/ trilogy after thar im all set .
You don't remeeeeember, I'll never forgeeet

The bluesy tones are real nice
Nice YJM tone!!!! I'm also a Yngwie fan, and it's super nice to see you playing through this pedal. Awesome playing and video man!!
Yngwie always had great tone IMO
@@LeonTodd sure he did! Definitely not the mid rich modern metal tones, but his tone was always good and instantly recognizable!

I use this box turned up full on both with a noise gate and my 2008 yjm strat that has dimarzio HS3s and it sounds freeking amazing
Similar for me with a 90's Japanese YJM with the HS3's and NS2 - utterly epic. Mediocre with any other guitar I have though lol
It sounded great in the mix. It clearly gets you into the YJM territory for tone.
Love your tone and playing Man
thanks my man!
Top video and great playing, really great standard of review and styles played, I mean you showed it go from SRV to near Fuzz on one part alone. Sick technique.
Thanks for the kind words mate :)
The DOD 250 Preamp is one of my favorite overdrives, it’s can take amp distortion to a whole other level. I always recommend it for people to try.
Underrated circuit

One question. I want used this pedal over distortion pedal.

Thanks modest mike for the mod on my 308 even the led is cool
Speaking of pedals, H&K just released the new Black Spirit 200 Floor. Would you be interested in demoing one?
Great pedal, wonderfully beautiful playing and very enjoyable clip. What amp was it going through.? Another job well done, Cheers

this is a great pedal but it needs a noise gate to tame the noise
Yeah there's crazy amounts of hissy noise

It's like buying protein powder and hoping to look like Arnie
Yeah, can't really sound like him without a loud Marshall plexi, or a plexi esque amp as the foundation.

Firmly garbage. Bought one new in 07 for $50bux, they are not worth that. I didn't use it Yngwie style, works for him though
Expensive paperweight?
I had this pedal. TOTAL GARBAGE! Worst overdrive ever. The 2013 250 reissue was actually good.
