There's a factor of nostalgia with old formats which gets confused with it sounding better, but also there's the factor that due to how hard it was to get a really good sound people often make more efforts in their setups and this is why.
They compare it then to a cheap CD portable HiFi to their big room setup from before.
One thing I do feel is something that people like and it's what I like is the organic factor of the play back.
With digital you hear exactly what the artist ended up with but tape and vinyl etc added slight nuances to the play back.
For me also, I now mainly only like it for sampling... the law of quality and the oddness in the play back makes it great for sampling and adding a organic factor and another thing is the sound does often find it's own space with the more cleaner sounds you will add to it.
Of course... very high quality reel to reel tape is something still good enough to use these days in production and mix and mastering.
You of course could not have a reel to reel setup without spending massive amounts back in the day and still now, that is the case... unless you are luck and find a good reel to reel for £300 odd from someone selling one that doesn't know too much about the market.

So happy that more and more knowledgeable actors of the industry are debunking all the stupid myths that were passed on from one audio snob to another for too long. Thanks a lot for this video. It’s priceless and well informed and documented. Awesome work! 👌

There are plenty of other wonders to marvel at, but it would certainly jot be as joyous and fun! It is one the magical things in the universe for sure. And having it as a backdrop makes everything else that little bit more special.

Really great take on the subject. I am actually even older than you, but you really said this all very well, and in a ways I hadn't quite thought of. Thank you for this.

I've been through records, 8 tracks, cassettes, etc. We didnt much care what we had, we just wanted to hear the music. We didnt start caring about quality till much later.

Perfect video about consumer media! I'm an audiophile and I still listen to music on vinyl records (with a good turntable and a good cartridge), although I listen more to CDs, FLAC files and Hi-Fi music streaming nowadays. To me, it makes no sense at all for anyone to say that cassette tapes and 8-track tapes are better than any other current format.
The disadvantages of vinyl are exactly those described in the video, and I'll add one more to the list: some vinyl records may have worse audio quality than others. There are more modern techniques for pressing vinyl records that are better than the traditional "lacquer-cut", for example DMM (Direct-Metal-Mastering). And there are some pressing plants that have better quality control in their production than others (for example, Pallas GmbH, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, MPO France, Record Industry / Music on Vinyl, etc).

Great video. Everything you said is true. Funny how it is. I feel old too in my mid to late 50's coming from the days of no cells phones or personal computers. We have come very far from those days. I wish I had all these and UA-cam as I was growing up. Things would have been different but then again we had more people interaction in those days. I feel in todays world we are way too much involved in social media that many forget to go and see people and experience life as we did in the old days. Thank you for the memories!

Besides vinyl, I listened incessantly to AM radio for new music (no decent FM stations in range). The highest frequency is only 5 kHz and it’s mono.

I come from a family of music lovers and I have listened to many formats through the last 35 years. Have you ever listened to the “SACD”format? I didn’t know it and my father had a few at home. The difference between a CD and an SACD version of the same album is crazy. I don’t know why they dropped the format, it’s crazy good 😮

I had an SACD player in the 2000s. The problem with this medium is the impractical DSD digital audio format. This format is proprietary to Sony, and it was inspired by the electronics of class D amplifiers. Most people (including audiophiles) are satisfied with the PCM audio format. Even in music studios, PCM is the most widely used format. Nowadays, there are DACs and amplifiers that support the DSD format originally used in SACDs, but they are niche and expensive.

@@GustavoM.D. but man they sound good 😳. All the reverbs, spatial details and high frequency precision are impressive. It’s like DVD vs 4K for your ears! I’m not kidding, it’s that different!

@@dyonissiszoes3747 I know! SACD and its DSD audio format are the pinnacle of digital audio! I still listen to ripped SACDs in lossless files, and on Hi-Fi streaming services that offer streaming in DSD format (e.g. QoBus). But these days I rely more on better mixed and mastered music than on better audio format. 🤝

Great video. Would love to see more about the history of recording media (reel-to-reel, DA88, ADAT, digital) and history of recording consoles (how did we go from mono recording to large format console to hybrid) and maybe history of home recording technology. Also, whatever happened to minidisc? I never got a chance to hear one.
